Application filed May 13, 1926. Serial No. 108,824.
This invention relates generally to rails such as used for steam and electric railways and the like.
The invention having more particular reference to a novel type of rail joint which will permit locomotives, cars, or any type and variety of rolling stock to pass from one rail to another without a jolt or jar which ordinarily occurs, and which causes excessive .wear to. the rails and to the wheels of the rolling stock.
For further comprehension of the inveution, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing, shows a perspective view of two rails embodying my improved rail joint.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view thereof.
The rails 10' and 11, are of common ordi nary construction and design such as commonly used for steam and electric railways of all types and varieties.
As a means of jointin the rails 10 and 11, so as to allow the re ing stock passing over the said rails to pass gradually from one of the said rails to the other, the rails 10 and 11 are diagonally cut at their extremities, as desi mated-respectively by the reference numerai 20'and 21.
The rail 10 has cut, or otherwise'formed at its center, between the said diagonal cuts 20 and 21, a protruding portion 22, having an enlarged extremity, preferably circular shaped, to engage the aperture 23, cut or otherwise formed in the rail 11, between the said diagonal cuts 20 and. 21, to receive and engagethe said protruding portion of the rail 10, it being understood that the aperture 23 is suitably shaped for the purpose as above stated. The lower portion of the extremity is cut away .or otherwise removed, so as to accommodate the block 24, of any suitable shape, so as to support the extremity of the rail'll. The protruding portion 22 is provided only on the upper portion of the rail and is engaged at its lower surface 24% by the-block 2t which is disposed below the projecting portion 22. The block 2t is ,ually from one separate from the rail and may be removed and replaced by a thicker or thinner block when desired to maintain a smooth fitting relationship between the upper surfaces of the rail ends.
It is obvious that l have provided an improved rail joint, which will allow the rolling stock passing over'sam'e to pass gradpose as hereinbefore stated and set forth.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows 1. A rail joint comprising diagonally cut rail ends,
diagonally cut rail ends,-one of the said rails rovided with larged circular extremity to engage an aperture cut in a second rail, between die onal cuts at theedges of its extremity, the ower portion of the said extremity of the said second rail being removed and a removable block disposed under said projection adapted to hold the latter and its rail end at a suitable elevation.
3. A rail a pro ectionon the upper portion r0 BALILNT outrun, or
to engage rail to another for the purtit a central protruding portion aving an enof one of said rail ends directed at an angle to the longitudinal axis of said of said rail ends being provided with a groove for receiving said projection and having the stock of said rail directly below said groove cut away and a removable block adapted to be disposed below said projection to support the latter and to predetermine the elevation thereof for providing a. closely fitting relationship between the upper surface of said rails.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
GYULA GAL.
