Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN SIKES, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IAN QAR-AXLE Boxes.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 172,186, dated January 11, 1876; application filed October 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, EDWIN SIKES, of Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented an Improvement in Axle-Boxes for Locomotive-Trucks, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in the combination, in an axle-box cast without a bottom plate, of a sliding oil drawer, and a dustprotecting plate, removably attached to the end of such drawer; and, further, in the combination, in an axlebox cast without a bottom plate, of the horizontally-sliding oil-drawer, the vertically-moving dust-plate, the slots, and set-screws, for securing the plate to the drawer, all as more full y hereinafter explained.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of one corner at w a: in Fig.
1. Fig. 3 is a cross-section aty y in Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section at z z in Fig. 3.
In the drawing, A represents the box, and B the brass resting on the ribs a. O is an oilreceptacle in the form of a drawer, having a rib, a, on each side, sliding in a horizontal This groove, b, cast in the side of the box. axle-box is cast without a bottom, the oildrawer supplying the place of the same, and thereby is lighter and'cheaper than those heretofore made; also, the box can be lifted off of the end of an axle-box by first sliding out the drawer, which cannot be done with boxes having permanent or bolted bottoms. D is a plate, sliding in dovetail ways I), cast on the end of the box, curved out on the upper edge to fit under the neck of the journal, where it is held in position. by the set-screws c c, tapped through the slots d (1 into the end the oil-drawer firmly in place without horizontal play, and by removing the set-screws the drawer can be taken out of the box, and at the same time serves the purpose of excluding the dust.
What I claim as my invention is-- 1. In an axle-box cast without a bottom plate, the combination of a sliding oil-drawer and a dust-protecting plate removably attached to the end of such drawer, substantially as described and shown.
2. In an axle-box cast without a bottom plate, the combination of the oil-drawer C, sliding horizontally in ways in the box, the dust-protecting plate D, sliding vertically in ways on the end-of the box, the slots (1, and set-screws c, the said dustplate securing the said oil-drawer in place, substantially as described and shown.
, EDWIN SIKES. Witnesses:
