ITED srarnsra rn nnro FRANK B. PATTERSON, OF BULLSKIN TOWNSHIP, FAYETTE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA,
ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO WASHINGTON HERD, OF GONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYL- VANIA.
GUN.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Bullskin township, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to guns, and more particularly to a take down mechanism which will permit of parts of the gun being disassembled and easily carried in a case.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a take down for guns, without in any way sacrificing strength and durability.
Another object of this invention is to provide a take down for guns that can be safely used, the parts being securely locked together whereby they cannot become accidentally displaced.
A. further object of this invention is to provide a take down mechanism that can be advantageously used in connection with that type of gun commonly styled the Savage.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described in detail and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it must be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed, as to the size, propor tion and manner of assemblage, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gun involving my invention, partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the gun, Fig. 3 is an end view of the butt stock portion of the gun, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detached locking member adapted to form partof the gun, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a latch adapted to be used in connection with the movable locking member, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a portion of a latch plate adapted to form part of the take down mechanism, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a portion of the'latch plate.
In the accompanying drawing, I have Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 20, 1909.
Patented Mar. 22, 1910.
Serial No. 523,720.
illustrated in detail those portions of a rifle of the Savage type that relate to my invention, the reference numeral 1 denoting the butt stock portion of the rifle, which is provided with a cylindrical socket 2 having the inner walls threaded to receive the shank 4 of a barrel 5. The barrel 5 is provided with a depending socket 6 for an assembling screw 7, this screw being mounted in a socket 8 carried by the fore end piece 9. As an additional connection for the fore end piece 9, the barrel 5 intermediate the socket 6 and the shank at is provided with a depending lug 10, which is adapted to extend through an escutcheon plate 11 into a recess 12 provided therefor in the fore end piece 9, said escutcheon plate being carried by said fore end piece.
The larger end of the fore end piece 9 has the under side thereof provided with a latch plate 13 forming an extension of a breech piece 14, which is provided with another extension 16 secured to the upper face of the fore end piece 9. The breech piece is provided with a semi-cylindrical opening 17 communicating with a recess 18 within the fore end piece 9. In the opening 17 is slidably mounted a movable semi-cylindrical locking member 19 having a forwardly extending arm 20 adapted to extend into the recess 18, where said arm is connected by a screw 21 to a latch 22 slidably mounted in an opening 23 provided therefor in the latch plate. The outer side of the latch 22 is serrated or roughened to permit of said latch being easily moved. Vith the parts of the gun assembled, the locking member 19 protrudes from the opening 17 and is retained in such position by a spring held pin 23 mounted in a cup shaped depression 2% formed in the latch plate 13. The inner end of the pin extends through the plate 13 and is retained in position by a nut 25 while the outer end is provided with a head and inter posed between the head and the bottom of the depression is a coil spring 26 which encircles said pin. The inner end of the pin '23 extends into the recess 18, while the headed end thereof is adapted to engage the front end of the latch 22 and hold the member 19 in a projected position relative to the breech piece 14.
The shell 2 1 forming the casing of the breech is provided with vertically alining openings 25 and 26 for a vertical pin 27 adapted to extend through the opening 25 and engage in a recess or notch 28 provided therefor in the threaded shank 4 of the barrel 5. The lower end of the pin 27 is provided with a-transverse pin 29 adapted to limit the downward movement of the pin 27, and intermediate the ends of said pin is a collar 30, Interposed between the collar 30 and the socket 2 is a coiled spring 31 adapted to normally retain the pin 27 in a lowered position.
A take down constructed in accordance with my invention is manipulated in the following manner: Assuming that the fore end piece 9 has been connected to the barrel 5 by the assembling screw 7 and the lug 10. IVith the barrel 5 detached from the butt stock portion of the gun, and the actuating-lever 82 in an open position, it is only necessary to screw the shank 4 into the socket 2 of the butt stock portion. As this operation pro gresses, the notch 28 gradually moves into position to receive the upper end of the pin 27, and to move said pin into the notch 28, the movable locking member 19 is moved into the shell 24 to engage the collar 30 and force the in upwardly. The locking member 19 is tlien held in position by the pin 23. The actuating-lever can then be closed and the gun is ready for firing, providing shells are in the magazine thereof. To disassemble the parts, the pin 23 is pressed inwardly and the latch 22 moved forwardly over the pin, thus releasing the pin 27 and allowing the spring 31 thereof to remove said pin from the notch 28. The barrel 5 can then be unscrewed.
From the foregoing it will be observed that my improved take down mechanism offers many advantages to the user of a gun, both for convenience in carrying and ease in cleanmg.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. In a gun take down, the combination with a butt stock portion having a breech casing, a barrel adapted tov screw into said but-t stock portion, and a fore end piece detachably connected to said barrel, of a breech piece carried by said fore end piece, a movable locking member carried by said breech piece and adapted to extend into said breech casing, and a movable pin located in said casing and adapted to be held in engagement with the threaded end of said barrel by said movable locking member.

a movable locking member carried by said breech piece and adapted to extend into said breech casing, a movable pin located in said casing and adapted to be held in engagement with the threaded end of said barrel by said movable locking member, and means carried by said breech piece for locking the movable member thereof in engagement with the pin of said breech piece.
3. In a gun take down, the combination with the butt stock portion, and a breech casing forming part thereof, and a barrel detachably supported by said butt stock portion, of a fore end piece detachably connected to said barrel, a breech piece carried by said fore end piece, a movable locking member arranged in said breech piece and adapted to extend into said casing, a movable pin arranged in said casing and adapted to engage and lock said barrel, and means carried by said breech piece for shifting said movable locking member into engagement with said pin.
4. In a gun take down, the combination with the butt stock portion, and a breech casing forming part thereof, and a barrel detachably supported by said butt stock portion, of a fore end piece detachably connected to said barrel, a breech piece carried by said fore end piece, a movable locking member arranged in said breech piece and adapted to extend into said casing, a movable pin arranged in said casing and adapted to engage and lock said barrel, means carried by said breech piece for shifting said movable locking member into engagement with said pin, and means carried by said breech piece to lock said movable member in engagement with said pin.
5. In a gun take down, the combination with the butt stock portion of a gun having a threaded socket, a barrel adapted to screw into said socket, and a fore end piece carried by said barrel, of a breech piece carried by said fore end piece and adapted to confront the butt stock portion, a spring pressed pin located in the butt stock portion and adapt ed to engage the threaded end of said barrel, a movable locking member arranged in said breech piece and adapted to hold said pin in engagement with said barrel, a latch connected to said locking member, and a pin carried by said breech piece and adapted to engage said latch for retaining said member in engagement with said pin.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
