To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. BEATTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Register, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of this invention to provide a wall register, the movable closure of which may readily be held in a series of open positions.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for manipulating the closure element of a device of the class described.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wall register which can readily be kept free from dust and dirt, owing to the fact that the movable element in the register is not inclosed across its front, by a grate or grille.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wall register which may readily be thrust open by the foot of the operator, and to equip such a register with a support or platform adapted to receive the foot of the operator.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for assembling the several parts of the device, whereby the operation of the structure may be facilitated, and its durability promoted.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sect-ion, parts being shown in elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section adjacent the inner face of the operating lever; Fig. A is a vertical transverse section along the outer face of the operating lever; and Fig. 5 is a fragmental rear elevation.
In the drawings, the wall upon which the register is mounted, is denoted generally by the numeral 1. The periphery 2 of the easing portion of the register is flat, and may be secured against the wall 1 in any desired manner. Within its periphery 2, the casing bulges forwardly as denoted by the numeral 3, and in the central portion of the casing there is an opening, seen most clearly in Fig. 1, and denoted by the numeral 4.
Secured to the rear face of the casing, and, if desired, formed integrally therewith, is a rearwardly project-ing flange 5. This flange 5 entirely surrounds the opening 4, and is spaced slightly from the said opening, so as to form, between the flange 5 and the opening 1, a shoulder 6. A lever 7 is dis posed at one end of the casing, in upright position, this lever 7 being fulcrumed, intermediate its ends, as denoted by the numeral 8, to a projection 5 of the flange, as seen most distinctly in Fig. 4C. The rear edge of the projection 5 conforms approximately to the outline of the rear edge of the lever 7, and in Fig. 4 a portion of the lever 7 is broken away so that the projection 5, disposed beyond the lever, may appear. A finger 9 projects laterally from the lever 7 adjacent the lower end thereof, this finger 9 being adapted to slide in a guide 10, secured at its ends to a vertically swinging closure 11, pivoted, as shown at 12, to the casing, along the upper edge of the opening 4 therein.
As seen to best advantage in Fig. 1, and there denoted by the numeral 14, the shoulder 6 is cut away at one end of the opening 1, and adjacent the upper edge of said opening, to expose the upper end 15 of the lever 7. Thus, the upper end 15 of the lever 7 may be tilted outwardly, in order to swing the closure 11 rearwardly, to open the register.
Referring particularly to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the upper extremity of the lever 7 projects outwardly beyond the forward face of the casing, as denoted by the numeral 16, the upper end face of the portion 16 being serrated as shown at 17 As denoted by the numeral 18, the lever 7 is cut away upon its forward edge adjacent its lower end, so that the upper end 15 of the lever overhangs that portion of the shoulder 6 to which the numeral 19 is applied in Fig. 1. In Fig. 4 of the drawing, this cut-ting away of the lever is denoted by the numeral 18, and it will there be seen that the lower end of the lever is adapted to abut against the rear face of the portion 19 of the shoulder 6, the tilting movement of the lever being thus limited.
By referring to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that the device includes a platform 20, preferably an open work structure. This platform 20 is provided with lugs 21, adapted to be bolted, as shown at 22, or secured in any other desired manner, to the lower portion 23 of the flange 5, the platform 20 thus projecting rearwardly from the casing, along the lower edge of the opening 4 in the casing. If desired, the platform 20 may be curved upwardly,
from its forward edge toward its rear edge. A flat spring strip 2% is introduced between the lever 7 and one end portion of the shoulder 6, the upper end of this spring strip being preferably secured to the flange 5, so that the free portion of the spring may bear against the adjacent face of the lever 7 In practical operation, the foot or finger of the operator may be placed upon the serrated upper end 17 of the lever 7, and the lever thereby tilted, the finger 9 sliding beneath the guide 10 and swinging the closure 11 into an open position. The spring 24 hearing frictionally against the lever 7, will serve to prevent the closure 11 from moving from the position to which it has been tilted. It is to be noted that the spring plate 24 is located between the pivot element 8 of the lever 7 and the shoulder 6 of the casing. By this construction, should the spring plate as become loosened, the pivot element 8 and the shoulder 6 will cooperate to limit the movement of the plate 24, so that the plate, although loosely secured to the flange 5, will, nevertheless, be maintained in bearing against the lever 7. By reason of the fact that the guide 10 is applied to the rear face of the closure, the lever 7 being provided with a finger 9, the lever is not weakened, the guide 10 also serving to stiffen the closure. If desired, the closure 11 may be opened by a direct thrust from the foot of the operator. The platform 20 is adapted to receive the foot of the operator and thus a person may be seated in front of the register, his feet being disposed within the register and upon the platform 20, for the purpose of warming the feet of the operator.
The device is so constructed that a person may seat himself in front of the register, and by a single movement, introduce his feet within the contour of the register to rest upon the platform 20, the register being at the same time swung open. The
device is so constructed, as hereinbefore pointed out, that, after the register has thus been swung open, the closure 11 will remain in an open position, and not swing downwardly to engage the operators feet.
It will be seen that the member 11 constitutes the sole closure for the opening 4. There is no grating, or grille in front of this closure 11, these gratings and grilles which have been commonly employed in devices of this character serving as places in which dust collects in considerable quantities. In my invention, the member 11, being exposed, may be wiped free from dust and dirt, at any time.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a casing provided with an opening and having a rearwardly projecting flange spaced from the opening to form a shoulder between the flange and the opening; a rearwardly swinging closure pivoted at its up per edge to the casing and adapted to move within the flange into abutment with the shoulder; a lever; a pivot element uniting the lever with the flange; the lever being located between the flange and the closure, the lower end of the lever being housed behind the shoulder, and the shoulder being cut away to give access to the upper end of the lever; a spring plate secured at one end to the flange and bearing against the lever, the plate being located between the pivot element and the shoulder; a finger projecting laterally from the lever; and a guide secured to the rear face of the closure, and adapted to receive the finger for sliding movement.
