'ATTACHMENT FOR THIMBLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1911.
Application led July 23, 1910. Serial No. 573,522.
To all whom it may cof/warn.'
Be it known that I, JOHN T. OHMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, -in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Thimbles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for thimbles for cutting thread and pulling needles.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a simplified form of device for this purpose which can be made out of a single blank of sheet metal, and this will consist of a single part only; and to provide a more convenient and simple construction (fif needle puller than has been done heretoore.
The invention also involves improvements in details of construction as will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a thimble with one form of the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the attachment and thimble. Fig. 3 is a view of the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. l is a plan of a blank from which the attachment can be made, and Fig. 5 is a side view of a thimble showing a modification of the attachment.
In the form of the invention shown in the first four figures, the thimble A is provided with a removable ring for clip 10 having integral hooks 11 at the edges adapted to be bent over the edge of the thimble so as to secure the attachment thereto. With this ring is integrally connected a base 12 which is turned up at right angles to form a sidepiece. The side iece has an inclined slot 14: having a slanting cutting edge 15. The side 13 also has a turned down end 16 spaced from the side 13 to form a guide for a sliding part 17 which is integral with an extension 18 projecting from the opposite side of the ring. The forward inclined edge 19 of the part 17 is a cutting edge and is adapted to come into cutting coperation with the edge 15 when the blade 17 is pushed forward. This can be accomplished by pressing down on a bow-shaped projection 20 on the extension 18. The base 12 also is provided with a turned over end 21 which has a perforation 22 just at the bend. This perforation is for the purpose of admitting a needle as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It has been found in practice that the admission of a needle from the side is somewhat inconvenient and consequently this arrangement has been provided to permit the needle to be inserted from the end. After being inserted, the end 21 is pressed down to hold the needle for the purpose of gripping it so that it can be pulled as will be understood. A needle attachment constructed in this way can be made of a single blank B of sheet metal of the form shown in Fig. f1 in which the parts 10al1- 12- 13- 15"- 1G F-17-18- 19a-- and 21L are bent up in one way or another to form the arts having the correspending numbers in igs. 1, 2 and 3. Thus it will be seen that these parts are all integral.
In the form shown in Fig. 5, the needle puller is shown as applied to an attachment C of a different character which has an inward bend 24 for gripping the needle. A perforation is provided in the center of the back bend 23 as in the other case and acts in the same way.
In both forms the hooks 11 are used to hold the attachment on while pulling the needle. At this time the action of the operator in pressing on the spring to grip the needle has the effect of holding the hooks firmly on the thimble so that the attachment will not be pulled off.
While I have illustrated and described two forms of the invention, I am aware that many other modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore,
'I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction shown and described, but
What I do claim is 1. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for thimbles, comprising a reversely bent member located near the top of the thimble and having means whereby a needle can be admitted longitudinally to be gripped by the bent member, a fixed knife blade, and a longitudinally movable knife blade adapted to coperate therewith.
2. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for thimbles comprising a base adapted to be supported along the side of the thimble and having means at the end near the top of the thimble for gripping a needle, a blade projectingY therefrom, and a movable blade adapted to coopera-te therewith.
3. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for thimbles, comprising a base adapted to be located along the side of a thimble, a piece projecting atlright-angles therefrom and having a cutting edge, and a second piece resiliently connected therewith rand having a movable cutting edge adaptf ed to coperate with the first named cutting edge.
4. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for thimbles, comprising a body adapted. to lie along the surface of a thimble having an integral member projecting ysubstantially at right-angles therefrom and 'end of said body, and a blade integrally having a slot therein at an inclination, one edge of said slot being a cutting edge, a resilient projection extending from the other mounted on said j extension and adapted to move along the surface of said member and to cooperate with the said cutting edge;
5. As an article of manufacture, an atvtachment for` thimbles, comprising a body with the said cutting edge, said member having an overlapping projection constituting a guide for said blade. x
6. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for thimbles comprising a base adapted to be supported along the side of the thimble, and having integral means at the end near the top of the thimble for gripping a needle, anintegral blade projecting therefrom, an integral movable blade adapted to coperate therewith, and a ring connected with said piece and adapted to extend part way around the thimble and provided with hooks thereon for securing it to the thimble.
7. As an article of manufacture, an at tachment for thimbles comprising a base adapted to be supported along the side of the thimble, and having means at the end near the top of the thimble for gripping aneedle, a blade projectingtherefrom, a movable blade adapted to cooperate therewith, and a ring integral with said piece and adapted to Aextend part way around the thimble and provided with hooks thereon for securing it to the thimble.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN T. OHMAN.
