ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1911.
lhen doors are hung in new buildings and the like, after the buildinglsettles there is always a sagging in the door, either being hinge bound or rubbing in some place against the frame, or the Hoor. The same result takes place from many other causes which are needless to mentionv and the object of this invention is therefore to overcome these disadvantages. y
Another object of this invention is the production of a hinge which may be readily adjusted and which may be easily attached to the door frame.
This invention also possesses other advantages which will be more fully brought out in the following specification and claims, and it is to be understood that this invention is subject to any changes in detail construction within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a face view of the socket plate. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the socket plate showing the hinge positioned therein. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a face view of one leaf of the hinge. Fig. 5 is a Vface view of a modified form of the hinge leaf which may be used in the connection 4with this invention. Fig. 6 is a face view of a modified form of the socket plate which may be used. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view of the modified form of the device. Fig. 8 is a section taken online 8-8 of Fig. 6. f
VReferring to the drawing by numerals 1 designates the hinge socket plate which isi provided with a flange 2 extending around three sides thereof. The inner face of the plate 1 slopes toward the sides thereof thereby forming a raised central portion 3.k
The screws for holding the plate upon the support pass through the apertures 4 formed along the raised portion 3 and these screwsy 5 also pass through the alined apertures 6 formed in the hinge 7 adapted to fit in the a plurality of sockets 12 formed therein to allow a greater movement of the screws 10 wit-hin the plate 1.
Referring to the modified form as disv closed in Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8, 1al designates the socket plate which is provided with a flange 2a extending around three sides thereof similar to the structure disclosed in Fig.-
1. `The inner face of the plate also slopes toward the sides of the same thereby forming a raised portion of the same structure as disclosed in Fig. 1. The plate as shown in Fig. 6" is provided witha cut-out portion 13 which is adapted to receive the raised portion 14 formed upon the hinge leaf 15 as hereinafter described. The screws for holding the hinge and plate in place pass throughthe holes 16 formed in the hinge leaf 15 and the holes 17 formed in the plate 1, The plate 1a is provided at each end withk a centrally arranged longitudinally extending aperture 18 which aperture eX- tends from the outer edge ofthe plate to thev aperture V13. The hinge leaf 15 which is adapted to be used with the plate 18L is provided Yas previously mentioned with a raised wedge like portion 14 which portion is provided with apertures 19 adapted to register with aperture 18 formed in the plate 1a. A notch 20 is formed upon the outer face of the hinge 15 for facilitating the placing of the journal pin 21 in place which secures the hinge leaf 15 and theplate 1a together-. The hinge leaf 15 is placed upon the plate 1al in the manner as shown in Fig. 7 and it will therefore be seen that the wedge-shaped portion 14 flts in the cut-out portion 13 and that the upper and lower edges of the portion 1 rests upon and engages the respective edges of the cut-out portion 13. The hinge leaf is adjusted in the same manner as shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inelusive.
.It will be obvious that by adjusting the screws l0 of the hinge that the door can be adjusted so as to overcome any sagging thereof and that by tightening one of the screws 10 and loosening the other, the transverse angle of the hinge may be changed.
What we claim is l. In a device of the class described the combination with a hinge leaf, a socket plate provided with a flange extending around three sides thereof, the inner face of said plate slanting from the center to the sides thereof, and means passing through said hinge leaf and plate for regulating the transverse angle of said hinge leaf upon said late. p 2. In a device of the class described the combination of a hinge-leaf provided with an enlarged portion substantially wedgeshaped in cross section, a socket plate provided with a cut-out portion adapted to receive said enlarged portion of said hingeleaf, a longitudinally7 extending rib forined upon said plate said plate provided with centrally arranged longitudinally extending apertures, said enlarged portion provided with a centrally arranged longitudinally extending aperture, a pin passing through said apertures and pivotally connecting said hinge leaf with said plate, and screws passing through said plate and hinge for changing the pitch of said hinge upon said plate.
3. In a device of the class described the combination of a hinge leaf provided with a wedge-shaped enlarged portion upon one face thereof, a socket plate tapering from the center to the sides thereof, thereby forming a. centrally longitudinally extending rib, said plate provided with a cut-out portion said plate provided with apertures extending from the ends thereof to the cut-out portion, said leaf provided with an aperture extending through said enlarged portion and a cut-out portion formed upon the opposite face of the leaf to the enlarged portion, a pin passing through said apertures for securing the hinge leaf to said plate, and screws passing through said hinge leaf and engaging said plate for regulating the leaf upon said plate.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
