Description

S. Y. BEACH, OFHSEYMOUR, CONNECTICUT.
\ Len-m Patent No. 90,485, daad May 25,1869.
INIPROVED BINET-WL The Schedule referred to in *these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, S. Y. BEACH, of Seymour, in the county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Belt-Awl; and
I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said draw ings constitute part of this specification, and represent, irl- Figure l, a side view of the instrument, as an awl;
Figure 2, detached from the handle, as a needle;
Figure 3, a side view; and
Figure 4, a longitudinal central section, as in operation. l l
The object of this invention is the construction of an awl, which shall answer the usual purpose of making the hole iu the belt, and, also, 'of a needle, to facil.- itate the passing of the lacing through the belt; and consists in splitting the upper, or shank-end of the awl, so as to form a pair of forceps, to receive and hold the end of the lacing, and draw it through the perforation in the belt.
To enable others to make and use my improvement, I will fully describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Y l
A is the awl, of the form generally in use.
The shank-end is slitted, as seen in fig. 2, and formed so that the two ends spring closely together, and so that they may he opened, and grasp the end of the lacing, as seen in fig. 3.
The slitted end of the awl is inserted into a handle, B, to operate llas a common belt-awl.
The several holes may be bored, while in this oo ndition; then the awl, is taken from the handle, the end of the lacing placed within the grasp of the slitted end, as seen in fig. 3, and the awl used as a needle, to faf cilitate the process of sewing through the previouslyformed perforations. Or, if preferred, the lacing may be grasped and placed into the handle, as seen in fig. 4, the first perforation formed, the needle drawn through from the handle, then the handle replaced, a second per foration formed, and the lacing drawn through in like manner as before.
Having fully described my invention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A belt-awl, constructed with a slitted shank-end, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
S. Y. BEACH.
