WILLIAM BAIRD, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 29, 1910.
Patented July 4, 1911. Serial No. 589,750.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM WV. BAIRD, a citizen of Canada, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahogaand State of Ohio, United States of America, have invented a new and Improved Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to boxes, and it has for one of its objects to provide a blank, which may be cut in one operation with very little waste and which may be quickly set up to form a box.
Another object of the invention is to provide a box which is strong and durable, with no creases to Weaken the walls of the box, the box being so constructed that when it is set up, the side walls cannot become dislodged, except when desired.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a box which may be set up very quickly.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete description.
In this specification I will describe the preferred form of my invention, it being understood that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View, showing my improved box with one of its ends open; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan View of the blank, from which the box is constructed; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line H of Fig. 2.
By referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that in a cardboard member 5, two longitudinal and parallel creases 6-6 are formed, which cross two transverse and parallel creases 7. The longitudinal creases, at the outer sides of the transverse creases 7, are cut as at 8, forming flaps 9, one at each corner of the member 5. The ends 10 of the cardboard member, between the flaps 9, have their corners rounded as at 11. There are also transverse creases 12, one in each of the ends 10. In the outer sides of each of the flaps 9, there is an obliquely-disposed recess 13. This blank, shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, is out and the creases are formed by one operation.
To set up the box, the portions 10 of the ends of the cardboard member 5, beyond the creases 12, are bent parallel with the inner portions 10 of the said ends, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and to each of these end portions 10 is secured the end portion 10 by means of two fasteners 14: as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, there being, however, a space between the end 10 and its portion 10 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This having been done, the side portions 15, at the outer sides of the longitudinal creases 6, are bent up, the flaps 9 are bent inwardly on the transverse creases 7, and the ends 10 are also bent upwardly on the transverse creases 7. When this has been done, the side portions 15 are bent inwardly and the flaps 9 are bent outwardly, the portions 10 at the ends 10 being at the same time slightly raised to permit the flaps 9 to be disposed in the space between the ends 10 and their portions 10 which are disposed parallel therewith and which are held in place by the fasteners 14. It will then be found that the fasteners 14 will be disposed in the recesses 13, which will hold the flaps 9 in place and which will therefore hold the side portions 15 in position relatively to the ends 10.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as nevv and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a box a blank having two folds spaced apart, two additional folds spaced apart at right angles to the firstmentioned folds, the blank being out along the firstmentioned folds from the intersection of the first and second mentioned folds to the ends of the box forming four flaps which have recesses in their outer sides, the ends of the box between the flaps being bent over to form grooves, the width of the flaps being the same as the distance between the secondment-ioned folds and the ends of the blank after they have been bent over to form the grooves, and fasteners disposed across the grooves which are normally disposed in the recesses in the flaps.
2. In a box a blank having two folds spaced apart, two additional folds spaced apart at right angles to the first-mentioned folds, the blank being out along the firstmentioned folds from the intersection of the first and second mentioned folds to the ends In testimony whereof I have signed my of the box forming four flaps having obname to this specification in the presence of liquely disposed recesses in their outer sides, tWo subscribing Witnesses.
the ends of the box between the flaps being WILLIAM W. BAIRD. bent over to form grooves in Which the flaps Witnesses:
are disposed, and fasteners disposed across MARK A. COPELAND,
the grooves and in the recesses in the flaps. G. B. KENNERDELL.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
