COVER AND STRAINER RETAINING DEVICE FOR CHURNS.

To all whom it may concern:

lie it known that I, JAMES L. NLiNDnVILLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at l-Iateher Station, in the county of Quitman and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cover and Strainer Retaining Devices for Churns, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cover and strainer retaining devices for churns, and has for an object to provide a device of this char acter which is adapted to be used particularly in connection with any well known form of hand churn, means being employed whereby the device can be conveniently engaged with or disengaged from the churn and operatively engaged with the cover or with the straining cloth so as to hold the same securely applied to the open end of the churn.

In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :-Figure l is a section through a portion of a churn showing my improved device applied thereto and positioned thereon to engage the cover to hold the same in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the device operat-ively engaged with the strainer cloth to hold the same operatively applied to the open end of the churn. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 83 of Fig. 1.

The device comprises a band 1 which is formed preferably of sections 2 and 3 hinged together at one end, as at 1. The opposite end of one section is provided with a threaded stud 5 which extends through the circumferential slot 6 in the end of the op posite section, the said stud 5 having adjustably mounted thereon a retaining or clamping nut 7 whereby the free end of the member 1 can be securely held on the churn body A, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. This construction is such that the member is adapted for interchangeable engagement with churns of different sizes.

The sections 2 and 3 of the member 1 are formed at their upper ends to provide suitable outwardly extending lugs 8 which are apertured to receive the depending studs 9 on the horizontally adjustable brackets 10, the said studs 9 bemg provided with clamping nuts 11 which are adapted to be engaged with the lugs 8 so as to hold the Specification of Letters Patent.

brackets against movement. Each bracket is provided with a pair of ears 12 which has pivoted therebetween an eccentric lever 10. The surface 11 of the lever being designed to engage the cover B of the churn so as to hold the same in a closed position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, thus obviating the necessity of holding the cover by the hand during the churning operation. The lever is provided with a member 12 which extends substantially radially with respect to the pivot of the lever, and as shown, the said member is formed in its outer edge to provide a recess 13.

I'Vhen the cover B of the churn is removed and it is desired to pour the cream into the churn, preparatory to the churning oper ation, the strainer cloth 14 is placed across the upper open end of the churn, and the levers 10 are then actuated to cause the members 12 to be moved into clamping engagement with the edge portion of the churn body and with the edge portion of the strainer cloth, the said levers 10' operating to hold the strainer cloth securely in an applied position, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The construction of the recess 13 in each member 12 is such that each member is provided with a plurality of contacting surfaces 15 and 16 which are arranged to grip the receptacle and strainer cloth respectively at a plurality of points, thus greatly insuring against any possible disarrangement of the cloth during the straining operation. hen the levers are in their released positions, the brackets 10 can be adjusted so that the said levers will be located immediately at one side of the churn so as to not interfere in any way with the removal of the cover. As shown, the ears 12 of the brackets are curved toward the center of the cover so that the pivots of the levers 10 are substantially above the upper edge of the churn.

I claim: 5',

1. The combination with a receptacle and a closure therefor; of a lever pivotally supported by the receptacle and bearing against the closure of the receptacle on one adjustment of the lever to hold the closure in closed position, and a member formed on the lever and adapted for clam ing engagement with the upper edge of t e receptacle on a second adjustment of the lever and on removal of the closure from the receptacle.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a

one adjustment of the lever, and a member carried by the lever and adapted for clamping engagement with the edge of the receptaclc and with the strainer cloth to hold the strainer cloth across the open end of the churn when the cover is removed.

4. In a cover retaining device for receptacles, a support mounted on the receptacle, a bracket pivoted on the support, and an eccentric lever pivoted on the bracket andprovided with a bearing surface adapted to contact with the cover to hold the same closed to the receptacle.
