CHURN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1912.
Application filed J1me 10, 1911. Serial No. 632,317.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLns LoUIs WVALL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Strasburger, in the county of Sheridan and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Churn, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to churns and it has for its object to provide one which may be conveniently taken apart to permit of the cleaning of the parts, a draining cup being attached to the lid for closing the body of the churn by which the butter may be readily removed from the buttermilk.
Another object of the invention. is to provide means by which the body of the churn, with its lid, may be firmly secured in a cage having trunnions journaled in bearings in the frame.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the churn; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the churn; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the lid with the arms and the pivoted drain cup.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a frame 5 is provided, having bearings 6 in which are j ournaled the trunnions 7, which are secured to a cage'consisting of the vertical members 8, and the cylindrical members 9 and 10, the cylindrical member 10 having a flange 11, which serves as a seat for the churn body 12. To one of the vertical members 8 of the cage there is pivoted a link 13, an arm 14; being pivoted to the said link 13, this arm 14 being adapted to be engaged by a link or clas 15 which is pivoted to the other vertica member 8 of the cage. The lid 16, which is provided for the churn body 12, has two depending flanges 17 and 18, said flanges 17 and 18 being spaced apart so that while the flange 17 is normally disposed against the outer side of the churn body 12, the other flange 18 is disposed against the inner side of the churn body 12, a gasket 19 being disposed between the flanges pressing against the rim at the top of the churn body. Two
depending arms 20 are secured against the inner side of the flange 18, a drain cup 21 i being pivoted to the said arms 20 at 22. There are openings 23 in the bottom of the drain cup so that the drain cup 21 may be removed with the butter while the butter-- milk remains in the churn body. A handle member 24: is disposed across the top of the lid 16, and to this handle there is secured a threaded member 25, in which a screw 26 meshes, a cam 27 being pivoted to the arm 14, so that when the arm 14 is disposed in position at the top of the lid 16 the cam 27 may be moved to press down against the screw 26 to hold the lid 16 firmly in place on the churn'body, and the churn body 12 firmly secured in the cage. A crank 28 is secured to one of the trunnions 7 by which the churn may be conveniently rotated.
' In using the invention the cream to be churned is deposited in the churn body 12 after which the cup 21 is introduced in the churn and is pressed downwardly, the cream flowing through the openings 23 until the lid 16 is in position at the top of the churn when it is pressed down with its flanges 17 and 18 one against the outer and the other against the inner side of the churn body. The arm 14 is then moved down and across the lid and its free terminal 14 is engaged by the link or clasp 15. When this has been done the arm 27 secured to the cam 27 is moved downwardly so that the cam 27 presses firmly against the screw 26. If the screw 26 is in the proper position the lid 16 will be held firmly in place on the churn body, and the churn body will be held firmly in the cage. On the other hand if it is found that the cam 27 does not press down. hard enough against the screw 26, the arm 14 may be raised by freeing its ter minal 1 1 from the clasp 15 after which the screw 26 may be turned and raised so that when the arm 14 is again disposed across the lid and the cam 27 is brought into contact with the screw 26 it will press very firmly down on the said screw for the purpose specified.
" Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a churn a frame having bearings,
a cage having trunnions journaled in the bearings, a churn body normally disposed over the lid, and a link pivoted to the cage and spaced from the pivoted end of the arm for engaging the free terminal of the arm.
2. In a churn a frame having bearings, a cage having trunnions journaled in the bearings, a churn body normally disposed in the cage, a lid for the churn body and provided with an orifice, a member adjustable'in the orifice, an arm pivotally mounted on the cage and normally disposed over the lid, and a clasp on the cage and normally spaced from the pivoted end of the arm for engaging the free terminal of the arm.
3. In a churn a frame having bearings, a cage having trunnions journaled in the bearings, a churn body normally disposed in the cage, a lid for the churn body, a link pivoted to the cage, an arm pivoted to the link and adapted to engage the lid, and locking means for the arm mounted on the cage.

cage having trunnions journaled in the bearings, a churn body normally disposed in the cage, a lid having an orifice for the churn body, a member adjustable in the orifice, a link pivoted to the cage, an arm pivoted to the link, and adapted to engage the adjustable member, and locking means for the arm mounted on the cage.
5. In a churn a frame having bearings, a cage having trunnions journaled in the bearings, a churn body normally disposed in the cage, a lid for the churn body, arms secured to and depending from the lid, a draining cup secured. to the arms, an arm pivotally mounted on the cage and normally disposed over the lid, and a locking means for the arm mounted on the cage.
6. In a churn a frame having bearings, a cage having trunnions journaled in the bearings, a churn body normally disposed in the cage, a lid for the churn body, arms secured to and depending from the lid, a draining cup pivoted to the arms, an arm pivotally mounted on the cage and normally disposed over the lid, and a locking means for the arm mounted on the cage.
7 In a churn a frame having bearings, a cage having trunnions journaled in the bearings, a churn body normally disposed in the cage, a lid for the churn body, an arm pivotally mounted on the cage and normally disposed over the lid, a locking means mounted on the cage spaced from the pivoted end of the arm for engaging the free terminal of the arm, and a cam pivoted to the arm for engaging the lid.
8. In a churn a frame having bearings, a cage having trunnions journaled in the bearings, a churn body normally disposed in the cage, a lid for the churn body, a threaded orifice, a screw meshing in the orifice, an arm pivotally mounted on the cage and normally disposed over the lid, locking means for the arm mounted on the cage, and a cam pivoted to the arm for pressing it down on the screw.
9. In a churn a frame having bearings, a cage having trunnions j ournaled in the bearings, a churn body normally disposed in the cage, a lid for the churn body, a thread ed orifice, a screw meshing in the orifice, an arm pivotally mounted on the cage and normally disposed over the lid, locking means for the arm mounted on the cage, a cam pivoted to the arm for pressing it down on the screw, arms secured to and depending from the lid and normally disposed in the churn body, and a drain cup secured to the arms. 1
10. In a churn a churn body having an open end, a lid for closing the open end of the churn body, arms secured to the lid, and normally disposed in the churn body, and a drain cup having an annular flange pivoted to the arms.
11. In a churn a churn body open at one end, a lid having two depending flanges, one A normally disposed against the outer side of the body and the other against the inner side of the churn body, arms secured to the last-mentioned flanges, and a drain cup mounted on the arms.
