SAFETY LAMP-EXTING-UISHER.
ceases.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lxns KVINDEGARD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Innisfree, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have in vented new and useful Improvements in Safety Lamp-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lamp extinguishers, and the object of the same is to provide simple and effective attachments adjacent the Wick tube of a burner that will automatically extinguish the flame and thereby avoid serious consequences in the event of the upsetting or falling over of a lamp and also to have means whereby the flame of the lamp may be readily extinguished without the necessity of the lowering of the wick or employing other methods of extinguishing the flame.
With the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progrosses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse vertical sectional view of a burner, showing the improved extinguishing attachments applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the burner in its tilted position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the extinguishing members. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the weighted extinguisher operating member.
In the agcompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates an ordinary oil lamp burner. This burner 1 is provided with the usual wick tube 2 which is arranged centrally of the said burner and which is provided with the usual openings adapted for the reception of the toothed wheels provided upon the wick raising member 3. Positioned upon each of the sides of the wick tube 2 are the extinguishing members 4:. Each of these members comprises a flattened rectangular portion and has its opposite ends bent to form V-shaped or triangular sides. Centrally connected with each of the extinguishers 4 and extending downwardly through one of the ventilating openings provided upon the top of the burner is a rod Specification of Letters Patent.

5. This rod 5 has its extremity connected with a U-shaped bail 6, the said bail being pivotally connected with the burner tube, and the arm of the said bail which is not con nected with the rod of the extinguishing member is preferably arranged at an inclination to the first named arm.
The numeral 7 designates the extinguisher operating member. This member 7 comprises a longitudinally extending substan tially U-shaped member having one of its arms 8 of a greater length than its opposite arm 9. The arms 8 and 9 are adapted to straddle one of the ends of the burner tube and to be hingedly connected therewith, and both of the said arms are adapted to underlie the offset arms of the hinged bails connected with the rod which is secured to the extinguisher caps. The longer arm of the member 7 is adapted to extend a suitable distance away from the burner, and has its extremity weighted as at 10. By this arrangement, it will be noted that if the burner is tilted in any direction the weighted portion of the extinguishing member will swing upon its hinged connection with the burner tube and contacting the offset arms of the U-shaped bails will force the rods secured to the under faces of the extinguishers to the position illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thus enveloping the flame from the wick and extinguishing the same.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple and efiective device for the purpose intended, and trated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction, within the scope of the following claim may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is The combination with a burner of the class set forth, of flame extinguishing members arranged adjacent the opposite elongated faces of the burner tube, said members having downwardly extending rods, bails hingedly connected with the tube having one of their arms connected with the rod, a weighted U-shaped member hingedly connected with one of the .edges of the tube, said U-shaped member having both of its while I have illusarms underlying one of the arms of s the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hinged bail, said U-shaped member also havin presence of two Witnesses.
ing one of its arms of a greater length than its opposite arm and the said longer arm LABS KVINDEGARD' extending beyond the burner and being pro- \Vitnesses:
