IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl; of the same.

Be it known that we, DANIEL POMEROY, of the city, county, and State of New York, and WILLIAM POMEROY, of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Hernial Pads, being an improvement of the hernial pad, called a finger-pad, for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to said WILLIAM POMEROY, August 25, 1868, and numbered 81,533; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 represents a top view of the frame-workof our improved hernia] finger-pad.

Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in the difiercnt figures.

Our invention consists in an ingenious and useful combination of the finger-pad of WILLIAM PoMERoY' above mentioned, and the prolongation of a hernia] pad as heretoibre used.

The prolongation or extension, marked F in the figures, as made by us, is an extension of the fi'ame-work A, which surrounds the small pad B, which framework itself .forms a part of our complete pad, and assists materially in controllingand retaining the hernia. This I extension is. made of flexible material, and is slightly bent or curved, so as to clasp the 0s pubis.

The jointed finger B is capable of adjustment with- {in the ii'ame-work A by the device described in the specification accompanying said Letters Patent No. 81,533, without disturbing the position of the framework A or the extension F, so that the jointed pad 13 shall bear properly upon the rupture to close the hernial ring and retain the hernia.

" The extending finger F, clasp'ing the 0s pubis, prevents any upward movement of the compound pad, while the frame-work or rim A retains its position, and forms a supportimmediatelysurrounding the hernia, and'assisting in its retention.

\Ve make the jointed finger B of size to fit the her-;

nial opening as nearly as may be, and in line with it make a groove in the padding of the flame-work A, so as to avoid pressure on the spermatic cord.

We make the rim A with an 'aperture, of sutficient width to admit of a lateral motion of the jointed finger B, and also to give 'an opening for ventilation to the pad in its action on'the body. I

The jointed finger B is hinged, at a, with the rim A, by a clasping-joint, i 1', the under portion of which is fitted with a thread for the screw 0, which forms a pivot for the eccentric l), and the hinge i i also, where it clasps the rim A. i

The eccentric I) has a serrated periphery working against a corrugated shoulder, c, and serves to hold the jointed finger B in position. I The rim A,'in certain cases where it is desirable to bring the jointed finger B near the bend of the thigh,

The jointed finger B may be attached to the rim A, on the lower side of the same,at y, when desir-. able, as in cases of indirect inguinal hernia, where the main pressure of the finger B should come upon the internal ring. I

We do not claim the prolongation of a pad for any purpose, nor the formation of a pad with an opening for the insertion of a smaller pad; but

The combination of the frame-work or rim A with the extension F and the finger-pad B, Forming a compound hernial pad, constructed substantially as above described, for the uses and purposes set fort-h.
