Letters Patent No. 98,906, dated January 18, 1870.
IMPRO'VED LEATHER-CHNELLING AND FOLDING TOOL.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera *.Eatentuandv making paxt of the lame To all whom it may concern:
Be it `kuow'that we, A. H. BAILY and VILIJIAM G. BRA'rToN, both of Marseilles, in the county of La Salle, in the State of Illinois, have invented anew and imploved Ghannelling and Folding-Tool; and we'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
, exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and v2 are plane views.
Figure 3 is a. section, through a b, g. 2;
Figures 4, 5, and 6, are plane views of a detail.
This invention relates to a new and' useful tool, whereby the style of harness-work known as rounding, is greatly facilitated and zwcelerated. p
In order to j round up' a strap of leather in the shape it is often used for rein-lines, traces, or .other lines about a harness, it is necessary to first cut a channel into each border ofthe strap, into which the stitches are made, and which, in closing orer the seam, hide it, and thus give the work a neat appearance.
After cuttingthe channels, the strap has'to be bent or folded, in order to bring it into propel' shape to receive the senin.
To perform these two operations, preparatory to sewing, to wit, channelling and folding, our new tool is intended.
We construct, of brass orl iron, a. frame-piece, A with four slots, which guide the piece B, iigs.`4,5
This piece B has, at one end the two cutters c c, which have slots in them, to regulate the depth of the channel.
At the other end lof the piece B, a screw, C, enters into it.
This screw C projectsthrough the plate D, and is turned into the shape of a crank.
Its object is to bring the cutters c c up or down, according to t-he width of the' strap which is to be l rounded.
A hinged arm, E, having on its end a wheel, F, is v adapted inside the frame, A, and hinged at (l.
Y This wheel F swings out and in, as marked by the lilies in red.
-A shank, G, at the bottom of the frame A, is ina bench.
The operation of this tool is as follows: I i
The strap to be rounded is inserted by one end into iheframe A, doubling up under each side ofthe wheel F, g. 1. .p
The piece Bis then'screwed down until its lower ends touch the edges of the folded strap, the cut-ters c c heilig set -to the proper depth; the strap is then pulled through in the direction ofthe arrow, fig. l.
'lhe object of the hinged arm E and wheel F is to allow the wheel to be taken outof the fi'ame A when the frame A, for folding a strap, and regulating the cutting of the channels, substantially as described.
