Be it known that I, MAX GoEHLnR, citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Coerected.
Hitherto the construction of buildings of cement or concrete has been conducted either by molding the Walls in position by the use of boxes or frames into which the concrete is poured, or on the other hand in the use of factory made cement or concrete blocks of such size as may be conveniently handled by one man. The former method has disadvantages in that the lumber used forms anexpensive item in the cost of construction and the walls being exposed to possibly adverse weather conditions take a long time to dry. The use of factory made building blocks has advantages in that the formation of them can be more cheaply and better performed in a factory but the size being usually limited the cost of laying or placing them in the wall of the building is considerable.
My object has been to reduce this cost of adopting wall sections of considerable size and by the use of a particular form of joint that will enable the blocks to be self-fitting in place and that will also have provision by which they may be bonded together and rendered weather-tight.
The invention is particularly described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, in which:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of a corner of a cottage built of wall sections in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2, a perspective view of a block detached showing the placing contour and the bonding grooves.
As shown in these drawings the wall sections 2 are of such size in their exposed surface that they may extend from the foundation course 3 or from the floor level to about halfway up a door or window, and therefrom to above the level of the Window, the
door or window space being left a portion from each section as shown in Fig. l.-
The contour of the joints of the sections has projections 4 which joggle or interlock into corresponding recesses between them of the contiguous section so that when the wall sections are placed together the correct loca-- tion of one section in relation to the others will be automatically determined.
As shown on the left hand side in Fig. 1 and the enlarged detail in Fig. 2, the interlocking projections 4 and the recesses between them may be Wavelike in outline, or, as shown to the right in Fig. 1, may have angular sided denticulations that will serve the required purpose of definitelylocatingthe endwise position of the wall section.
Along the mid thickness of the joints a deep groove 5 extends being formed in the projections 4 of each adjacent section, so that when the sections are placed together an uninterrupted passage will be left in both the vertical and the horizontal joints which, when the wall sections are in place, is filled with liquid or plastic cement which will not only render the joints weatherproof. but
forms an interlocking bond between the sec-v tions against displacement.
At the corners of the building the wall sections have horizontal projections 7 with corresponding interspaces to receive the projections of the adjacent wall section and will interlock one with the other, and passing vertically through each projection 7 is a cylindrical passage 8 which passages register one with the other when the sections are brought together and into which liquid or plastic cement may be poured by which, when set, the two walls are strongly held together. The upper course of the walls is provided with recesses 9 to receive the joists or rafters.
The inner side of the wall sections 'may be roughened-in any way to afford a secure hold to the wall plaster which it is designed shall be applied to the inside when finished and thus render the building-absolutely weather ooaose fVith the wall section so formed a building can be much more rapidly and economically constructed The sections being factory made the work can be carried on under closer supervision and under more favorable conditions both as regards quality of the product and the use of labor saving appliances, the molds can be of amore permanent character so as to be usable for a large number of buildings and after molding the wall sections may, before delivery to the building site, be dried in a drying room adapted for the purpose Where a draft of dry air may be maintained U11 removal to the building site, proper lifting tackle being provided, the various sections can be placed With great rapidity and owing to the form of the joint will require little trouble in setting as they will be self-directed to their proper posit-ion laterally and attention need only be given to .the face joints. As they are put together,
as the concrete Wall sections having been dried before leaving the factory will not require to stand any appreciable time thereafter.
Having now particularly described my vention, it hereby declare that what ll claim as new and desire to be protected in by Let ters Patent, is:
wall construction comprising sections having denticulated interlocking projections along their joint edges said projections having grooves parallel with the face of the wall that when the wall sections are together will form an uninterrupted passage extending vertically or horizontally along each joint, a filling othardening cement or the like in such passages the corner sections having interlocking projections, said interlocking projections of the sections which come together at the corners being provided with through apertures that will register with one another and with those of the contiguous section, and a filling 01": ccment in the passage so left.
