Description
'UNITED TATES PATENT FFIQE.
MARY; T. CONFREY, 0F INDIANAPGLIS, INDIANA.
HAT-PIN.
. Speccation of Letters atent. Patented June 20, 1911.
Application filed November 29, 1909. Serial No. 536,496.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY T. CoNrREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and if short enough to be conveniently used with the smaller head coverings the same hat pins cannot efficiently be used with the larger head coverings. Then, too, when' the points project through to a considerable extent there is an element of danger to other persons in theimmediate vicinity, who are likely to get their eyes put out or faces scratched by the projecting points. It is the object of my present invention to produce a hat objections. I Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a view of a hat pin embodying my present invention; Fig. 2 a secpin which shall avoid these tional view thereof on an enlarged scale, the
central portion'being` broken away to permit the scale desired; Fig. 3 a detail sectional View similar to a portion of Fig. 2 but on a still further enlarged scale, and showing the fastening device in unfastened position, and Fig. 4 a transverse sectional View' as seen when looking downwardly from the broken line 44 in Fig. 3.
My improved hat pin consists of three principal parts. The central or main part consists of-a pin body, a considerable portion, 15, .of which is very similar to the bodies of the pins now commonly in use. That portion, 16, however, near the head of the pin is ltubular in form, and interiorly screw-threaded.' Into this interiorly screwthreaded portion the body, `17 of the upper .l
part extends, said body being-correspondingly exteriorly screw-threaded. This last mentioned part carries an ordinary head, 18.
Upon the point of the portion 15 is a second and removable head, 19, containing a fastening device, 20, by which it may be se curely fastened t0 the point of the pin, after said pin has been inserted to operative po sition. `This second and removable head covers the otherwise sharp point of the pin, and renders it harmless. i
In operation, the hat pin is adjusted to the desired length by screwing the portion 17 into or out of the portion 16 until the desired length is obtained. This may for the mostl part be done before the pin is inserted in place, but if after it is inserted any additional adjustment is desired, that is easily done. After the pin is inserted in` place then the removable head 19 is pushed over the point, and the fastener 2O operated, which holds it firmly in place. Any desired form of fastener may be employed, but I have shown a small lever, having a cam-end which impinges upon the side of the pin near its point when turned down to the position indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. slight depression or small annular groove, 21, may be formed in the pin where the cam comes in contact therewith for purposes of additional security, as shown.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.v The combination, in a hat pin, of a body part having a tubular interiorly screwother provided with a point, said two portions being telescopically united, whereby the length of the hat pin may be varied as desired.
In witness whereof, I, have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, thijs twenty-seventh day of November, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and nine.
MARY T. CONFREY. [Ls] Witnesses:
CHESTER BRADFORD, FRANK A. FAHLE.
