TAKE-DOWN FIREARM.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. CHADWICK, of Utica, in the'co'unty of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Take-Down Firearms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art t0 which it appertains to make and use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a takedoWn construction for fire arms which is simple and effective in its construction, easily and conveniently operated and not liable to get out of working order.
In the drawings Figure l shows a side elevation of a hre arm wherein the take-down construction of my invention is embodied. Fig. 2 shows on an enlarged scale from Fig. l a partial side elevation of the barrel removed from the receiver or frame and having the fore arm replaced in position on the barrel and shown mostly in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the fore arm removed from the barrel, showing particularly the catch by means of which it is secured to the barrel and other details. Fig, 4 shows in perspective section a portion of the barrel and a portion of the fore stock showing details hereinafter referred to. Fig. 5 shows on an enlarged scale partially in section the frame and parts of the barrel and fore stock illustrating details of the construction. Fig. 6 shows the frame with the barrel removed and a portion of the frame shown in section. Fig. 7 shows a side elevation of the rear end of the barrel removed from the frame. Fig. S shows a bottom view of the same. Fig. 9 shows a rear end view of the barrel and the fore stock when it is detached from the frame and reassembled. Fig. l0 shows a similar view of a modified form of construction.
Referring to the reference letters and figures in a more particular description7 l indicates the frame of the gun, 2 the barrel, and 3 the fore stock which are the main parts with which we have to deal. The frame l is provided with a barrel socket 4 having interrupted screw threads 5 therein. The socket 4 is adapted to receive the rear end of the barrel 2 which is sized to be received therein and is provided with an interrupted screw thread 6 adapted to engage and cooperate with the screw threads of the barrel socket. The lower portion of the frame l in the form of construction illustrated, includes a magazine chamber, the forward open end of which forms a socket 7 of circular form which receives the projection 8 on the rear end of the fore stock 3. This projection 8 is preferably formed on a collar piece 9 employed or provided on the rear end of the fore stock which fore stock is preferably of wood except as to the collar 9 and other details hereinafter mentioned. The collar 9 is provided with wing-like portions 9l1 adapted to extend up on either side of the rear end of the barrel and fore end of the frame, and is also provided with a bit l0 adapted to engage in a recess 2l in the under side of the barrel, and may also engage, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, in a recess 4a in the forward end of the wall of the socket 4, This latter feature of engaging in a recess in the wall of the forward end of the socket 4 maybe omitted, however, in which case the bit l0 would only be made of sufficient length to engage in the recess 2 in the under side of the barrel forward of the end of the socket 4.
At a suitable point forward of the frame on the under side the barrel 2 is provided with a rigid stud or projection ll, which is provided with an inclined catch shoulder adapted to be engaged by a catch bolt l2 provided in a small casing 13 secured in a suitable recess in the forward portion of the fore arm 3. The bolt 12 is impelled towards a locked position by a spring 14 and adapted to be moved to unlocked position by a thumb piece l5 connecting with the bolt. The forward portion of the catch frame I3 is provided with an inclined face as indicated at 13, which serves to draw or move the fore stock toward the rear as the same is moved toward the barrel, and the recess in the fore stock which receives the catch stud or projection ll is also arranged to fit quite closely the forward side of the stud projection in order to prevent relative longitudinal movement of the fore stock and barrel when detached from the frame and reassembled. It will be noted that the inclined shoulder on the bolt l2, cooperating with the inclined shoulder on the catch stud ll, serve to draw the fore stock against the barrel and take up any looseness which might otherwise exist. The fore stock is grooved longitudinally to fit the under side of the barrel and in the bottom of this groove to the rear of the catch before described there is provided a socket 1G also adapted to receive and quite closely surround the stud or catch projection ll before mentioned,
In order to take down the gun from the assembled position shown in Fig. l the breech bolt 17 is first withdrawn more or less, more particularly to disengage the forward end of the extractor 18 from the recess 19 in the rear end of the barrel provided to receive it. The operator then withdraws the catch bolt 12 by forcing it to the rear by means of the thumb piece l5 and forces the forward end of the fore stock away from the barrel. When freed from the stud or catch projection l1 the fore stock is then moved forward disengaging the rear projecting portion 8 thereof from the socket in the is employed. When so reapplied .the parts will appear as shown inFig. 2 ofv the draw-ings. To assemble the parts or set up the gun alter removing the ore stock from the barrel in obvious manner, the operations belore described are performed in the reverse order. In Fig. lO. there is shown a modiiied form of construction wherein an interrupted thread of three sections, namely, a, b and c, is employed in lieu of the two section. thread ot'the previously described construction. y
