IMPROVEMENT IN NOSE-CLAMPS FOR EYEGLASSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 217,835, dated July 22, 1879; application filed June 7, 1879'.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NICHOLAS WATRY, of the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a Nose Clamp for Eyeglasses; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to an improved noseclamp for eyeglasses; and my improvement consists in making the clamp, which is fitted between the frames to hold them in position on the nose, of spiral springs, instead of a stiff band, so that, while the eyeglasses are firmly held, there will be no undue pressure on the nasal organ.

The accompanying drawing is a view of my improved spring, showing its application.

Ordinarily eyeglasses are made with small bands or bows of light steel, which press against the nose and hold the bows or glasses in position. These are at times very uncomfortable, for in case the upper spring-bow is stiff and strong, as it should be, an undue pressure'will be exerted on the sides of the nose. It has been attempted to remedy this defect by putting rubber on the bands, so as to have a soft substance next to the skin; but the stiffness of the bands is not lessened by the addition of the rubber.

The bows a have the usual connecting-spring b, which, when the bows are sprung apart over the nose, exerts its pressure in holding them against the nose. On the inner sides of the bows, where the steel bands are usually placed,

I fix the spiral-spring clamps c, suitably secured to the bows, so as to be at a sufficient distance from them to allow the springs a certain amount of motion. These spiral springs are sensitive and easily moved, so they will adapt themselves to the shape of the Wearers nose readily. Being soft and yielding they will not be uncomfortable, while at the same time they hold the glasses on more firmly even than stifi steel springs.

Any suitable material may be employed in the construction of these springs, which may form a circular, elliptical, or flattened section, as may be desired. These clamps may be made neat and occupy no more room than the ordinary clamps; but they render the wearing of eyeglasses much more comfortable than at present.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In combination withthe bows a and their connecting-spring b, the nose-clamp 0, constructed of spiral springs, whereby the clamps readily adapt themselves to the shape of the nose, and hold the glasses in position without undue pressure at any one point, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
