UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT P. BROWN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO BROWN, HESTON 8U OO., OF SAME PLACE.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,886. dated December 13, 1887.
Application lcd October 15, 1887.
To @ZZ whom may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT P. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following` speciiication and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a paper or pasteboard box of the order of k nockdown,p1'ovided with means whereby the ends and sides of the box are securely connected and prevented from separation, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure l represents a plan view of a boxblank embodying' my invention, the saule beingin flat or open condition. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the box as setup for use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two gures. l
Referring to the drawings, A represents a box, the same being formed of a piece of suitable paper, pasteboard, card-board, Sto., embodying the bottom a, sides b, and ends c. At the ends of the side pieces are flaps B, and in the en d pieces, c, are slits O to receive said flaps. In the end pieces, c, are tongues D, and in the flaps B are slits E to receive said tongues D, it being noticed that the tongues D are punched or otherwise cutout of the solid part of the end pieces,.c, near the flaps B.
The slits or slots O E and tongues D are parallel with the side pieces, b. The ilaps B are tapering, so as to readily enter the slits C. The tongues D project in a direction toward the bottom a.
The box is primarily furnished to the consumer or customer in its opened-out or un folded condition, as seen in Fig. l; hence a pile of boxes may be readily made convenient for packing and transportation.
When a box is required, the sides b and ends c are bent up and the iaps B placed outside of said ends c, thus leaving the tongues D behind said iaps. The flaps are then inserted in the slits O, whereby the ends are within the box. The tongues D are now fitted in the slits E and appear on the outside of the flaps B, overlapping or overhanging the bottom walls of said slits E.
It will be seen that the flaps are doubly c011- nected with the end pieces-viz., at the places Serial No. 252,43?. (No model.)
of entrance of said flaps into the slits C, `and at the places where the tongues D engage with said flaps; hence the connection of each Hap with the adjacent end piece is at the opposite ends of the flap, whereby the sides and ends of the box are reliably secured and prevented from disconnection in every direction.
By withdrawing the tongues D from the slits E the aps may be readily slipped from the slits O and the sides and ends of the box thereby separated.
It is evident that the iaps may be formed on the end pieces and the tongues on the side pieces,v the slits being correspondingly arranged, without, however, producing diierent results from those stated.
I am well aware that it is not new to construct a box of the character described, having its ends and sides provided with tongues and slits, by which the same are readily secured in place; but I am not aware that the particular construction herein described and claimed is old, wherein the sides are provided with flaps having ends adapted to enter slits in the end portions of the box, and slits adapted to receive a tongue cut in said end portions, the said flaps being adapted to be bent at right angles to said sides and placed in parallel planes with the end portions, whereby each end portion is doubly secured to each iiap of the side portions.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A paper box composed of a single piece of material, having the bottom a, with the ends c, and the sides b, the sides having flaps B with slits E andthe ends having slits C and tongues D, the ends of said iiaps being adapted to enter the slits O and the tongues Dto enter the slit E, whereby the aps ofthe sides and the end portions are doubly 'secured together, the direction of the said tongues being toward the bottom a and the slits O and E being parallel with each other and the sides b, substan tially as described.
ROBERT P. BROWN.
