ROUND-TOP EXTENSION-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 9, 1911.
Application filed April 9, 1906. Serial No. 310,827.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. MUNZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Round-Top Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of means employed for extending the table top, and for storing the extension leaves when the table is contracted, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through the table; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View thereof.
A is the stationary table top and B a central supporting pedestal therefor.
C is a depending rail extending around the table adjacent to the edge thereof. This rail is formed of several sections, part of which are fixed to the table top, while the remainder are movable.
As shown, two diametrically-opposite sections at b of the rail are fixed to the top, and two opposite sections 0 cl are adjustable. These adjustable sections are secured to drawslides engaging stationary slides fixed to the table top and are thus capable of being drawn out to form a support for the 'extension leaves.
As shown, the adjustable sections 0 d are connected at opposite ends with draw-slides D adjacent to the fixed slides E, the latter extending across the table top between the ends of the stationary sections a. b of the depending rail. The space in between the slides D forms a storage receptacle in which the extension leaves G may be deposited, there being, as shown, six of said leaves, which are stored in piles of three on opposite sides of the center of the table.
In operation, when the table is contracted and the leaves stored, they will be completely concealed by the depending rail 0, the stationary and movable sections of which join each other, so as to give a finished ap pearance to the table. When the table is to be extended, the sliding sections 0 (Z are drawn, which permits of lifting out the stored leaves and placing them about the edge of the stationary top. These leaves are preferably formed with a tongue and groove engagement both with the edge of the stationary top and at adjoining ends of the leaves, so that they will mutually support each other. Two of the leaves are arranged to overlap each of the drawn sections of the rail and rest thereon and upon the drawslides D. The remaining two leaves are supported by the tongue and groove engagement with the table top and with the ends of the supported leaves, and are preferably further supported by a radially-extending arm F which engages bearings underneath the stationary table top. The arms F may be secured in any suitable manner but, as shown, are radially adjustably secured in bearings on the under side of the table top.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with a round stationary table top, of a series of leaves for entirely surrounding and enlarging the perimeter thereof, a depending annular rail adjacent to the edge of said top having a removable section of sufficient length to permit the passage of leaves beneath said stationary top, and a draw slide to which said removable section is attached forming a carrier for supporting the leaves, and a support for a portion of the removable leaves in their extended position.
2. The combination with a round stationary imperforate table top, of a depending annular rail adjacent to the edge of said top, a series of leaves for surrounding said top and extending the diameter thereof, leaf-carriers having sections of said depending rail secured thereto, movable outward beyond the edge of the stationary top upon opposite sides thereof, said carriers together being adapted to receive all of the said leaves and carry the same beneath the stationary top, and in their outer positions forming a support flush with the under side of the table top for a portion of said leaves when in the plane of said top, and auxiliary supports for said leaves unsupported by the carriers.
3. The combination with a round stationary imperforate table top, of a series of leaves for surrounding said top and extending the diameter thereof, of leaf-carriers arm for a leaf unsupported by said carrier upon Which said leaves are supported beadjustably secured to the stationary top. 10 neath said stationary top, adapted to be In testimony whereof I afliX my signature drawn outward beyond the edge of the top in presence of tWo Witnesses.
upon opposite sides of the table, said carriers CHARLES WV. MUNZ.
also forming supports for a portion of the Witnesses:

top, and a radially-extending supporting AMELIA VVILLIAMs.
