Be it known that I, FRANCIS H. AUDLEY. a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic-Gun Holsters, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to holsters for pistols or revolvers, and particularly to holsters for automatic guns of this class, and the object thereof is to provide a holster which will securely hold the gun therein so that said gun cannot be accidentally removed from the holster and will not drop out of the same.

The invention is an improvement on the holster described and claimed in a patent of the United States issued to me February 4, 1908, No. 881,044. In this case the holster was particularly designed for use in connection with an ordinary revolver having a cylinder, and the object of my present invention which forms the basis of this application is to adapt the holster described and claimed in the said patent for use in connection with an automatic gun such as the Savage and Colt.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a holster embodying my invention and an automatic gun of the Savage type placed therein; Fig. 2 a back view of said holster; Fig. 3 a partial horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 a transverse sect-ion on the line 4lt of Fig. 1.

In the practice of my invention, I provide a holster or having a pocket Z) adapted to receive the gun 0, the handle of which is shown at 0 the barrel indicated in dotted lines at 0 the breech portion of the gun being also indicated in dotted lines at o and the trigger and trigger guard being indicated in dotted lines at c in Fig. 1.

The pocket Z2 is shaped, in the construction shown, to correspond with the shape of the gun, the front thereof being tapered backwardly as shown at b so that the bottom portion 5 of said pocket receives only the end of the barrel of the gun.

The holster consists of a back member a and a front member a and at the open end of the pocket, the back member a is projected to form an extension a while the front part of the said pocket at the larger end thereof is cut away as shown at a so as to permit of the gun being inserted into the pocket, the handle 0 thereof extending downwardly and being uncovered so that it may be conveniently grasped by the hand in the operation of removing the gun from the holster.

Ranging transversely of the front side of the pocket and over the trigger and trigger guard of the gun is a spring (Z which is shown in full lines in Fig. 4:, and indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and also indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The front of the pocket is composed of inner and outer members, or an outer member and a lining as shown at c in Figs. 3 and l, and the back of the holster, or back of the pocket is also composed of outer and inner parts, or an outer part and a lining, as shown at f in said figures, and the spring (Z is placed between the separate parts of the front of the pocket and a longitudinally ranging spring 9 is placed in the back of the holster and back of the pocket and extends forwardly of the trigger guard and trigger as indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2, and the inner end thereof terminates at 9 while the outer end of said spring is folded at g and bent to form a forwardly directed spring 9 which also extends or is curved outwardly, and which is covered by the outer part thereof of the pocket and which, in practice, abuts against the handle a of the gun at 9 and holds the gun in the pocket: of the holster when said gun is inserted into the pocket of the holster, and in the operation of inserting the gun into the pocket of the holster, the spring member 9 is bent backwardly, and when the gun is fully inserted into the pocket said spring member moves outwardly into the position shown in Fig. 3.

The spring member d serves to retain the pocket of the holster in proper form at all times and also presses on the breech portion of the gun and forces it backwardly, and in this way operates in connection with the spring member 9* to hold the gun in the pocket, and in the operation of removing the gun from the pocket of the holster the handle g is grasped by one hand and the thumb of said hand is inserted between said handle and the back of the holster along the line indicated by the arrow 00 in Fig. 1, and in this way forces the back of the holster and the spring member 9 backwardly and the gun may be easily withdrawn from the pocket of the holster.

My invention is not'limited to the exact shape of the holster herein shown and described, and the said holster may be of the same width throughout its length, if desired, nor is my invention limited to the exact construction of the spring members 9 and 9* herein shown and described, all that is necessary in this connection being to provide the spring member 9 which will operate as shown and described.

In Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawing, I have shown the back of the holster provided with an oblong link member h, the object and use of which is shown and described in an application for Letters Patent of the United States filed by me 011 July 5, 1910, Serial No. 570,211 for a patent on pistol holster carriers, and said link device or member forms no part of this invention.

In automatic guns of the class referred to, the handle 9 thereof projects almost at right angles to the breech portion of the gun, and in order to accommodate a holster to this class of guns and make said holster of proper shape and length, it is necessary to cut out the front portion of the larger end of the pocket as shown at a, and while I prefer to use the spring 1) shown and described, there may be cases in which said spring would not be an essential element as the spring member 9* would ordinarily serve the desired purpose of holding the gun in the pocket of the holster.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An automatic gun holster, comprising a back portion and a front pocket portion forming a pocket open at one end, the back portion of the holster being extended beyond the opening of the pocket and the front part of said holster at the opening of the ooaeoa pocket being cut away to receive the handle of the gun, the extended back part of the back portion of the holster being provided rearwardly of the pocket and rearwardly of the cut away front portion thereof with a V-shaped spring comprising a longer and a shorter arm, the shorter arm extending outwardly and forwardly and being adapted to bear on the back of the handle of the gun when said gun is inserted into said pocket and the longer arm being extended longitudinally of the back of the holster and back of the handle of the gun, the shorter arm of said spring being adapted to be released by the thumb in the operation of grasping the handle of the gun to remove it from the holster.

2. An automatic gun holster, comprising aback portion and a front pocket portion forming a pocket open at one end, the back portion of the holster being extended beyond the opening of the pocket and the front part of said holster at the opening of the pocket being cut away to receive the handle of the gun, the extended back part of the back portion of the holster being provided rearwardly of the pocket and rearwardly of the cut away front portion thereof with a V- shaped spring comprising a longer and a shorter arm, the shorter arm extending outwardly and forwardly and being adapted to bear on the back of the handle of the gun when said gun is inserted into said pocket and the longer arm being extended longitudinally of the back of the holster and back of the handle of the gun, the shorter arm of said spring being adapted to be released by the thumb in the operation of grasping the handle of the gun to remove it from the holster, and the front of said holster forwardly of the cut away portion being provided with a transverse spring.
