` E. POssON PEDESTAL AND WEAR PLATE Fon RAILWAY cARs Filed March 22. V1922' Patented Bec. 4, 1923.
ED'WARD POSSN, 0F CHIC/13G ELLENGIS.
Application filed March 22, E922.
To all whom t may con-cern.'
Be it known .that I, EDWARD PossoN, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at Chicago, inthe county or Cook and State oi Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in .Pedestals and W ear Plates for Railway Cars, ci' whichthe ollowing is a specifica-tion.
rIhis invention relates lto improvements in pedestals and wear plates for railway cars, and has for its object toprovide a pedestal which has means to enable the quick and ready attaclunent of a wear plate lthereto between the pedestal and the journal box.
Another object consists inthe provision of a new article of manufacture comprising a wear plate.
These and other1 objects will be more fully outlined and described in :the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a pedestal;
F ig. 2 is a vertical section thereof, taken on the line 2 2 of F ig. l;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, taken o-n the line 3-3 of F ig. 2;
Fig. el is a perspective view oli' one jaw of the pedestal, showing the wear plates attached thereto; and
F ig. 5 is a plan View or" the blank from which Ithe wea-r plate is constructed.
Like numerals reifer to like elements throughout the drawings, in which- 10 indicates generally a pedestal having 35 depending spaced jaws l0 provided with spaced vertical ribs l0 constructed to engage a journal box and ride in grooves therein, as is well known to those skilled in the Serial lic. 545,.7Y-
ant. it their upper and lower ends the ribs l()b are undercut, as indicated by the nurserals l()C and 10d, designating the upper and lower undercuts, respectively. Vilear plates l2, of steel or the like, are provided, havin projecting tabs or tongues l2a at the top and bottoni thereof, 'and side flanges 121. Ihe 45 sides of the wear plates may be bent before or after attachment to the ribs. The tongues 12a are bent around the undercut extremities of the ribs 10b at the top and bottoni, as shown, for example, in Fig. l, and serve to hold the wear plates securely on the ribs, thereby receiving the wear from frictional Contact with the journal box or wear plates carried by :the journal boxes.
It will be apparent that with this construction of pedestal and wear vplalte attachment or replacement of the wear plates to the pedestals requires the expenditure of little time yand labor, and results in the secure mounting of the wear plates.
It will be understood that I' do not wish :to be restricted tothe ttor-ni of my invention -shown and described herein, except as defined in the appendedV claim.
I claim In combination, a pedestal having depending jaws, said jaws being provided with ribs, said ribs being undercut at their upper and lower extremities, and wear plates mounted on ribs and having portions Y bent over and engaging `the undercut extremities of said ribs.
In testimony whereof, I have subscribed nay naine. l
