To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. HnIsER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Latrobe, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Looks for Can-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looks for closures of milk cans or the like, the object of the invention being to provide means whereby when the closure is in its closed position on the can it will be securely held thereto to protect the can against any possible fraudulent displacement of its original contents and the substitution therefor of an inferior grade of milk.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the can showing the closure secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the closure. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the can showing the closure removed. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the neck of the can and through the closure. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the closure showing the same inverted.
The can 1 is of the usual well known construction with the exception of the neck 2 which, as herein shown, is provided interiorly with a pair of oppositely disposed eye members 3.
The closure 1 is provided with a depending flange 5 which is formed with oppositely disposed slots 6 through which the eye members 3 extend when the closure is fitted to the neck of the can. Eye members 7 are secured to the flange 5 of the closure, a pair of such eye members being provided for each slot, and as shown, they are arranged immediately at the sides of the slot so as to aline with the eye members 3 in the neck of the can. The closure is provided with a depending sleeve 8 in which the stem 9 of the keeper 10 is revolubly mounted. The keeper extends transversely of the closure and its end portions are curved in opposite directions to provide locking elements 11 which are adapted to be extended through the alining eye members 3 and 7 respectively, so as to hold the closure against removal. The looking members 11 are slidable on inwardly extending supports 12 on the flange 5 of the closure. Each support is provided at one end with a stop 13 which is located directly in the path of movement of the keeper 10 so as to hold the same against movement past a predetermined point.
The stem 9 extends upwardly through the top of the closure and it is formed to provide a manipulating arm 14 which is perforated at its outer end, as at 15. A perforated member 16 extends upwardly from the top of the closure and its, perforation is arranged in coincidence with the perforation 15 when the keeper 10 is in its locked position. After the perforations are in coincidence with each other a seal such as the one illustrated at 17 is extended through the perforations so as to hold the manipulating arm 14 against movement.
The construction described herein is directed particularly to shipping cans or like vessels where it is essential to prevent removal of the contents of the can and to also prevent any possible fraudulent tampering with the contents during shipment.
I claim:
1. A can having a removable closure, a movable locking element carried by the closure, means interiorly of the can for engagement with the locking element to hold the closure against movement, a manipulating arm located exteriorly of the closure, and a member on the closure engagin the arm to limit the adjustment of the locking element and designed to receive a fastening device for holding the arm against movement.
