To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. Bncnn'i'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Belleville, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Book-Cover, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to certain improvements in removable covers for books, magazines or the like, and relates more particularly to the means for supporting and securing the book or magazine within the cover.

4The main object of my invention is to simplify the construction, so that the cover may be very inexpensively manufactured, but will prove substantial and Aefficient in use.

The book or magazine is inserted within a rigid channel-shaped back which serves to protect the binding of the magazine or book, and the latter is held within the groove of this channel by a bar so mounted that it cannot accidentally become loosened, but may be very readily loosened when desired to remove the book.

Reference is to be had to the accompanyg ing drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cover constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the back thereof; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

In my improved construction, I employ a back member 10, preferably formed of hard wood and grooved upon one side so as to form the member substantially channelshaped. The member presents two substantially parallel side flanges 11, 11, between which is formed the groove, and the side 12` of the member opposite the groove is preferably curved so as to eliminate sharp edges and give the device a rounded and finished appearance. At one end of this member I employ a transverse rod or pin 13, which has its opposite ends supported in the two flanges 11, 11, adjacent the free edges of the latter. This pin is permanently secured in place and serves a double function, in that it constitutes a pivot for retaining bars 14 and it also constitutes a stop to limit the endwise movement of the book, magazine or the like, inserted within the groove of the back member 10.

Any number' of retaining bars 14 may be employed, as desired, dependent upon the number of books or other publications which it is desired to secure within the cover. If the cover be made for a single book or magazine, then only a single retaining bar 14 need be employed. As illustrated, the cover is designed to receive two magazines, and, therefore, two retaining bars are pivotally secured to the transverse rod or pin 13. The retaining bars are each in the form of strips of spring metal, and each is of a length substantially equal to the length of the cover. At the end of the cover opposite to the cross rod 13, I employ a holder or catch for each retaining bar. As illustrated, each catch or holder includes a piece of spring metal 16, secured tothe end of the back member 11 and extending outwardly opposite the end of the groove or channel in the latter. This catch has an inwardly-directed portion 17, constituting a shoulder, and a terminal portion 18, by means of which the catch may be pulled outwardly. For giving the spring member 16 greater strength and resiliency, an additional spring 19 may be secured in place by the same nail or screw 20 which holds the catch in place, and this latter spring Vmay terminate between the shoulder 17 and the support for the catch.

In securing the book or magazine in position within the cover, the spring catch 16 is pulled outwardly and the bar 14 is swung through an angle of ninety degrees or thereabout. The back of the magazine or book is inserted within the groove and the bar 14 is then swung back between two adjacent leaves of the book or magazine, and the catch 16 is pulled outwardly, so that the bar may swing in to the position indicated in Fig. 3. The releasing of the catch 16 brings the shoulder adjacent the outer edge of the bar 14, so that the latter is effectively retained in position.

The back member 10 may be covered with a layer of cloth or any other similar material, so as to give it a more attractive appearance, and the two flanges 11 have side leaves or covers proper 21 hinged thereto. As illustrated, the same cloth which covers the outer surface of the member 10 extends over the outer surface of the cover leaves 21 and also constitutes a hinge about which the cover leaves 21 may be turned.

Yfor engaging with the free end of the bar for retaining the latter in position, a reinforcing spring ladjacent the outer side of said spring catch, cover leaves, and a cloth cover for the outer surface of said cover leaves and the outer surface of said back member and constituting hinges for securing said cover leaves to the free edges of said flanges. A cover for books, magazines or the like, comprising a back formed of a substan-` tially channel-shaped bar of wood, a rod eX- tending transversely through the sides of said channel adjacent one end thereof, a flat thin retaining bar pivotally secured to said rod, a spring catch secured to said back upon the opposite end thereof and extending outwardrly between said iianges and presenting a shoulder for engaging with the free end of the bar for retaining the latter in position, and a terminal portion constituting a finger hold, bent at an angle to the shoulder portion, a reinforcing spring adjacent the outer side of said spring catch, cover leaves, and a cloth cover for the Xouter surface of said cover leaves and the outer surface of said back member and constituting hinges for securing said cover leaves to the free edges of said flanges.
