Description
Patented 1m l7, I902. a. A. WODDMAN.
JOURNAL BOX.
(Application filed June 8, 1901.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. \VOODMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF TI-IREE-FOURTHS TO KIRBY LUMBER COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
JOURNAL-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 702,899, dated June 17, 1902.
Y Application filed June 8, 1901.
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. WooDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to novel improvements in journal-boxes, and has particular reference to the manner of securing the key or wedge therein, its object being to enable the key and brass to be easily and quickly removed from the box after raising the weight from the key.
The invention is especially adapted for use in car-journals, and in the accompanying drawings I have illustrated the invention in connection with a carjournal-box of ordinar construction, and referring to which- Figure 1 is a central sectional view. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a front view.
In the drawings like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several figures.
A designates the journal box, which is shown with its lid removed.
I-Ieretofore it has been customary to provide lugs at the top of a car journal-box to prevent endwise movement of the key 0, and in order to remove the key and brass D it has been necessary to raise the box until the lugs are in a plane above the key, so that the latter may be withdrawn. Instead of employing the lugs heretofore commonly used 1 provide a pin removably secured across the corner formed by the top and side of the box, this pin being arranged in an opening F in the top of the box and extending through an opening G in the side of the box and being held in place by its head f, which rests upon the top of the box and closes the opening F, and by the cotter-pin g, passing through an Serial No. 63,743. (No model.)
opening in the end of the pin and engaging the side of the box. One of these pins is preferably arranged at each upper corner of the box, and they constitute removable stops for the key and are preferably curved in'the manner shown in the drawings. When it is desired to remove the key, the stop-pins are first withdrawn, which leaves the key free to move endwise after simply lifting the Weight therefrom and without raising the box to the extent heretofore required for clearing the stationary lugs.
I do not limit myself to the use of any particular kind of, journal-box and bearing, as it is obvious that t-he invention may be embodied with journal-boxes of many different constructions and the same improved results secured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and .desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'1. In a journal-box, the combination with a key or wedge, of a pin removably secured across the corner formed by the top and side of the box to prevent endwise movement of the key or wedge.
2. In a journal-box, the combination with a key or wedge,'of a curved pin arranged in the corner formed by the top and side of the box to prevent endwise movement of the key or wedge.
3. In a journal-box provided with openings in its top and side adjacent to the corner formed thereby, the combination of a key or wedge, and a pin removably secured in said openings across said corner to prevent endwise'movement of the key or wedge.
GEORGE A. W'OODMAN.
