EXTENSION-GRIP FOR REVOLVERS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1905.
Application filed March 6, 1905- Serial No. 248.434.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE A. BARIBEAULT, a citizen of the United States, residing at -Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Extension-Grip for Revolvers, of which the following, together with the accompanying drawings, is a specification sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable persons skilled in the art to which this invention appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my present invention is to provide an extension-grip device for attachment to the butt or handle of a common revolver or pistol upon the rear and lower end thereof and adapted for fitting the palm and under part of the hand in order to afford a more firm and secure hold of the pistol when firing and for enabling the operator to retain the pistol in the hand with greater ease and without liability of its being displaced by the recoil when fired or taken from the possession by another person.
Another object is to provide a detachable extension-grip device adapted for attachment to the back and lower end of the pistol butt or handle and having a rearward swell or protuberance for engagement with the palm of the hand, a rearwardly-projecting lug at the lower extremity for engagement beneath the lower edge of the hand, and a forward portion having an attaching-ear that engages the forward angle of the pistol-butt; also, to provide a grip device of the character set forth, provided with an opening through the lower or extension portion for admitting a finger, said opening being formed to accommodate the knuckle or joint of the finger, as more fully hereinafter explained.
For the attainment of these objects my invention consists in a grip-piece constructed and adapted for combination with a pistolbutt in the manner illustrated in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a side view of my extension-grip attached to a revolver. Fig. 2 represents a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a separate side view of the grip-piece, showing the, opposite side from that shown in Fig. 1'; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the extension at the position of lineX X on Fig. 3.
This invention is applicable to small firearms or pistols of various kinds, but is more especially designed for employment as an attachment to revolvers of the ordinary modern types, wherein the pistol-butt is formed with a centrally-disposed metal frame having attached to its opposite sides outwardly-rounded ornamental scales or plates of hard rubber or other suitable non-metallic material. An example of such is shown in the accompanying drawings, whereon A denotes the frame, B the handle or pistol-butt, C the cylinder, and D the barrel, which members are combined, together with the working parts or action mechanism, in any suitable well-known form of construction and constituting .an ordinary revolver.
The extension-grip attachment embodying my invention consists of a body or piece G, preferably made of metal or other suitable material and shaped with an inner contour at 2 t0 fit the back outline of the pistol-butt frame A, while its lower end extends below the end 3 of the pistol-butt, substantially as shown. The exterior of the grippiece is formed with a rearward swell or protuberance 5 of a form suitable for countermatching the depression or hollow at the palm of the hand and below said swell with an inward curvature 6 and a rearwardly and downwardly projecting lug or heel portion 7, adapted for resting or engagement against the lower edge of the hand. The grip-piece G extends forward beneath the pistol-butt, with a rounded front portion 10, and is best provided with a member or ear 9, overlapping the angle at the front of the butt-end, and through which an attaching-screw 12 is arranged. The top end of the grip-piece at 8 is formed comparatively thin and suitably rounded off to meet the surface on the back of the pistol-butt frame.
Within the forward portion of the grippiece and below the end of the pistol-butt there is an opening 13, through which the fourth finger of the operator may be inserted. The front wall of this opening I form, substantially as illustrated, with an outward incline or bevel at 15 on the right-hand side of the grip-piece, which bevel accommodates the knuckle or joint of the finger in a manner that insures an easier and better clasp thereon when the finger is closed through the opening.
The extension-grip G is preferably made laterally flat and approximately the same or slightly more or less width than the metal pistol-frame A where it lies between the buttplates, and the outer or rear edge of the grippiece is slightly rounded, as at 6, Fig. 4, so as to afford easy engagement against the hand.
The grip-piece is detachably secured to the back of the pistol-butt B by screws 16, one or more, so that it forms a rigid extension attachment thereon when in use.
The device is intended to be put on sale as an article of manufacture to be sold and applied to any common revolver, the inner or fitting contour of the grip-pieces being for the different instances modified to correspond with the various styles of pistol-butt shapes.
As a modification of shape in some instances, if desired, the lower forward part of the grip-piece may be provided with a forwardly and downwardly projecting lug, approximately as indicated by dotted lines at 17 on Fig. 3.
The lower end of the extension-grip being by reason of the lug 7 and front extension 10 broader than the part above cannot readily be drawn from a hand gripped thereon, as may be done with the plain pistol-butt. Hence a person is not liable to lose hold of the pistol as readily as in cases where the extension-grip is not employed.
VVhatI claim as of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a detachable extension-grip for revolvers; comprising an extension-piece adapted for application and securernent to the back and lower end of an ordinary pistol-butt, said piece provided with a backward protuberance or swell to match the palm of the hand, and with a rearwardlycurved lug at the bottom end thereof.
2. As an article of manufacture, an extension-grip for revolvers, consisting of an extension-piece adapted for attachment and detachment at position along the back and lower end of an ordinary pistol-butt; and formed with a backward protuberance or swell for engaging the palm of the hand; a rearwardly and downwardly projecting lug for engaging the lower edge of the hand, and having in its lower forward portion an opening for the insertion of a finger.
3. An extension-grip for revolvers, consisting of an extension-piece readily attachable to and detachable from a pistol-butt. and having a member that fits upon the back of the pistol-butt, formed with a rearwardly-outward swell, a lower portion that extends beyond the bottom end of the pistol-butt provided with rearwardly downwardly projecting lug, a finger-opening in said lower portion. and an ear for an attaching-screw at the front angle of the pistol-butt end.
4. In an extension-grip attachment for revolvers, having a portion that extends below the pistol-butt; a finger-opening having its forward part inclined, or beveled off to accommodate the knuckle orjoint of the finger, and said beveled portion forming an approximately straight line at the left-hand side of the opening, substantially as set forth.
5. In combination with a pistol-butt, a detachable supplementary extension-grip forming an extension upon the back and lower end of the pistol-butt, and provided with a backward swell 5, an inward curvature 6 below said swell, a rearwardly and downwardly projecting lug 7 below said curvature, and a finger-opening 13 through the forward portion of said extension, said opening provided with an inclined or beveled contour 15 at the front of the opening.
Witness my hand this 2d day of March, 1905.
