JOHN CARNOT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
RECEPTAGLE FOR CUSPIIDORS.
Application filed January 17, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CARNOT, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Receptacles for Guspidors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles for cuspidors and similar devices, and its object is to provide a box which will be normally closed to confine the odors which might arise from a cuspidor and having a hinged lid which is elevated by a rod when it is desired to secure access to the interior of the box. These and other objects and details of the invention are more fully described in the following specification, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the drawings,
wherein,
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the device. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the means for raising the lid.
The receptacle consists of a box 5 of any desired shape or size, supported on legs 6, and having a top 7 which is hinged at the rear side of the box and has the projecting edge 8. .The box is provided with a bottom 9, and has a disk 10 with a hole in same to receive the cuspidor 11 which is supported by the rim 12 at its upper end. The rear edge of the top 7 has a slot 13 covered on its top side by the perforated plate 14, and through the perforation in this plate passes a rod 15 having in its upper end the handle 16 while near its lower end and above the plate 14- is the offset- 17. The lower end 18 of the rod is turned upward and Works in a slot 19 in the rear wall of the box. Pressing upon the lower end of the rod is a spring 20 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3%), 1911.
Serial No. 603,160.
to hold the rod in its normal position, and when it is desired to raise the lid of the box, the rod 15 is pressed downward, the oiiset 17 bearing upon the plate 14 and causing the lid 7 to swing upward on its hinges 21.
As will be seen in Fig. 3 in dotted lines, after the rod is pushed downward it is then pressed inward slightly, bringing the lid to a position so that the cuspidor may be used, and upon releasing the handle the weight of the lid and the pressure of the spring 20 cause the rod to move upward allowing the box to close. The rod 15 also serves as a means for carrying the box around to various points, and it is obvious that the parts may be otherwise arranged and modified without departing from the essential fea tures above described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
A receptacle for cuspidors comprising a box, a lid horizontally mounted on the said box, a rod slidably engaging the said box and the said lid, a spring secured to the said box and engaging the said rod and an offset formed on the said rod and adapted to engage the said lid when the said rod is moved downwardly against the action of the said spring to open the said lid relatively to the said box, the said spring being adapted to normally reposition the said rod when the same is released.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN OARNOT. l/Vitnesses:
