Description

G. HAMMOND.
BREECH BOLT FOR FIREARMS. APPLICATION FILED IAN.25. Isis.
1,1 98,380. Patented Sept. 12, 1916.
WITNESSES:
( I ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GRANT HAMMOND, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO DALTON ARMS CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK. I
BREEGH-BOLT non FIREARMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented se t. 12, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GRANT HAMMOND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Breech-Bolt for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of devices used in firearms to force a cartridge into the barrel and to fire the cartridge, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a device of this class that shall be highly efficient as to strength and durability, and one that shall be extremely simple in its construction.
One form of breech-bolt embodying my invention, and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a breech-bolt embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear end view, and Fig. 4 is a front end view.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates the body of the bolt that is of substantially cylindrical form from end to end, the front end being recessed as at 6 to receive the head of a cartridge shell and with a small opening 7 through which the forward end of a firing pin projects.
In referring to the positions of the parts upon the bolt in the description herein, the bolt is considered as being in its normal closed position in the chamber in the gun. Lugs 8 are formed upon the opposite top and bottom sides of the bolt at its front end and an ejector slot 9 is cut on one side at the end of the bolt and into which slot an ejector is moved to force a cartridge shell away from the end of the bolt. The bolt is reduced at a point intermediate its ends to provide a channel 10 in which an extractor strap is located, and a groove 11 is cut partially around the bolt in its under and side surface and rearwardly of the reduced part 10, and preferably nearer the back end of the bolt, and in position to receive a lip from an extractor. A handle 12 for turning the bolt upon its axis extends from one side of the bolt near its back end, said handle being extended downwardly from a point a short distance from the side of the bolt, and a hub 13, substantially of the same thickness as the handle, is formed at the base thereof and extends partially around the bolt, said hub being located underneath the base of the handle. The back end of the bolt rearwardly of said handle base is reduced as at 14, this reduced part being threaded for insertion in a sleeve. A spiral cam 15 is cut through the side walls of the bolt at the back end on the under side thereof, and a notch 16 is formed in the side surface of the bolt near its back end and on the opposite side of the bolt from which the lever handle 12 projects.
While I have shown and described herein a satisfactory construction of breech-bolt embodying my invention, this may be departed from to a greater or lesser degree and yet be within the spirit and intent of the invention, which is, therefore, not limited to the exact construction herein shown and described.
I claim 1. A breech-bolt for a gun, said bolt having two solid uncut lugs at its front end, an ejector slot extending through the face of the bolt at one end, a reduced portion in which to assemble an extractor strap, a groove cut partially around the bolt and located rearwardly of said reduced part, a lever handle projecting laterally from the bolt to turn it upon its axis, said handle having a hub at its base extending partially around the bolt, said bolt having a threaded reduced end with a spiral cam cut through its wall, and a notch cut into the outer surface of its wall near the back end.
2. A breech-bolt for a gun, having two solid uncut lugs at its front end, an ejector slot cut into the side wall and extending through its face, a reduced portion in which to assemble an extractor strap, a groove cut partially around the bolt between said reduced part and the back end of the bolt, portion at the back end of the bolt projectan operating handle lever projecting from ing rearwardly from the back edge of the one side of the bolt, said handle having a lever handle base, a spiral cam cut into the 10 hub at its base of substantially the same back end of the bolt on its under surface, thickness as said base and extending part and a notch in the side surface of the bolt way around the bolt and lying normally unopposite said lever handle.
derneath the handle base, a threaded reduced GRANT HAMMOND.
