UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH SALE, OF DUSSELDORF, GERMANY.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING SEVERAL JEWELS IN FORM OF A SETTING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnmonrorr SALE, jeweler by appointment to the court, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at 26 Achenbachstrasse, Dusseldorf, Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Devices for Holding Several ewels in Form of a Setting, of which the following is a specification.
When a customer of a jeweler is intending to purchase jewelry containing several precious stones, the jeweler is generally called upon to show these stones in various arrangements. The means hitherto employed for this purpose are very insuflicient and are not adapted to show off the arrangement of the stones to their best effect.
The present invention relates to a device for hol ing such precious stones, pearls and the like.
This device consists of a plurality of small tongs displaceably arranged in tubes hinged to each other. The jeweler can therefore hold the respective articles in such a manner, that he can give them any relative position to each other.
The device is exemplified in the accompanying drawing.
In this drawing Figures 1 and 3 are side elevations seen from two difierent sides, while Fi s. 2 and 1 are plans of the same views; ig. 5 is a longitudinal section through a single tong.
As is shown in the drawing the claws 7a of the tongs are displaceably arranged in a tube 1' and are connected to a spindle 8 under action of a spring f. The rear end of the said spindle terminates outside of the tube in form of a button 0. If now this button 0 is pressed with the finger the claws will emerge at the front of the tube and open out. After the article to be gripped has been placed between the claws, the spindle is again released, so that the said article is now securely held and the claws holding it will recedelio 1so far into the tube that they are hardly v1s1 e.
In the constructional form illustrated in the accompanying drawing the tubes 1' are adjustably arranged in special sockets h, from which they may be withdrawn. These sockets are linked together by means of suitable hinges in such a manner, that they may be moved into any desired position to each other. In the constructional form shown further sockets n are rotatably fitted on the sockets h, and through these sockets n a spindle i is passed. The sockets n can turn around the spindle i in one direction and around the sockets h in the other direction. According to the number of stones or the like to be employed for the respective piece of jewelry the number of sockets h and tongs on the the spindle i may be increased or the tongs not required may be removed or be withdrawn into the sockets h. In consequence of the tongs being hinged together and axially displaceable, the articles gri ped by them may be moved into any desire position to each other, so that they form a straight or a curved line, a circle or that one of them forms the center around which the others are grouped.
I claim:
1. A device for holding several jewels in form of a setting, consisting of a plurality of tongs axially displaceable and linked together by means of hinges, so as to allow of being moved into any relative inclined position to each other.
2. A device for holding several jewels in form of a setting consisting of a plurality of tongs axially displaceable in tubes by means of spindles each spindle under action of a spring and having a press button outside said tube, said tube withdrawably fitted in sockets, on said sockets cross-sockets rotatably fitted thereon said cross-sockets each with an eye, a spindle adapted to receive the said cross-sockets rotatable thereon with their eyes.
