Application August 19, 1953, Serial No. 375,202 a 4 Claims. 01. 2s1 17 The invention relates generally to supplement holders for books such as law books, such holders permitting the attachment to the books of pocket supplements by means of which the contents of the books can be periodically brought up to date.

In connection with the foregoing, an object of the invention is to provide an improved supplement holder and an attachment for the holder which will permit the holder to be aflixed to the cover of a book.

Another and more specific object of the invention'is to provide an improved supplement holder for receiving a pocket supplement and to additionally provide in connection therewith a novel attachment member for the holder in the form of an envelope and which has telescoping relation with a cover of the holder and with a cover of the book for releasably attaching the holder to the book.

Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a pocket supplement holder and an attachment member therefor by-means of which the supplement holder can be afiixed to the front cover of a book on the outside thereof. As a result, the book is not disfigured nor is the back or the binding thereof broken as is often the case when a pocket supplement is fitted withinthe book.

A still further object is to provide a new and improved holder and attachment member therefor for afiixing a pocket supplement to the outside of a book, which will be of simple construction, embodying very few parts, and which will have universal application, being adaptable to all kinds of books. Another object of the invention resides in the provi- 'sion of a pocket supplement holder and attachment memberfor affixing the holder to a cover of a book, the said combination permitting release of the pocket supplement at any time although the supplement is at all times adequately protected and available for reference.

With these and various other objects in view, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specification, drawings and claims appended hereto.

Figure 4 is a perspective view of a conventional pocket supplement; and

Figure 5 is a perspective view of the attachment member of the invention which is employed to releasably retain the holder to a cover of a book.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the comice binationcomprising the invention consists of a supplement holder generally designated by numeral 10, Figure 3, and an attachment member 12, best shown in Figure 5. The holder is designed for receiving a conventional pocket supplement such as indicated by numeral 14, Figure 4, and said holder, with the pocket supplement inserted therein, is releasably attached or aflixed to a cover of a book by the attachment member 12 which has telescoping relation, preferably with the rear cover of the holder and with the front cover of the book.

all in a manner well understood in the art Publishers of law books, in particular, and also publishers of reference books, digests and the like, provide pocket supplements from time to time in order to render the contents of the respective books current and up to date. It has heretofore been customary to aflix the pocket supplement to the inside of the rear cover of the book, which practice is not entirely satisfactory since the addition of the supplement tends to enlarge the book whereby possible damage to the binding and general disfiguration of the book may occur. The combination of the present invention has eflfectively solved the existing problem in connection with pocket supplements by providinga holderlO for the supplement which protects the same by the front and rear covers therefor and which is releasably aflixed, preferably to the front cover of the book, by the attachment member 12 in the form of an envelope, all of which will be particularly described in detail as the description proceeds.

The pocket supplement 14, as shown in Figure 4, and e which is representative of the supplements such as are providedfor the books to which the invention pertains, essentially consists of pages 21 which are stapled and 'bound to front and rear flapsby means of the binding tape such as 22. For purposes of thepresent invention it is only necessary that the pocket supplement have a front flap such as 23. Should a rear flap alsobe provided, as maysometimes be the case, the invention'is equally adaptable thereto'with no structural change in the parts being required. The pocket supplement is combined with the holder 10 by insertion of the flap 23 in a pocket such as 24, provided by the holder. Said holder essentially consists of a front cover 25, a rear cover 26, and the intermediate backing 27. The holder may be formed of fairly heavy material similar to that comprising the covers of the book, or the holder may be formed of lighter material such as fabric, paper, imitation leather or plastic.

A single sheet may be suitably bent into shape to form the front and rear covers of the holder 10, with the front cover 25 thereof having a portion 28 folded into overlapping relation with the inside surface to form the pocket 24, previously referred to. The folded overlapping flaps 30 are glued or otherwise secured to portion 28 to complete the formation of the pocket. Similar folded, overlapping flaps 31 are provided to complete the formation of the cover. In a like manner the rear cover 26 is formed with the folded, overlapping flaps 32 and which are glued to the inside of said cover. The pocket supplement 14 is placed in the holder and releasably retained in proper relation within the holder by insertion of the flap 23 of the supplement in pocket 24. The position of the parts with the supplement in inserted relation in the holder is illustrated in the perspective views, Figures 1 and 2.
