Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Im rovements in a Combined Matchind-Shield, Cigar-Holder, and Card- Case, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in 1 a device to be 'used as a match safe, wind shield, cigar holder and card case, but it is more particularly designed for use as a match safe and wind shield, yet from the following description it will be understood that it can be used as a cigar holder and match safe only, and the invention consists in certain peculiarities of the construction, novel arrangement, and operation of the various parts thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned general character which shall be very simple and inex ensive in construction, strong, durable and efficient in operation and so made that its outer surface may be utilized when desired, for the display of advertising matter.

A further object of the invention is to furnish means whereby the device may be formed of a single sheet of flexible material,

' the members of which can be readily folded into their proper positions and securely held in place so as to form a receptacle for matches and. pouch or pocket for the reception of cigars, or, when desired, as a wind shield to prevent a match from being blown out while lighting a cigar or pipe, and also to furnish a receptacle for cards and the like.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be disclosed in the subjoined description and explanation.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains, to make and use the same, I now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view of a device embodying the inventiomshowing it as being used as a match safe and wind shield for the purpose of, protecting the flame of a mate against the wind while lighting a cigar; Fig. 2, is a front view of the device; Fig. 3, is a rear view thereof; Fig. 4, is a plan view showing the formation of the sheet out of which the device is formed and illustrating by dotted lines the points at which the various members are to be folded one on the other; F ig. 5, is a fragmental view of a portion of the sheet, showing flaps on the inner surface of the front member of the device bent back upon itself from the position shown in Fig. 4, and illustrating said flaps as being provided with an adhesive substance; ig. 6, is a plan View of the sheet showing it as it will appear when some of the members have been folded one on the other; Fig.7, is a similar View of like parts, illustrating a further advance in the steps of folding themembers or forming the device; Fig. 8, is a, face view of the device as it will appear when complete; Fig. 9, is a fra mental plan view showing a modification 1n the construction of the sheet out of which the device is formed; and Fig, 10, is a front view of the complete device when formed with said modified construction, yet illustrating the piece of sand or scratch paper in the act of being inserted into the pocket therefor.

Referring now to Fig. 4, of the drawings, the reference numeral 12, designates a single sheet of flexible material such as paper, leather, leatherette, cloth or the like, which, if desired, may be treat d so as to render it substantially non-combustible, This sheet is,

formed into a series of members or portions 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 1s, and 19, all of which are united together as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 4, of the drawin s. The member 13, which will be designa ed as the front member has extended from one of its ends the member 15, and from one of its sides the member 16, while the other side of the member 13, is connected of the member 13, the edges of which opening will be reinforced by the flaps 20, which 4 are preferably provided on their surfaces I with an adhesive substance 23, to cause them to adhere to the member 15, when the same is folded on the dotted line 24, against the innersurface ofthe member 13. As shown, the member 15, is provided with an angular opening 25, corresponding in shape and size to the opening 22, in the front member 13, which latter member is provided in its lower portion with elongated openings 20-, to receive the extensions on the match holding flap as will be-presently explained.

The member 16, is provided with creases 27, which are in the form of an inverted Y and are adapted to register with creases 28,

of a similar shape formed in the rear member 14, when the members are folded into their final positions. The creases 27 ,in the member 16, and the creases in the member 14, are so formed in eachof said members that when the member 16, rests in its final position against the inner surface of themember 14, said members may be easily bent outwardly by pressing the edges of the device toward each other as shown in Fig. 1, of the-drawings. The member 17, is preferably provided with a rectangular opening 29, at the erimeter of which are provided a series of aps 30, which may be folded-on the dotted lines 31, from the position shown in Fig. 4, to that shown in Fig. 6, that is, against the inner .surface of the member 17, thus reinforcing the edges of the opening 29, therein.

At each of its side edges the member 17 is provided with an angular flap 32, which may be folded on the dotted lines 33, from the positions indicated in Fig. 4, to that shown in Fig. 6, or in other words, against the inner surface of the member 17 thereby reinforcing its side edges. The member 17, is provided at its lower end with a flap or. member 18, whichis adapted to be folded on the dotted line 34, against the inner surface of the lower portion of the member 17,

from the position shown in Figs. 4, and 6, to that illustrated in Fig. 7, of the drawings. By so folding the member or flap 18, it is apparent that as the flaps 32, are'cut at one of their ends from the member 17 extensions 35, will be provided which are adapted to be inserted in the openings 26, of the member 13, when the member 17, is folded on the-dotted lines 36, as one of the steps in forming the device. The extensions 35, may be provided with an adhesive substance 23, to secure them in position, after they have been inserted in the openings 26, of the front member. The member 19, which is extended from the upper portion of the rear member 14, is provided with longitudinal creases 37, and may have at its upper portion adhesive material 23, to secure said member in position when it is folded on the dotted line 38, in the final step of forming the device.

In Figs. 9, and 10, of the drawings is shown a modification in the construction of the device which consists in employing the front member 13, of the same construction as that above described, and illustrated, except that the elongated openings 26, are omitted. In this modified form, the lower portion of the member 13*, has out there- 'from, a tongue 39, which is located directly below the apex of the opening 22, in said member, which member is provided with horizontally disposed slits 40, extending from the upper portion-of the tongue 39. In thismodification the rear member 14, is provided with creases 28, similar to those on the member 14, and above described, and has extended from its lower portion a member 17*, which is provided with an opening 29, having flaps 30, at its edges as in the other construction and for a similar purpose. The member 17 is provided at each of its edges with a flap41, which may be folded on the dotted lines .42, so as to rest on the inner surface of said member and thereby reinforce its edges.

In order to produce the device from the sheetv 12, and its members, the flaps 20, are folded on the lines 21, from the position shown in Fig. 4, to that illustrated in Fig. 5, afterwhich the member 15, is folded on the line 24, down on the member 13, when it is apparent that it will be secured in such position by reason of the adhesive material 23, on the flaps 20. The member 16, is then folded on the line 43, see Fig. 4, so as tolie on the folded member 15, in which operation the parts will assume the positions shown in Fig. 6, of the drawings, when, by

folding the members 13, 1,5, and 16, on the line 44, so-that they will lie on the inner surface of the rear member 14, it is apparent that the parts will assume .the positions shown in Fig. 7, when, by folding the member 18, on the line 34, and the member 17 on the line 36, after the flaps 32, have been folded on the lines 33, the extensions 35, (see Fig. 7,) may be inserted in the openings 26, therefor, which arrangement will afford a receptacle 45, between the member '13, and 17, and between the extensions 35,

When the member 17 is provided with the opening 29, a piece .of sand paper 46, may be inserted between the members 17 and 18, and

over the opening 29, before the member 17 is turned to its final position, by which ar- I rangement it is evident that means for Scratching the matches will be afforded. It is obvious that the opening 29, in the member 17, may be dispensed with and that a piece of sand paper may be cemented or otherwise secured to the outer surface of said member. After ,the parts have been arranged as above described, the upper end of the member 19, is inserted between the up er portions of the members 15, and16, and orced downwardly therebetween and folded on the line 38, when the member 19, will be held in such position by means of the adhesive material 23, thereon engaging the inner surface of the member 16. As the members 19, and 16, are

This arrangement of the parts of the modified form of the device will afford a match-holding receptacle 45*, between the members 13, and 17, and sand paper 46, as will be'obvious by reference to Fig. 10, of the drawings.

From the foregoing and by reference to the drawings, it will be understood and seen that when the parts shall have been folded and connected together as above described, an open-ended pouch or pocket 51, having in one of its sides an opening 22, will be formed, and that by pressing the edges of the device toward each other as shown in Fig. 1, the sides ofthe pocket or pouch 51, will be extended from one another thus allowing a lighted match to be inserted through the openin 22, into the pocket where it will be shie ded from the WIIId so that a cigar may be easily lighted by means of the flame of a match. It is also evident that when desired the pocket 51, may be used for holding cigars and that the pocket 47, may be utilized for cards, while the re? ceptacle 45, may be used for holding matches,

which can be scratched on the sand paper 46, or other suitable abrasive material.

Havin thus fully described my invention what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is- 1. A device of the character described, consistin of a front member having at one of its ends an opening, a rear member connected to one of the side edges and an intermediate member connected to the other side edge 'of the front member, a second intermediate member connected to the end of the front member which has the opening therein, the last-named member also having an opening to register with the first-named opening when the second intermediate member is folded on the front member, a third intermediate member connected to one end of the rear member, an outside member connected to the other end of the rear member, and a flap or member connected to the outer end of said outside member and adapted to be folded thereon and to engage the lower portion of the front member, all of said members adapted to be folded one on the other at their points of juncture.

2. A device of the character described, consistin of a front member having at one of its en s an opening, a rear member connectedto one of the side edges and having outwardly extended creases, and an intermediate member connected to the other side edge of the front member and also having creases to register with the creases on the rear member, a second intermediate member connected to the end of the front member which has the opening therein, the last-named member also havin an opening to register with the firstname opening when the second intermediate member is folded on the front member, a third intermediate member connected to one end of the rear member and having creases to register with the creases of the rear member, an outside member connected to the other end of the rear member, and a flap or member connected to the other end of said outside member and adapted to be folded thereon and to engage the lower portion of the front member, all of said members adapted to be folded one on the other at their points of juncture.
