GLOSET SEAT;
APPLICATION FILED KAY 5, 1910.

CLOSET-SEAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 25, 1911.
Application filed May 5, 1910. Serial No. 559,518.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. FRIDGE, Sr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellisville, in the county of Jones and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closet- Seats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closet seats.
One object is to provide a sanitary seat for closets, particularly privies, embodying durability, simplicity and inexpensiveness.
Another object is to provide a seat for closets embodying such characteristics that it may be easily and quickly cleaned and maintained in sanitary condition.
A still further object is to provide a removable seat for closets having means adapted to protect the user from attack by insects. f
lVith the above and other objects in View, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion, size and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View on line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line b-b of Fig. 1. Fig. 4c is a detail view of one of the hinge connections. Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, the character 1 indicates the upper portion of any convenient support having the usual opening 2.
The character A indicates a seat member formed preferably of metal whose marginal edge 3 lies flat on the top of the support around the opening 2 and whose body rises slightly, as at 4t and is then rolled or otherwise directed downwardly into the opening 2, as at 5 to render the seat member smooth at its opening comfortable and not liable to injure the user.
The member A is provided with a hinge leaf 6 which has a lip 7 adapted to swingingly and detachably latch or connect with y the pintle 8 carried by the ears 9 of the hinge leaf 10 secured to the support 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The hinge member 6 is provided With spaced raised portions 11 forming a guide 12 adapted to slidably receive the shank 13 of the plate 14 secured to the cover 15, said shank having a head 1G which projects on opposite sides of the shank and which slides under said raised portions 11 to provide for a slidable and swinging hinge connection between the cover 15 and the hinge member 6.
Depending' from the seat member A is a shield or guard 17 whose front portion projects downwardly considerably below the lower edge of the opening 2, the sides of the 'hield 17 inclining upwardly, as shown in The shield 17 is designed to protect the user of the device from attack by insects, and by virtue of its disposition will prevent lateral displacement of the seat member on the supporting structure'. As the entire attachment for the support 1 may be readily removed from the support by simply disconnecting the lip 7 from the hinge member 10, the device may be easily and quickly cleaned when necessary. As the device is preferably formed of metal the device is strictly germ and insect proof and sanitary in every respect.
What is claimed is In a sanitary closet seat, a supporting structure including a top provided with an opening, a removable metallic seat member having an opening, the marginal edge of the seat member terminating in a fiat surface to engage the top of the supporting structure and support the seat member over the opening of the supporting structure and having an upwardly curved portion which terminates in a downwardly directed continuous flange which extends into and overhangs the opening in the supporting structure in spaced relation to the latter opening, the free edge of said fla-nge being curved backwardly, said curved portions and flange providing smooth surfaces, and a guard carried by and secured to the underside of the seat member between said flange and the outer edge of the metallic seat member and projecting into the opening of the supporting structure so that it may engage the edge of the latter opening to prevent lateral disguard at its opposite sides being inclined Copies of this patent may 'be obtained for placement of the seat member on the supporting 1 structure and to protect the user from attack by insects, the lower edge of the In testimony whereof I affix my Signature in presence of two` Witnesses.
