Description

dirited tzdet @wat (twine.
Letters Patent No. 99,307, dated .February 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN` AIPPARATU54 FOR RAISING WATER.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part o' the same Io all w71 om 1t may concern.-
Beit known that I, J. L.- GARLINGTON, of Snapping Shoals, in the county of Newton, and vState of Georgia, have invented 'a new and improved Water- Elevating Apparatus and I do hereby declare that the following is 'a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which-will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for raising water, and consists in'the combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter' specified.
The drawing represents a sectional elevation of my improved apparatus.
A is the bucket.
,B, the cord, and
D, the pulley over which it works' in raising the bucket E, the weight, suspended on the bight of the c ord by a friction-pulley, F; Y
G, the point at which the end of the cord is fastened H, the cord for raising the weight; and
I, the drum. Y
' K, the crank-shaft, and
L, the pulley over which it works.
The Weight E is heavy enough to raise the full bucket, when suspended on the cord, as shown, and in doing iso, is required to move `only half" as far as the bucket, whereby, when the said weight is wound up, to let the bucket down, which is carried down by its weight,- only half the time is spent in winding that would be required if' the drum-cord were connected directly to the bucket.
In some cases, the crank-shaft, drum, and cord may be dispensed with, and the weight raised by taking the two parts of the bight of the cord B in the hand, and pulling it up directly.
The weight E is provided with a case, M, which is secured within the frame by studs or screws, or other suitable means, so as to be adjustable up or down, accoi-ding to the height to which it is desired or intended to raise the lbucket A, the weight being arrested in its descent by the bottom N of the case.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- '.lhe adjustable case M, in combination with the frame, and with the weight E and bucket A, as and for the purpose specified.
J. L. GARLINGTON.
