.DEVICE FOR CRACKING NUTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 19, 1910. Serial No. 582,638.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT C. WHITE,
citizen of the United States, residing at Fultonville, county of Montgomery, State of New York, have invented a certain new panying' drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invent-ion relates to a device for cracking nuts, and its object is to provide for cracking hard shell nuts by means simple in construction and effective in operation.
In the drawings accompanying this specification:-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device with its swinging cover removed. Fig; 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the device with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the parts forming the frame of the device. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the yoke connecting the sliding member with the rock shaft. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the sliding member. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the swinging cover shown installed in Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a detail sectional View showing the manner of securing the rock shaft against lateral play in the supporting frame.
Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings :-A is a base plate provided with an opening A over which the device'is mounted.
B and B are side members of the frame, connected together at one end by the cross member B tapped to receive an adjustable thumb screw G having a concave end C, to receive the nut to be cracked.
D is a rock shaft journaled in the members B and B.
E is an operating lever bolted to the rock shaft D. The shaft D having a web portion D provided with apertures for the passage of bolts, placed so as not to engage the lever in line with each other, thus avoiding any tendency to split the operating lever along its grain due to undue strain occasioned by operating the latter. The other end of the rock shaft D is provided with a projecting lug cl which when the parts are assembled, is on the outside of the side member B. Spaced from the lug cl and on the inside of the member B is a beaded or rib portion (Z. So also adjacent to the other side member B is a beaded portion (Z formed on the rock shaft. These ribs co-acting with the side members serve to prevent any lateral movement of the rock shaft when the parts are assembled. To provide for the passage of the web portion D through the side member B when assembling the parts, I form the same with a V-shaped aperture 6 through which the portion D may pass.
6 is a depending pinsecured to the underside of the lever E which upon encountering the base plate serves to limit the downward movement of the lever.
F is a U-shaped sliding member, the side walls of which are provided with projecting ribs F adapted to slide in the slotted ways 6' of the side members B and B.
is a depression formed in the face of the sliding member in which the nut to be cracked is placed.
G is a yoke-shaped frame pivoted at one end to the arms of the rock shaft D; the other end being enga ed to the sliding member F by the pin G supported in the side walls of the sliding member F.
H is a cover hinged to the pin G, as shown in Fig. 2;the part being omitted in Fig. 1 that the other mechanism may be more fully disclosed.
Having indicated the several parts by reference letters, the operation of the device will now be explained. The lever E and cover H are first raised to an approximately vertical position and the thumb screw C adjusted to receive the nut to be cracked which is placed between it and the sliding member F. The cover is then lowered to protect the operator from. flying fragments of the shell and the lever actuated. This action forces the sliding member toward the thumb screw thereby crushing the shell of the nut. Upon raising the lever, the nut is released, permitting the crushed shell and nut to drop through the aperture A into any suit-able receptacle previously placed below to receive them.
Having thus described my invention,wl1at I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, a pair of spaced side frames, a sliding element supported in slotted ways formed in said side frames, a rock shaft journaled in the frame, means for actuating said rock pair of spaced side frames slotted to receive a sliding element supported therein, a rock shaft journaled in the side frames, means connecting the rock shaft and sliding element, a lever for actuating the rock shaft, an adjustable thumb screw supported between the side frames in line with the sliding element between whose end and the opposing face of the sliding element the nut to be cracked is adapted to be placed, and a cover hinged to the sliding element designed to bridge the space between it and the adjustable thumb screw.
3. In a device of the character described,
a sliding element supported in a suitable frame, a rock shaft journaled in the frame, means for actuating said shaft, means connecting the rock shaft and sliding element, an adjustable abutment secured in the frame in line with the sliding element, and the frame comprising a pair of side walls spaced apart bridging the opening between the adjustable abutment and sliding element, whereby a guard is provided against laterally flying fragments of the fractured shell.
