CONVERTIBLE TRUNK AND BED.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that we, KATHERINE J. STUMP STUMP, citizens of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Con- Vertible Trunks and Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprises an improved convertible'trunk and bed, and its primary object is to provide a portable article of the above class of exceedingly simple construction, and which may be readily transformed from a trunk into a bed, or vice versa.

In carrying out the invention, an especial object is to obtain a construction possessing a maximum degree of rigidity, and yet comparatively light to avoid undue weight when the invention is used as a trunk.

The invention is especially advantageous for use for traveling purposes, by campers, and for general service where a trunk or quickly foldable bed would be advantageous.

For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention with the parts as arranged as when used as a bed, the canopy being thrown open to disclose the interior construction; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of the invention showing the canopy operatively arranged to extend entirely over the bed; Fig. 3 is a top plan view, partly broken away, and shown in section, the parts of the invention being adjusted to form a trunk; Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of the device as shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken about on the line 55 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the canopy, which may be used in connection with the invention; Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail view showing one of the hasp plates carried by the sides and bottom of the trunk; Fig. 8 is a detail view of one of the locking rods; Fig. 9 is a detail perspective View of one of the foot pieces; Fig. 10, is a fragmentary view of an end of one of the slats of the spring; and Fig. .11 is a sectional view of'a portion of the spring.

Throughout the following description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.

In the preferred embodiment of the invenjusted, as shown in Fig. 1, the sides 1 and bottom 2 constitute the body of a bed, the cover 4: affording the head piece, and the ends 3 providing side members convenient for use with the head 4 to support a canopy 5 should it be wished to employ the latter, as desirable when the invention is used as a bed out of doors.

When used as a trunk, the parts of the invention are held in their closed or folded condition by means of hasp plates 6 attached to the sides 1, and having slots to receive staples 7 on the inner sides of the ends 3. Locking rods 8 are adapted to pass through the staples 7 and outer sides of the plates 6 whereby to prevent disengagement of said plates from the staples. Said looking rods have lateral extensions 8 at their upper ends to overlap the upper edges of the ends 3 of'the trunk, to limit the downward movement of said rods, and afi'ord convenient finger pieces for ready attachment and detachment of the latter. Hook rods 9 are preferably employed to connect the cover 1 with the ends 3 when the trunk is unfolded to provide a bed, as shown in Fig. 1, said hook rods being pivoted to the cover 4:, and their hooks being adapted to engage certain of the staples 7 on ends 8.

A spring or cushion is rovided for the bed when in use, and pre erably comprises yieldable side and bottom members 10 applied to the sides 1, and bottom. 2 of the trunk. The members 10 preferably consist of slats supported on coiled springs 11 and connected in a flexible manner by means of wires 12. The partslO take up very little room, and if desired, a mattress or auxiliary cushion 13 may be placed thereon, as shown in Fig. 2, though the yieldability of the parts 10 permits of ready use thereof without the mattress or cushion 13, by placing the bed directly upon said slats 10.

Transverse cleats 14: may be applied to the ends 3 to support a tray 15, when the invention is used as a trunk, said tray to contain any suitable articles. Even with the use of the tray 15, ample room will be left when the trunk is folded ready for use to permit of placing bedding, etc., in said trunk.

The canopy 5 is somewhat peculiar in that it is secured at one end, as shown at 5, to the outer edge of one of the sides 1, and said canopy may be provided at its edges with openings to fit over buttons or similar fastenings applied to the upper edges of the ends 3 and cover 4:.

The canopy will be made preferably as shown in Fig. 6, with suitable extensions to extend downwardly on opposite sides of the ends 3, in the manner shown in Fig. 2. When the invention is used as a trunk, the

canopy 5 will be folded to provide a lining for the trunk, extending over the yielding members 10, as illustrated clearly in Figs. 4 and 5.

Supporting legs 16 are provided on the ends 3 and other supporting legs 17 are provided on the sides 1. The legs 16 are preferably rigid with an edge panel 16 at the lower edge of each end 3, said panel 16 being hinged to the end 3 and adapted to fold downwardly to carry the legs 16 in vertical positions, to support the invention when used as a bed. The legs 16, when folded upwardly against the ends 3 form crossed panels coacting with the panel 16 and permanent panel 16 to afford paneling for the ends 3, and at the same time bracing said ends.

The legs 16 have foot pieces 19 which are really spring members adapted to engage over the upper edges of the ends 8 to hold the legs against the outer sides of the ends. The upper edges of the ends may be rabbeted, or recessed, as at 19 to receive the foot pieces 19, in an obvious manner.

The legs 17 are carried rigid with a hinged edge panel or strip 20, one of which is pivoted to the outer longitudinal edge portion of each side. The legs 17 are adapted to fold against the outer surfaces of the sides 1 and at their lower portions, said legs are provided with catches 21 adapted to pass through openings near the hinges 22, by which the sides 1 are connected with the bottom 2. The catches 21 detachably connect the legs 17 with the parts 1 when the parts of the invention are folded to provide a trunk, and also afiords a bracing function as above mentioned.

When the device is folded to form a trunk, should it be desired to provide a bed, the cover 1 is unlocked and raised, and the rods 8 are removed from the staples 7, permitting the hasp plates 6 on the sides 1 to be disengaged from said staples, and the sides moved downwardly into alinement with the bottom. The hook rods 9 are then connected with the ends 3 to support the cover 4 as a head piece, after which the foot piece 19 and catches 21 may be readily manipulated to disengage the same from the parts 3 and 1 respectively. The legs 16 and 17 are then placed in vertical positions to support the bed comprised by the sides 1 and bottom 2. The tray 15 is displaced in using the invention as a bed, and it is to be understood that the trunk above described may be made in various sizes as found most desirable under practical conditions of service.

In reference to the cushion formed by the slats or members 10, to facilitate folding of the same when the invention is used as a trunk, certain of the slats designated 10 arranged above the sides 1, when the invention is used as a bed, will be loosely mounted so that they may be turned into positions shown in Fig. 5, to rest on the slats 10 of the bottom 2. WVhen the cushion is arranged as shown in Fig. 1, the slats 10 will be detachably connected by fastenings 10 with adjacent slats 10 of the sides 1. The detachable connection 10 is necessary in order to permit of folding of the cushion or spring part of the bed when the invention is converted from a bed to a trunk.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In a convertible trunk and bed, the combination of a bottom, sides and ends, edge panels carried by the sides and ends and pivotally connected therewith, crossed panels carried by the edge panels aforesaid and constituting legs movable into operative positions to support the article when the parts are adjusted to form a bed, and footpieces comprising spring members to en gage over the sides and ends and hold the panels or legs against the same when the article is folded to form a trunk.
