8=Qlaims.
This invention relates to .an improved check strap for looms which has overlapped ends at one or both ends thereof so as to give double wearing qualities and at the same time permits the :use of shortpieces-of leather, whereas heretoiore check straps have been composed of one long piece of leather which is very expensive because only asmall portion of'a cowhide has leather of suiiicient thickness and length to .pro-
-vide the "elongated strips which have heretofore been in conventional use. By "the use of short pieces of leather and overlapping the same at one or both ends, a check strap can he provided which will "havemuch longer wear than the conventional check strap made of one long piece of leather but will be much less expensive on account of being able to use a large portionof the cowhide which .hereto'fore has been unsuitable for use as check straps.
'It is an object of this invention to provide a check strap for looms made of a piece .of leather overlapped at one orboth ends toprovideadouble thickness .of wearing surface at the point wlhere the pickerstick .engagesthe check strap.
It is another object of this invention to. provide a check strap .made vof two pieces of leather and overlapping at :one of the ends and an eccentric wearing plug, preferably made of leather, vdisposed between the other ends so that the eccentric wearing plug can be adjusted as to position to regulate overall length of the interior portion of the check strap from one end to the other.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of one end of the lay of a loom showing my invention applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view, partly in section, looking upward from below Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, but showing the check strap of double thickness;
Figure 4 is 'a view similar to Figure 1, but showing another" form of check strap;
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view looking upward from the lower edge in Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a view similar to the structure of the check strap shown in Figure 5, but showing it of double thickness.
Referring more specifically to the drawings the numeral l0 indicates one end of the lay of a loom having a race plate H and box front l2, there being a binder also on the top of the plate ll,
straps 3.0 and 3|.
but this binder is behind the box front and isnot shown, and between thebinder and "box'iront I2 a shuttle I3 is adapted to be received to cause its :nose "to strikeraupicker I' l disposed on an oscillating picker stick iii, which has back and forth movement in a slot H in the rate plate ll. J Secured to the lower and side surfaces of the lay i0 and on each side of the slot I! are the brackets 20 having a pair of downwardly projecting spaced fingers 2! and -22 and this bracket has outtunned lips :23 having a slot '24 therein penetrated by a bolt 25to which is adjustably secured a horizontal portion .26 of a downwardly depending finger 21, the'fingers 2| and .22 and 21 having in'turnedlips at their lower ends for holding the check strap in its elevated position and the off set relation of fingers 2|, 2], and "22 imparts the proper amount .of friction to the longitudinal .movement of the check strap when stopping the picker stick as it oscillates or swings in both directions. The above described mechanism is conventional in a loom and it is with such a mechanism that my improved check strap is adapted to operate.
My improved check strap comprises -a pair of .short pieces of leather 0 and 3 which are overlapped at one end as at 32 and '33 and secured together by anysuitahle meanssuch as rivets 3B.
gives a double wearing portion to the overlapped ends of the check strap. Between. the other ends of the straps 3B and 3! there is secured an eccentric block 35 by :means of a bolt 36 and if desiredsuitab-le pieces of leather 3'! and --38;beveled at their inner ends may be disposed between the eccentric 35 and the ends of the These are secured in position by any suitable means such as rivets 39.
In Figure 3 a slightly modified form of invention from that shown in Figure 2 appears, which has the same structure as the interior portion of that above described but has additional straps 40 and 4| which are overlapped at one end as at 42 and 43 and the rivets 34 are longer than in Figure 2 so as to penetrate the four layers 32, 33, 42, and 43. The form in Figure 3 is better adapted for heavy work as it gives a fourply construction at the inner end of the check strap.
In Figures 4, 5, and 6 a modified form of invention is shown which has the same construction at the left hand end as that shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3. The check strap in Figures 4 and 5 comprises straps 50 and 5| overlapped atboth ends as at 52, 53, 54 and 55 and secured together by rivets 56. In Figure 6, the inner straps 50 and 5| are the same as in Figure 5, but it has an end portion strap' is engaged by a picker stick;
outer straps 57 and 58 which are overlapped at their ends as at 59 and 60 at one end, and 6| and 62 at the other end and longer rivets 56 secure all overlapped ends together. In Figure 6, it is therefore seen that a strap of double thickness on the sides and quadruple thickness at the ends is provided. This not only gives very thick and long lasting wearing portions, but it is to be especially noted that in all forms of the invention short pieces' ofleather can be utilized instead of the long, rare andexpensive pieces of leather heretofore used.
In the drawings and specifications 2,893,148 i; if
. picker stick, and a wearing plug disposed between there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of .the
invention and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptivesense only andnot for purposes of limitation, the
scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
I claim: H V g 1., Acheck strap for checking the movement of a picker stick in looms comprising two pieces of pliable material forming two opposed side portions of the check strap and extending the entire length of the check strap, the two pieces of pliable material being overlapped and secured together at one end at the point where the check strap is engaged by the picker stick to provide an end portion having double thickness.
