To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. SPIVEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Georgetown, in the county of Georgetown, State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blackboards; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to black-boards and more particularly to the class of adjustable black-boards.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a black-board which is so arranged that it is capable of being raised or lowered to predetermined points so as to suit the user whether it be a child or adult, and which board when adjusted may be securely clamped to hold the same in such position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a black-board of this character which is easy of manipulation, capable of proper adjustment, simple in construction and one that is inexpensive in the manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred form of embodiment of the invention, to enable those skilled in the art to practice the same, and as set forth in the claim hereunto appended. However, it is to be understood that minor changes, variations and modifications may be made, such as come properly within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

* Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several or uprights which extend from the floor or any other suitable support upward for a desired distance. These guide standards or uprights are united near their lower ends by a cross connecting piece 9, which may be secured thereto in any suitable manner. The inner edges of the guide uprights or standards 8, are provided throughout a greater portion of their length with guide grooves 10, in which is slidably fitted a black-board 11, which latter may be of any desirable construction and size. Secured to the rear faces of the guide standards or uprights 8, at a central point intermediate the ends thereof, is a cross plate or piece 12, the latter containing an elongated opening 18, in which is journaled a rotatable shaft 14, its opposite ends thereof having their bearings in the end walls of the said opening 13, and is adapted to rotate in the said opening.
Secured to the rotatable shaft 14, is one end of a strip or band 15, which latter is adapted to be wound on and unwound from the shaft 14, and has its opposite end fixed to the lowermost portion of a black-board 11, at its rear face by means of a fastener 16. Surrounding the shaft 14, on opposite sides of the band 15, are coiled winding springs 17, each having one end fixed to the shaft and its opposite end fixed to the cross piece 12, and these springs serve to automatically raise the black-board when released by the locking means as will be hereinafter described.
WVithin one of the guide standards 8, is mounted a locking device comprising an eccentrically mounted cam disk 18, which latter is movable into and out of the guide grooves 10, of the standard to engage and disengage the black-board for looking or unlocking the same at the will of an operator. This cam disk 18, is eccentrically fixed to a stem 19, projecting exteriorly of the standard 8 and terminating in a hand turning crank 20, so that the said disk may be thrown into locked or unlocked position when desired.
It is clearly obvious that upon releasing the locking device the black-board 11, will automatically raise and when assuming the desired. elevation an operator may then actuate the locking device to clamp the blackboard in its adjusted position to suit the convenience of the user.
Mounted upon the blackboard 11, 1s a chalk and eraser rack 21, which may be of any preferable style now in use.
The blackboard is mounted spaced from a wall by means of suitable brackets and if found desirable it may be supported in any other suitable manner.
'What is claimed is A black-board of the class described comprising spaced parallel guide standards, a cross piece uniting the same near their lower ends, a black-board slidably mounted in the guide standards, a cross piece connected to the rear faces of the standards centrally between the ends thereof and having an elongated opening, a rotatable shaft mounted in said opening, a band having one end fixed to said shaft and its opposite end fixed to the black-board near the lower end of the latter, springs acting upon said shaft to cause automatic winding of the band upon 20 THOMAS R.
