CHANGEABLE SIGN FOR ADVERTISING PURPOSES, 860.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Ngyflgfi 1909,
Application filed. June 10, 1909. Serial No. 501,417.
will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in changeable advertisingmeans and consists essentially in the provision of a rotary disk upon which appear various advertisements and means being provided whereby, as a door is opened, a partial rotary movement may be imparted to the disk to disclose one or another of a series of advertisements appearing on the disk and through a sight aperture.
Our invention comprises various other details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will behereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
We illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a door and means carried thereby adaptedto contact with and actuate a mechanism for rotating a disk. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the door attachment and the hinged member actuated thereby. Fig. 3 is a topplan'view showing the pivotal means actuated by the door carrying member. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing a casing with a sight aperture through wlnch may be seen a section of the rotary card adapted to contain advertising matter, and Fig. 5 is an elevation from the rear showing the means for giving an intermittent rotary movement to the'disk as the door is opened.
Reference now being had to thedetails of the drawings byletter, A designates a door hinged to a frame A which has fastened to the inner face thereof adjacent to its upper end a spring-pressed bolt B from which eX- tends a knob B, said bolt being mounted in a suitable casing B The upper end of said bolt is beveled, as at b. Fastened above the door and adjacent thereto is a plate C which has a tongue 0 hinged thereto, the outer face of said tongue having a beveled projection D behind which said bolt is adapted to be normally positioned when the door is closed. It will be noted that said tongue is positioned a slight distance, preferably of the width of the bolt, from the face of the door, and D is a stop adapted to limitthe throw of said tongue in one direction. Secured to said tongue is a wire E which is turned to form an eye E and to which a cord F is fastened which passes over a pulley F and its other end is fastened to a pivotal bar G. A spring C is adapted to return the pivotal tongue C to its normal position, after having been swung outward by the bolt as the door is opened.
I Mounted at any suitable location, preferably within the room into which the door A opens, is a casing H having a swinging door H with a sight aperture H therein and mounted within said casing is a stub shaft I upon which is loosely journaled a disk K upon which is adapted to appear various advertising cards arranged in any manner and adapted to be displayed in rotation at the sight aperture as an intermittent move ment is imparted to the disk. Fixed also to said stub shaft is a wheel N having a series of scallops N in the circumference thereof and'forming means whereby an intermittent movement may be imparted to said wheel and the disk which rotates therewith.- Mounted to have a reciprocating movement upon the horizontally disposed bar 0 fastened to the wall of said casing or behind the disk is a movable shell Q to one end of which is fastened a cord'Q which passes over a pulley Q and is fastened to the pivotal bar Gr affording means whereby, as said bar is tilted asthe door is opened, a movement will be imparted to said shell by the pulling upon the cord which is fastened to the hinged tongue 0. Projecting from said shell is a fixed arm J which serves as a stop to limit the rotary movement of said wheel by an angled end of said projection coming in contact with the marginal edge of one of the scalloped edges of said wheel. 7 Also pivotally mounted upon said shell is a link L which is adapted, as the shell is moved in one direction, to contact with one of the edges of the scalloped portion of the wheel to give the same an intermittent rotary movement. A shoulder M projects from said shell and against which said link is adapted to contact to limit its movement in one direction, thus allowing said link to tilt freely as it moves to assume a position shown by dotted lines in Fi 5 of the drawings and, upon the return movement of the shell to its normal position, said link is prevented from tilting in the opposite direction by the shoulder M against which it contacts, thus causing an intermittent movement to be imparted to the wheel N. Fixed to the wall of the casing in which said disk is mounted is a spring R, one end of which is adapted to contact with the projections intermediate the scallops to arrest the rotary movement of the wheel in one direction, said spring yielding when a rotary movement is imparted to the disk. A bell T is fastened behind said disk and S is a pivotal lever mounted upon a pivot S and has a hammer S at one end, while its other end has a widened portion S positioned in the path of the marginal edges of the scalloped portion of said wheel and designed to cause the hammer to strike the bell each time an intermittent rotary movement is imparted to the disk. Fastened to one end of said shell is a cord P passing over a suitable pulley P and having a weight P fastened to its end, the oflice of which weightis to return the parts to their normal positions after having been actuated by the opening of the door.
The operation of our invention will be readily understood and is as follows hen the door is opened, the bolt being positioned behind the pivotal tongue C will cause the latter to tilt and, through the medium of the ropes as shown and described,
the shell will be drawn horizontally upon said bar and the integral projection upon said shell, which normally holds the disk from rotating, will be drawn laterally away from the scalloped wheel and the pivotal link will ride idly over the projection intermediate two of the scallops of the wheel. The forward movement of the shell, which is imparted thereto by pulling upon said ropes, will also cause the weight to be raised and,-when the bolt passes by the end of the tongue, said weight will return the parts to their normal positions and, in the opposite movement of the shell, said link coming in contact with one of the marginal edges of the scalloped wheel will cause an intermittent movement to be imparted to the latter and also to the disk which rot-ates with said scalloped wheel, thus disclosing another part of the disk upon which is adapted to appear various advertising cards at the sight aperture. Then the shell carrying said integral projection and the pivotal link return to their normal positions, the angled end of said projection will engage and hold the scalloped wheel from further rotation until the operation is repeated by opening the door the next time. As the scalloped wheel is given an intermittent movement, the spring upon the rear face of the casing will contact with the edge of the scalloped wheel and serve to hold the same from rotation when the shell is being drawn forward as Y the door is opened. When the weight falls,
said spring will be pushed back by the scalloped wheel, allowing the latter to move freely. As the door is closed, the beveled end of the bolt coming against the lower beveled edge of said tongue C will be thrown back into its casing and allow the door to close, after which the spring acting against said bolt will throw the latter behind the tongue and in readiness for the next operation as the door is again opened.
