n rrnorr vrnnr FOR roILn'rs,
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN M. MoLEoD, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at San Pedro, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Toilets, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a wash basin and has for its object to produce a utensil of this character primarily devised for use in close quarters and of a construction that permits of the same being arranged on a toilet seat, but swingable therefrom so as not to interfere with the use of the toilet.
A further object is to produce a device of this character which includes a substantially elliptical ring-like base that is hingedly supported to the rear of a toilet seat and which has hingedly secured therein an ellipticaL shaped basin having a projecting handle portion that extends over the front end of the base and which is hinged to the base beyond one side of its center whereby water will be sustained in the basin and removable therefrom upon the tilting upwardly of the handle portion thereof, the base and basin being susceptible to swinging and being sustained in a Vertical or rearward angular position to the rear of the seat, when the latter is required for use.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawings which accompany and which form part of this application.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vlew illustrating the application of the improvement.
Figure 2 is a view showing the device swung upwardly and rearwardly on the toilet seat to permit of the use of the latter.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the im= provement.
Figure 1 is a sectional view on the line 4-4; of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 4:.
Referring now to the drawings in detail the numeral 1 designates a toilet bowl of the usual construction, and 2 the seat therefor. Preferably, but not necessarily I remove the cover for the seat and between the upstanding lugs that receive the pivot pintle of the said cover I arrange a split barrel 3 of the fiat ellipticalring 5 that provides the base ofmy improvement. The barrel 3 is of metal, as is preferably the base 5, and the said barrel has its open end formed with an outwardly extending lip 6 that permits of the same being snapped over the pintle 7 of the referred to lugs 8.
In the toilet room, at one side of the hop per 1 there is a water conducting pipe 8 that has a swivel connection 9 with the angle pipe 10. The angle pipe has on its outer lateral branch a valve controlled faucet 11. The pipe 10 is susceptible to swinging over the center of the base 5 or against the wall in the toilet room away from the base and from the hopper 1.
Designed to be received in the opening in the elliptical ring base 5 there is a basin 12.
The basin has its body portion elliptical in plan and is dished so that the body of the basinwill be received through the referred to opening in the base. At its outer and reduced end the basin 12 is provided with a flat extension 13. This extension is in the nature of a handle and overlies the base and projects a slight distance therebeyond. The outer end of the handle is rounded and has preferably secured thereto a knob 14. The rear edge of the basin is adapted to lie just inward of the rear edge of the inner periphery of the ring base 5, and the basin 12 has its sides pivoted, at opposed points, and as indicated by the numeral 15, to the base 5. The pivots 15 are arranged nearer the back end of the basin 12, being close to the handle end of the said basin. In this manner, water from the faucet 11 will not influence the basin to tilting position. After washing, it is merely necessary for the user to grasp the knob 14 to swing the basin 12 upon its pivots to empty the basin, and when the device is not required for use, the same is swung on the barrel 3 and pivot '7 to the rear of the seat 2 and also at a rearward angle with respect to said seat.
It is thought that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings. will fully set forth the construction and advantages of the improvement to those skilled in the art to which such inventions relate.
Having described the invention, I claim 1. In combination with a toilet bowl or hopper and the seat therefor, of a basin comprising a ring base hingedly secured to the rear of the seat and designed. to normally rest thereon, a basin having its sides pivoted to the ring base beyond the center thereof, and said basin having an extension forming a handle which normally rests on the outer portion of the base. 7
2s The combination with a toilet bowl or hopper having a seat provided with an elliptical opening, of a wash basin including 3 afiat base having an elliptical opening and having an integral barrel at its rearend for hingedly securing the same to the cover support for the hopper seat, a basin which is elliptical in plan received in the opening in the base and pivotally secured thereto beyond its center, said basin having its outer end formed with a fiat extension providing a handle designed to normally rest on and project beyond the base, and an upstanding knob on the outer end of the handle. 7
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN M. MoLEOD.
