Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. Hnncns, a citizen of the United States, residin city and county of Philadelphia, tate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Book-Cover Protector, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a book cover protector formed of separate sections, each provided with a pocket, the pockets being adapted to receive the backs of a book and admit of adjustability relative to varying sizes of books while fully covering and protecting the backs, and admitting of the ready opening of the book to partial or full extent, provision being made for doubly-securing the members of which the pockets are formed, thus preserving the pockets intact and preventing them from opening improp erly.

For the purposes of explaining my invention the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a plan view of the sections of a book cover protector embodying my invention, the sections being in separated condition. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the protector in position on a book. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of one of the sections in open condition. Fig. A represents a plan view of a portion of said section in partly open condition. Fig. 5 represents a plan view of a portion of one of the sections showing another embodiment of the invention.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings :A designates a cover protector for a book, the same bein formed of the separate sections B and which are constructed of suitable paper or paper material. The section B is of such width as to envelop the cover A of a book, the back A and part of the other cover A of the book and said section may be said to consist of the parts D, E, F, adapted to envelop said covers and back of the book, as

above stated.

On the outer side of the part D is the fla G and on the upper and lower ends of sai in the part are the flaps H, the flap Gr being adapted to fold on the adjacent portions of the flaps H, and over the part I), thus forming the pocket J into which the cover A of the book is introduced and by which it is enveloped.

The section C is not as wide as the section B and is adapted to envelop a portion of the cover A of the book and it may be said to consist of the part K, the flap L and the upper and lower flaps M, the flap L being adapted to fold partly on the flaps M and partly over the part K, thus forming the pocket N into which the cover A of the book is introduced, and thus serving to retain the section C in position on the book and to envelop the same, it being seen that the part F of the section B freely enters said pocket N so as to preserve the continuity of the covering composed of the two sections B, and C, while providing for the adjustment of the protector in such manner as to make it applicable to large or small books, and furthermore permitting the sections B and C to slide, one on the other, as the book is opened or closed, allowing the book to lie comparatively flat when opened to the fullest extent, as shown in Fig. 2.

In order to fasten or secure the flaps G and H of the pocket J, there are formed in the flap G the tongues P, and in the flaps II the tongues Q, said tongues P and Q being punched out of the material of which the flaps are formed, thus rendering them pliable, the axes of said tongues being at right angles to each other. The tongues P are bent or passed under the adjacent inner edges of the flaps H and the tongues Q are bent or passed over the inner edge of the flap P, thus doubly-securing the flaps G and H, the adjacent tongues being at right angles to each other, as apparent in Fig. 1, the pockets thus being preserved in closed condition.

In order to fasten or secure the flaps L and M of the pocket N, there are formed in the flap L, the tongues R, and in the flaps M, the tongues S, said tongues being punched out of the material of which the flaps are formed, thus rendering them pliable, the axes of the tongues being at a right angle to each other. The tongues R are bent or passed under the adjacent inner edges of the flaps M and the tongues S, and the tongues S are bent or passed over the inner edge of the flap L, thus doubly-fastening or securing the flaps L and M, the axes of said tongues R and S being at right angles to each other, as is most apparent in Fig. 1, the pocket N thus being preserved intact.

It will be noticed furthermore that the tongues exist directly in the respective flaps, thus avoiding the outward projection of separate adhesively-attached tongues from the flaps and the liability of the same to be torn-off, it being evident that the tongues are punched-out of the material of the flaps inside of the marginal edges thereof and so possess strength that increases the durability of the connection of the flaps.

In the part E of the section B, is an opening T through which the title of the book on the back may be seen.

In Fig. 5 I show another embodiment of my invention in which the section C has the left hand edge of its part K cut away as at U, so that when the sections 13 and C are in position or telescopically-engaged, the parts F and K being separate and open, their walls form an exterior pocket to receive letters, papers, tickets, etc., access to the same being facilitated by said cut-away edge U.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by 'Let ters Patent, is

1. A book cover protector consisting of a section comprising a body of material and folded flaps thereon on the opposite sides and an adjacent end thereof and tongues in the respective flaps with the tongues of adj acent flaps at an angle with each other, the tongues of the flaps being adapted to engage the adjacent edge portions of the adjacent flap at a locking angle to each other thus doubly interlockingly securing the flaps with each other in a plane substantially parallel with that of the body, and a section adapted to receive the free end of the body of said section and having similar side and end flaps doubly secured to each other in a plane substantially parallel with the body. 2. A book cover protector comprising an elongated section having flaps upon opposite sides and an adjacent end, said flaps being formed with tongues, the tongues of adja cent flaps being disposed with their longitudinal axes at angles to each other and doubly securing said flaps in right-angled position in a plane parallel with the body portion, and an independent section having flaps at opposite sides and one end provided with tongues, the tongues of adjacent flaps being disposed with their longitudinal axes at right angles to each other and engaging and doubly locking the flaps in position in a plane parallel to the body portion, the first named section receivable within the lastnamed section and provided with an opening for the display of the title of the book.
