GUN ATTACHMENT- Specification of Letters Patent.

Beitknown that I, ALFRED T. WIGHT, acitizen of the United States, residing at Roxton, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Gun Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in gun attachments, being in the nature of a handle adapted for application to rifles and shotguns; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement as in use. Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view of the handle. Fig. 3 is a front view thereof, and Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of one of the sections of the clasp.

The invention is intended to be applied to the barrels of rifles and shotguns to be grasped by the left hand or the right hand, as the case may be, in supporting the barrel end of the gun. In aiming a gun in the ordinary way the palm of the hand of the extended arm is upward, and swinging the muzzle of the gun around at difierent times the weakest and least used muscles of the arm are employed. This operation also puts the arm in such shape that it is nearly straight from the wrist to the shoulder and the operator has no use of the elbow-joint. The improved device obviates this difficulty, gives the free use of the elbowjoint, and brings into play muscles which are already developed and strengthened, thereby improving the aim of the operator and relieving him from the fatigue of continually holding his extended arm in strained position. The invention also enables the operator to take the force of the recoil in his extended arm, and thus prevent the gun from injuring his face or shoulder. At the same time the im proved attachment provides one of the most comfortable and convenient ways of carrying the gun, permitting the operator to carry it with the muzzle down and the arm hanging freely at the side in the same position as when walking. The handle also protects the hand from the heated or cold barrel and gives the ishoolter firm hold of the gun by his extended 1an As shown, the handle attachment comprises a clasp A, adapted to grip the gun-barrel, and a depending handle B, which projects below the barrel in use and is adapted to be readily grasped by the hand of the shooter. The clasp A is preferably a spring-clasp, adapted to grip the barrel by a spring action, and comprises the opposite body sections A, which are curved in the cross-section to conform to the opposite sides of the gun-barrel and preferably taper slightly from end to end in order to conform to the taper of the gun-barrel, and thus facilitate the application of the clasp to the barrel and the tightening of the clasp on the barrel when the clasp is adjusted to proper position for use. y

The body-sections A are each provided with depending plates A forming shanks which connect with the sections B and B of the handle B. As shown, the handle-section B is arranged between the shank-plates A and spaces the same apart, while the sections B of the handle fit against the outer sides of the shanks A the shanks and handle-sections being riveted or otherwise suitably secured together in order to form a rigid handle, which is adapted to be gripped by the hand of the extended arm, as will be understood from the drawings. This handle, it will be noticed, can be conveniently applied to any ordinary rifle or shotgun and slipped back thereon to position for use, and will when in such position be held by the taper and spring of the clasp. It may in some instances be desirable to arrange the clasp so it may slide slightly along the barrel in the use of the device, but I prefer to provide means for positively securing the clasp to the barrel, and this may preferably be accomplished by means of a thumb clamp-screw (1, connecting the sections of the spring-clasp, as shown, and adapted to be tightened in such manner as to clamp the clasp securely to the barrel whenever desired, and at the same time permit the clasp to be readily released for removal, adjustment, or for any other purpose.

The sections may be cut away in their rear ends, as shown in Fig. 2, to fit around the forearm of the gun-stock, or, if desired, may be further cut away, so that the handle attachment may slide back on the barrels and the forearm as in the case with a man with very short arms.

In practice the clasp-sections may be lined with leather or other soft material to prevent scratching of the barrels, and, if desired, the handle may be covered with leather to give a proper finish to the same.

In practice the handle attachment may be manufactured on a power-press, with the shanks of the two-clasp sections formed to provide the handle or grip and suitably fastened together with rivets and thumb-screws and covered inside and out with leather or other suitable covering, as before described, this construction being provided with an adjusting-screw G to dispense with the wooden sections, as will be understood from the drawings and foregoing description.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The improved handle for guns herein described,comprising thespringsclasphaving the opposite body-sections curved in cross-section to conform to a gun-barrel, and tapering longitudinally from end to end, the shankplates depending from the inner edges of the opposite clasp-sections, the handle-section between the said shank-plates, the handle-sections fitting against the outer sides of the shank-plates, means for securing the handlesections and the shank-plates together, and a clamping-screw connecting the opposite claspsections and adapted to bind the same securely upon the barrel, substantially as set forth.

2; The improved handle attachment for guns, comprising a tapered spring-clasp formed of two elongated body-sections curved transversely and formed of ,spring metal and arranged opposite and inclined toward each other longitudinally, or from rear end to front end, and provided with pendent plates and means for securing them together to form a handle portion, as shown and described.
