Description
Title: a hinge, an assembly comprising the hinge and a method of adjusting a position of a movable barrier relative to a frame using the hinge. Description According to a first aspect the present disclosure relates to a hinge for pivotably connecting a movable barrier such as a window or a door to a frame such as a window frame or a door frame.
According to a second aspect the present disclosure relates to an assembly of said hinge, a frame such as a window frame or a door frame and a movable barrier such as a window or a door.
According to a third aspect the present disclosure relates to a method of adjusting a position of a movable barrier such as a door or a window relative to a frame such as a window frame or a door frame using said hinge.
With the use of conventional hinges for pivotably connecting a window or a door to a respective window frame or a door frame, the position of the respective door or window cannot be adjusted once mounted in its final position, for example when the gap between the door or window and the frame appears to be uneven after installation, or when the door or window does not close properly. In order to fix these deficiencies, the hinge has to be removed, adapted and reinstalled and/or the respective door or window has to be manipulated, which is an unpleasant, time consuming and laborious task. Because of the inflexibility of conventional hinges, installing and/or correctly adjusting a door or a window requires accurate craftsmanship.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present disclosure to provide a hinge with improved capability for adjusting the position of a movable barrier.
In the first aspect, this is achieved by a hinge for pivotably connecting a movable barrier such as a window or a door to a frame such as a window frame or a door frame, said hinge comprising:
- an adjustment part arranged for being fixated, in use, to one of said movable barrier and said frame, wherein said adjustment part comprises a supporting surface; - a first hinge part arranged for being fixated, in use, to said one of said movable barrier and said frame via said supporting surface; - a second hinge part arranged for being fixated, in use, to said other of said movable barrier and said frame; - a coupling element pivotably coupling said first hinge part to said second hinge part about a pivot axis; - an adjustment element connected to said adjustment part and said first hinge part for adjusting an orientation of said first hinge part relative to said adjustment part for positioning said movable barrier relative to said frame.
It was the insight of the inventor, that by connecting the adjustment part to one of the two hinge parts, the orientation of the hinge part relative to the adjustment part can easily be adjusted. This allows simple and extremely accurate positioning of the movable barrier relative to the frame, even after fixation of the movable barrier to frame, obviating the need of removing and/or reinstallation of the hinge and/or adaptation of the movable barrier and/or frame. Use of the hinge according to the present disclosure, simplifies installation of the movable barrier to the frame, as this requires less strict demands and accuracy in installing the hinge.
The hinge, more in particular the adjustment element, according to the present disclosure is preferably arranged for adjusting the movable barrier relative to the clear opening or clearance of the frame. The clear opening or clearance of a frame is defined as the inner surface of the frame enclosing an opening. In Dutch this is defined by “de dag” or “de dagmaat”.
Preferably, by adjusting an orientation of the first hinge part relative to the adjustment part, the position of the door relative to the frame is accurately adjustable in continues steps up to several millimeters, more preferably up to several centimeters.
Preferably, the separate elements of the hinge are manufactured of a solid material, like steel, stainless steel, aluminium or any other metal, an alloy, or combinations thereof. More preferably, the separate elements of the hinge are manufactured from the same material, for efficient, cost efficient production and for minimalizing waste materials.
Preferably, the hinge according to the present disclosure is arranged for manufacturing in different dimensions, such that the hinge is suitable for outside doors and/or windows in offices and homes.
Preferably, the movable barrier comprises two or more hinges according to the present disclosure, dependent of the size and/or weight of the movable barrier. For example, one or more hinges can be provided in an upper part and a lower part of the movable barriers. This allows for separate and accurate positioning of the upper part of the movable barrier relative to the frame and/or the lower part of the movable barrier relative to the frame.
Optionally, the hinge can be installed without the adjustment part installed to one of the movable barrier and the frame, for example when there is no need for adjusting the movable barrier relative to the frame at the moment of installation.
Preferably, through holes and/or dimensions of the hinge, in particular the first hinge part, are positioned and/or sized in accordance with conventional hinges. This is advantageous, because this allows retrofitting and simple and easy replacement of conventional hinges by the hinge according to the present disclosure.
Preferably, the one of the movable barrier and the frame is provided with a recess arranged for receiving the adjustment part. The recess can be produced manually or automatically, for example by a conventional CNC machine.
Preferably, said adjustment part comprises first through holes each arranged for receiving a fixating element such as a screw for fixating said adjustment part to said one of said movable barrier and said frame. This ensures easy installation and firm fixation of the adjustment part, preferably by screws generally available.
Preferably, the first through holes coincide with through holes present in the first hinge part, such that each first through hole and corresponding through hole in the first hinge part are arranged for receiving a single fixating element such as a screw for simultaneously fixating the adjustment part and the first hinge part to the one of the movable barrier and frame.
Preferably, said adjustment part comprises a threaded hole and wherein said adjustment element is provided with a screw thread cooperating with said threaded hole for said adjusting.
This ensures a beneficial and easy operation of the adjustment element for adjusting the orientation of the first hinge part relative to the adjustment part, by transferring a rotational movement to the adjustment element. Clockwise and/or counter-clockwise rotation of the adjustment element, enables orientation of the first part relative to the adjustment such that the movable barrier is positioned away from the frame orientation, or enables orientation of the first part relative to the adjustment such that the movable barrier is positioned towards the frame.
Preferably, the adjustment element is provided with a recess or a protrusion arranged for receiving a tool, for adjusting the adjusting element. More preferably, the adjustment element is provided with a cross or hexagonal shaped recess at its free short side facing the adjustment part, arranged for receiving a tool generally available, like a screwdriver or a hex key.
Preferably, said supporting surface comprises a first surface area and a second surface area connected via a tilt line, wherein said first surface area and said second surface area enclose an obtuse angle.
Preferably, at least one of said first surface area and said second surface area is flat, preferably, wherein both said first surface area and said second surface area are flat. This enables a simple, solid and easy to manufacture adjustment part. The orientation of the first hinge part relative to the adjustment part is adjusted by tilting the first hinge part over the tilt line of the adjustment part by means of the adjusting element. On the one side, the orientation of the first hinge part relative to the adjustment part is bounded to a first orientation by the first surface area of the 5 adjustment part, with the adjustment element in its first position. On the other side, the orientation of the first hinge part relative to the adjustment part is bounded by a second orientation by the second surface area of the adjustment part, with the adjustment element in its second position. The orientation of the first hinge part relative to the adjustment part can be adjusted by means of the adjustment element to any orientation between the first orientation and the second orientation.
In an embodiment, said first surface area and said second surface area are convex curved in a plane perpendicular to the tilt line. This is beneficial for realizing a relative accurate adjustment.
Preferably, said first through holes and said threaded hole are provided in either said first surface area or said second surface area.
Preferably, said adjustment part comprises second through holes provided on said tilt line each arranged for receiving a further fixating element such as a further screw for fixating said adjustment part to said one of said movable barrier and said frame and for fixating said first hinge part to said first hinge part (9), preferably for fixating said adjustment part (5) to one of said movable barrier and said frame, preferably, wherein a respective center line of each of said second through holes intersects said tilt line, preferably wherein a respective center line of each of said second through holes coincides with said tilt line.
The second through holes coincide with through holes present in the first hinge part, such that each second through hole and corresponding through hole in the first hinge part are arranged for receiving a single further fixating element such as a screw for simultaneously fixating the adjustment part and the first hinge part to the one of the movable barrier and frame. After final adjustment of the orientation of the first hinge part relative to the adjustment part, the first hinge part and the adjustment part are fixed to the one of the movable barrier and the frame, enabling strong and final fixation of the hinge, in particular of the first hinge part, to one of the movable barrier and the frame.
Preferably, said first hinge part comprises a thickened section arranged for increasing a stiffness of said first hinge part, preferably wherein said thickened section extends in a direction of said pivot axis.
In an embodiment, said first hinge part comprises an embossing for increasing a stiffness of said first hinge part, preferably wherein said thickened section extends in a direction of said pivot axis.
The thickened section or embossing prevents bending of the first hinge part during adjusting of the orientation of the first hinge part relative to the adjustment part and/or fixation of the first hinge part to the one of the movable barrier and the frame.
Preferably, said first hinge part comprises a through hole for allowing access to said adjustment element for said adjusting. This allows easy access for reception and operation of the adjustment element by a tool, for example a screwdriver or a hex key, in order to adjust the adjusting element. This is beneficial for allowing a relative practical adjustment of the movable barrier relative to the frame after attachment of the movable barrier to the frame.
Preferably, said hinge is according to NEN 5089:2019. This allows for ahinge according to the present disclosure, wherein the hinge meets the requirements of NEN 5089:2019 and is tested according to NEN 5089:2019. For example, the hinge is provided with SKG-stars indicating the burglar resistance class accordingly. This is in particular relevant for hinges provided in outdoor doors and/or windows. It was the insight of the inventor, that the design of the hinge according to the present disclosure does not negatively affect anti burglar resistance of the hinge, like for example the existence of a conventional anti thief claw.
In the second aspect, the objective of the present disclosure is achieved by an assembly of a hinge according to the first aspect of the present disclosure, a frame such as a window frame or a door frame and a movable barrier such as a window or a door, wherein one of said movable barrier and said frame comprises a first recess for receiving said adjustment part and a second recess for receiving said first hinge part, wherein said adjustment part is received in said first recess and said first hinge part is received in said second recess and fixated to said one of said movable barrier and said frame via said adjustment part.

Effects the hinge according to the first aspect of the present disclosure as presented above correspond to or are similar to effects of the assembly according to the second aspect of the present disclosure.
Preferably, said first hinge part is pressed against said tilt line and either said first surface area or said second surface area. Preferably, said first hinge part is pressed only against said tilt line. Preferably, said first hinge part is pressed only against said tilt line and said adjustment element. This is beneficial for realizing any orientation between the first orientation and the second orientation.
Preferably, said orientation of said first hinge part relative to said adjustment part is fixated by said adjustment element, said fixating elements and said further fixating elements.
In the third aspect, the objective of the present disclosure is achieved by a method of adjusting a position of a movable barrier such as a door or a window relative to a frame such as a window frame or a door frame using a hinge according to the first aspect of the present disclosure, said method comprising the steps of: - connecting said first hinge part, via said adjustment part, to said on of said movable barrier and said frame; - adjusting, by said adjustment element, said orientation of said first hinge part relative to said adjustment part and said one of said movable barrier and said frame; and - fixating said adjustment part to said one of said movable barrier and said frame.
Preferably, during said step of connecting, said first hinge part is connected, by said fixating element, to said one of said movable barrier and said frame.
Preferably, said step of connecting is performed before said step of adjusting.
Preferably, during said step of adjusting, said adjustment element is operated via said through hole of said first hinge part.
Preferably, during said step of adjusting, said adjustment element is operated until said one of said movable barrier and said frame is in a predetermined position relative to said other of said movable barrier and said frame.
Preferably, said step of fixating further comprises fixating said orientation of said first hinge part relative to said adjustment part by said adjustment element, said fixating elements and said further fixating elements.

Fig. 9 to 11 disclose several orientations of the first hinge part 9 relative to the adjustment part 5, in which the adjustment part 5 and the first hinge part 9 are fixated to the door frame 3 by means of fixating screws 37 and further fixating screws 27.
In the orientation as shown in Fig. 9, the adjustment element 15 does not protrude from threaded hole 29, thereby realizing that the supporting surface 7 of the adjustment part 5 is connected to the first hinge part 9, such that the first surface area 17 of the adjustment part 5 coincides with a receiving surface area of the first hinge part 9. In this orientation, the distance between the door and the door frame 3 is for example 0.5 mm.
In the orientation as shown in Fig. 10, the adjustment element 15 partly protrudes threaded hole 29, thereby realizing that the supporting surface 7 of the adjustment part 5 is connected to the first hinge part 9 only along the tilt line 21 and via the adjustment element 15. In this orientation, the distance between the door and the door frame 3 is for example 2.0 mm.
In the orientation as shown in Fig. 11, the adjustment element 15 maximally protrudes threaded hole 29, thereby realizing that the supporting surface 7 of the adjustment part 5 is connected to the first hinge part 9, such that the second surface area 19 of the adjustment part 5 coincides with the receiving surface area the first hinge part 9 and thereby maximizing the angle a between the receiving surface area plane of the first hinge part 9 and the plane perpendicular to the door frame 3. In this orientation, the distance between the door and the door frame 3 is for example 60mm.
By adjusting the adjustment element 15 with tool 28, the distance between the door and the door frame 3 can be adapted from a minimum value as disclosed in Fig. 9, to a maximum value as disclosed in Fig. 11, and any value in between.
The method 201 comprises a first step of connecting 203 the first hinge part 9, via the adjustment part 5, by the further fixating element 27 and fixating elements 37, to the frame 3. After the step of connecting 203, in a second step of adjusting 205, the orientation of the first hinge part 9 is adjusted, by the adjustment element 15, relative to the adjustment part 5 and the frame 3. The adjustment element 15 is operated via through hole 33 of the first hinge part 9, until the frame 3 is in a predetermined position relative to the door. In a subsequent step of fixating 207, the adjustment part 5 is fixated to the frame 3, by fixating the orientation of the first hinge part 9 relative to the adjustment part 5 by the adjustment element 15, the fixating elements 37 and the further fixating elements 27.
It is noticed that the above description of the figures describe one variation of many embodiments of the present disclosure. In particular, the variation of a hinge for pivotably connecting a door to a door frame is described.
It is obvious, other variations like a hinge for pivotably connecting a window to a window frame, or more general a hinge for pivotably connecting a movable barrier to a frame can be descripted mutatis mutandis.
It may furthermore be obvious, that the adjustment part can be applied mutatis mutandis to the movable barrier instead of to the frame as described in the above figures.
Other variations to the disclosed embodiments can be understood and effected by those skilled in the art in practicing the claimed invention, from a study of the drawings, the disclosure, and the appended claims.
In the claims, the word “comprising” does not exclude other elements or steps, and the indefinite article, “a” or “an” does not exclude a plurality.
The mere fact that certain measures are recited in mutually different dependent claims does not indicate that a combination of these measures cannot be used to advantage.
