Be it known that I, AnoLPH R. BLOM- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kittery, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention has relation to tables of the variety adapted to be lengthened or shortened to meet varying requirements of use, the purpose being to provide an extension table having a number ofsupports for sustaining the extension sections when drawn outward, said. supports being foldable and automatic in operation so as to occupy an operative position and prevent overbalancing of the table.

A further purpose of the invention is the provision of an extension table in which the leaves form part of the table so as always to be conveniently at hand when required for use, said leaves being mounted in a novel manner to admit of one extending over the other when the table is reduced to the smallest size.

The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a View of an extension table as seen from the lower side, one-half of the table being extended. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 'y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sect-ion on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail section on the line 111-111 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the sections of the table top. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the frame, cross piece and block.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.

The table comprises a rectangular frame 1, legs 2 and a cross brace 3. In order to admit of the table being reduced to a compact form for storing and transporting the legs 2 are detachably connected with the frame 1 and the cross brace 3 is detachably connected with the legs. is secured at its ends to opposite rails or members of the frame 1. Blocks 6 are secured to the side rails of the frame opposite the ends of the cross piece 5 and have semicircular recesses 7 formed in their inner ends and opening through the upper sides, said recesses being designed to receive quadrant shaped lugs 8 provided near the inner corners of the sect-ions forming the top of the table.

The table top comprises two sections 9 of like size and having a matching tongue and groove at their meeting edges to hold the sections in the same plane when in position; The table top is detachable and is supported upon the leaves forming] the extensions. When the extension leaves are drawn outward the sections 9 occupy the space formed between the innermost extensions and rest upon the blocks 6 and the slides. The recesses 7 and lugs 8 prevent displacement of the sections 9 when placed in position.

The table comprises a plurality of ex tensions each consisting of a leaf or win and slides. Certain extensions are provide with supports or leg sections 10, which are connected to the sections to fold so as to be out of the way when the sections are moved inward. The supports or leg sections 10 are adapted to be thrown into operative position automatically by means of springs, thereby avoiding special care on the part of the person drawing the sections outward to increase the length of the table. The leg sections 10 are connected to their supporting extensions by means of spring hinges. The leg sections are adapted to be folded by means of cords 11, each cord being connected at one end to a leg section and secured at its opposite end to the leaf of the adjacent extension, said cord passing over a guide pulley 12 provided-upon the extension to which the leg section is attached. The leg section is folded by swinging the leaf to which the cord 11 is attached. The supports or leg sections 10 when folded occupy the space formed between the series of slides. In the present instance the table is shown as embodying four extensions, two at each end. The supports or leg sections 10 are attached to the outer extensions so as to support the same when drawn outward. Two of the series of slides are fixed to the frame of the table and are indicated at 13. The remaining slides are located upon opposite sides of the fixed slides and are movable with their respective leaves to which they are attached. The outer extensions comprise leaves 14 and slides 15. Each of the inner extensions consists of a leaf 16 and slides 17. The leaf 14 is rigidly attached to the slides 15, whereas the leaf 16 is hinged or pivoted at its inner edge to the slides 17, thereby leaving the leaf free to swing upward at its outer edge to which is secured the cord or flexible connection 11. When the extensions are moved inward the leaves 16 overlie the leaves 14. The grooves 18 of the several slides have their opposite end portions in different planes which are spaced apart a distance equal to the thickness of the leaves so that the leaves may occupy a superposed relation when the extensions are moved inward. The portion of the blocks 6 projecting above the frame 1 is equal in depth to the combined thickness of the leavesl4 and 16 at the sides thereof, so that when the extensions are moved inward the upper sides of the blocks 6 and the topmost leaves 16 are flush, thereby supporting the top or sections 9 in level position. A groove 19 isformed in the under side of each of the leaves 16 to receive the cord or flexible connection 11 when the leaf 16 occupies a position above the leaf 14. The intermediate portion of each of the grooves 18 is inclined, the inclination being gradual so as not to-interfere with the free movement of the slides and extensions when drawing the sections outward or pushing them inward. When the extensions are slid or moved inward a catch 20 pivoted to the inner portion of each of the leaves 14 engages the inner edge of the overlying leaf 16 so that when drawing outward upon the extension embodying the leaf 14' both extensions move outward together. l/Vhen both extensions have been drawn outward to the limit of the movement of the inner extension the catch 20 is disengaged from the leaf 16 when the outer extension may be drawn outsion is at the limitof its outward movement the leg section 10 attached thereto is in vertical position to form a support therefor. If preferred the catch may be released and the outer extension drawn outward independently of the inner extensions. It is to be understood that the extensions may be independently operated.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is:

In an extension table, the combination of a frame, a top removably fitted upon the frame, a plurality of extensions, two sets of slides each comprising a plurality of members, the inner members being secured to the frame and the slide members having grooves, the end portions of which are in different relative planes whereby when moving the slide members upon one another they at the same time have a vertical movement to admit of the extensions clearing one another, a foldable leg section pivo-tally connected to the outer portion of the outer most extension, a flexible connection secured to the lower portion of the folding leg section and to the outer edge of the inner extension, and a catch attached to the underside of the inner portion of the outer most extension and adapted to engage the inner edge. of the said inner extension to cause both extensions to move together when pulling upon the outer extension.
