T. R. BARTON PATCH FR LOOM LAYs Filed June 26, 1924 Patented Jan. 27, 1925.
THOMAS RUSSELL BARTON, OF ANDERSON, SOUTH CAROLINA.
IE'ATGH FOR LOOMI LAYS.
Application filed June 26, 1924. Serial No. 722,523.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, THOMAS R. BARTON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for one of its objects the provision of a novel and simple patch for a loom-lay that has been damaged, in the manner suggestedbv dotted lines in Figure 1, by the pulling therethrough of the bolt by which the check strap supporting lug is secured in place. 7
A further object of the invention'is the provision of a patch of the character set forth which shall be adapted to carry the check strap.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a View in side elevation of a portion of a lay with my invention applied thereto,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of the lap patch and check strap supporter.
In the drawing, 1 designates the longitudinally slotted lay, 2 the race plate of the lay, 3 the lay sword, 4 the wing of the lay sword, 5 the picker stick, and 6 the picker stick check strap of a loom of a well known construction. 7 designates the front plate, 8 the cover plate, and 9 the binder of the shuttle box of the loom. 10 is the abutment of the lay sword wing, and 11 is the bolt by which the inner end of the front guard, not shown, is secured to the lay sword wing 4.
My improved lay patch and check strap carrier comprises an elongated body 12.of angular formation in cross section, a downwardly extending check strap supporting lug 13, and a longitudinally extending at taching lug 14. hen the patch and holder is in applied position, the vertical portion of the body 12 contacts with the back side of the lay 1, the horizontal portion 16 of the body 12 contacts with the under side of the lay, and the lug 14 overlies the outer end of the sword wing 4. The patch and support is secured in place by a bolt 16 which passes through the lay 1 and through an opening 17 in the vertical portion 15 of the body 12, by screws 18 which pass through openings 19 in the horizontal portion 16 of the body 12 and enter the lay 1, and by the bolt 11 which passes through a hori- Zontally elongated opening 20 in the lug 14. The lug 13 is provided with an opening at 21 to permit the check strap 6 to be secured thereto by a bolt 22.
As shown in Figures 4 and 5, the attaching lug 14 is offset laterally in an outward direction with respect to the vertical portion 15 of the body 12, and due thereto the sword wing 4 will not prevent said vertical portion from fully contacting with the back side of the lay 1. The lug 13 is located near the outer end of the bodv 12, and the lug 14 extends inwardly from the inner end of the body 12 in a slightly downward direction.
The patch and carrier may be cast from any suitable metal. The body 12 extends across the fractured portion 1 of the lay 1, and due thereto and to the manner in which the patch and carrier is secured in place, the lay 1 is so reinforced that it is practically stronger than it originally was. As the opening 20 is horizontally elongated, the patch and carrier may be secured to the lays of looms having swords provided with wings of different lengths. patch and carrier may be secured to undamaged lays in order to prevent any damage thereto.
What is claimed is 1. A lay patch having an angular body adapted to be secured to the lay in contact with the back and under sides thereof and a lug adapted to be secured to the sword wing.
2. A lay patch having an angular body If desired the adapted to be secured to the lay of a loom, a lug at one end of the body adapted to be secured to the sword wingrof the; 100m,
' to be secured to the sword wing of the" loom.
at. A lay patch having a anangularabody adapted to be secured to the lay of a loom,
an attaching lug extending fromuone end of the body and offset with respect to one. of'the membersthereof and-provided with an elongated .opening and a aboltj'passin'gu throughrsaid.openingsand the sword wing of thetloo'rn.
i 5. A laypat ch havingzianangular body presenting yertically and horizontally dis-L posed membersadapted-to be secured ,to-r
the? 1ay., o the loom, and ,an. attaching o lug extendingif'roi'n one endofthe vertical-memher. and "offset-from the; inner facethe'reof and adapted .tobecsecured to the sword wing .7
of thellooms 6. A' lay: patch. having-an angularbody presenting Vertical 1 and horizontal members adapted: to be secured to thelay. of the-loom,
and an attaching-slug extending "from. one
end, of the vertical member: and offset outwardly with respectoto" the inner. sidevof said members and adapted to be secured to the sword Wing of the loom.
7. A lay patch havingian-angular body presenting horizontal and vertical members adapted to be secured to the lay of the 100111, an attaching lug extending from onev end-of the-verticalmember and offset in an outward direction with respect to the inner side thereof and adapted to be secured tothe-sword wing of the loom, and a supporting lug, extending downwardly from the body in alinementwwith said'vertical mamber and adapted to support the check-strap of the loom.
8. Alaypateh having-abody ada ted to be/secured to the layof a loom an a lug adapted to..be secured to .the sword wing -of the, loom.
9. A laypatohhat ing a-body ada ted to be secured .to the .lay. of a loonran ,a lug having: anwelongated opening and a bolt adapted to passv through said opening to secures-the lug to the sword wingof'the In'testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
