To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES MiLoRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Garbage-Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in garbage receptacles and has for an ob ject to provide a receptacle with a suitably controlled opening, whereby the contents of the receptacle may be quickly and easily removed and the spilling of the contents upon the ground or the like is eliminated, whereby the refuse may be handled in a sanitary and clean manner.

It further consists of other novel' features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a perspective of my novel receptacle in operative position. Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan of the same. Fig. 3 represents a section on line a ::I:, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a section on line g -y, Fig. 2.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings :-1 designates the body portion of a receptacle embodying my invention, the same being preferably tubular and provided with a suitable beaded rim 2 formed as is customary, by means of a rod 3 inclosed in the turned end of the body portion 1.

4 designates a cover for the receptacle, which in the present instance is shown hinged at 5 to the body portion and adapted to be raised and lowered as desired. The bottom of the receptacle, in the present instance, consists of a plate 6 having inturned ends 7 in order to strengthen and reinforce the same and it is preferably mounted for sliding movement on one end of the body portion so that it may at certain times be removed and thus permit the contents of the receptacle to be discharged. As here shown, the body portion 1 is provided with a flange 8, preferably outwardly disposed, in order to form a support for a guide member 9, with which the plate 6 cooperates for sliding movement. It, will be noted, in the present instance, that the guide member 9 has inturned flanges 10 to form an opening 11 alined with the interior of the body portion 1, whereby the contents of the receptacle may pass directly through the guide member 9 when the plate 6 is moved to one side. As here shown the plate 6 cooperates with the guide member 9 through an opening 12 formed therein, the said plate (5 terminating in an extension 13 serving the purpose of a handle for operating the plate, or by which the same may be operated through the medium of a rope, wire or the like 14:. As here shown the extension 13 has a rope 14 secured thereto at one end and at the other is joined to an apertured lug 15 secured by rivets 16 or the like to the body portion 1.

In order to prevent the plate 6 from being entirely detached from the body portion 1, I preferably provide a stop 6* on the plate 6 adapted to cooperate with a lug 7" formed on one of the flanges 10. Thus when the plate 6 has been withdrawn a sutlicient distance to open the bottom of the receptacle, the stop 6* engages the lug 7" and further outward movement is prevented.

17 designates a suitable bracket. secured by rivets 18 or the like to the body portion 1 and preferably projecting above the cover 1 so that suitable screws or nails 19 may cooperate therewith to secure the same to a supporting device, such as a fence 20 or other suitable stationary part.

21 designates a second bracket secured adjacent the bottom of the receptacle 1 in any well known manner and forming an additional securing means by which the receptacle may be more substantially connected to the support 20.

In the operation of the device the receptacle 1 is connected at a suitable point to a support 20, its point of attachment being determined by the height of a cooperating receiving member, as the bucket 22, which is designed to be placed beneath the receptacle 1. The garbage, refuse, etc. are placed in the receptacle in the usual manner by opening the lid 4: and as soon as the receptacle is filled or it is desired at any other time to re- I,

to close the other end of said body portion,

move the contents therefrom, the bucket 22 or other receiving device, is placed in alinement with the opening 11 and the plate 6 withdrawn, whereupon the contents drop into the receiving device and there is no scattering or spilling of the contents adjacent the receptacle.

It will now be apparent that I have devised a complete unitary structure well adapted for the purpose intended and which is simple in construction, easy of operation and useful and efficient in practice.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character stated, an open ended body portion having an outwardly disposed flange adjacent the lower end thereof, a guide member supported upon said flange and having an opening embracing said body portion, the side edges of said guide member having inturned flanges forming a space between the same and the lower edge of said. body portion, a cover for the top end of said body portion, and a plate slidingly mounted in said space and adapted said plate having means for extent of its movement.

2. In a device of the character stated, an open ended body portion having an out- Wardly disposed flange adjacent the lower end thereof, a guide supported upon said 1' limiting the flange and having an opening embracing said body portion, the side edges of said guide member having inturned flanges forming a space between the same and the lower end of said body portion and one of said inturned flanges having an inwardly extending lug thereon, a cover for the top end of said body portion, a plate slidingly mounted in said space and adapted to close the other end of said body portion, and a stop carried by said plate and adapted to abut said lug to prevent the withdrawal of said plate.

8. In a device of the character stated, an open-ended cylindrical body portion provided with an outwardly disposed flange adjacent the lower end thereof, a guide member supported on said flange comprising inturned edges forming an opening alined with the interior of said body portion, said edges being spaced from said flange to provide guide-ways, a closure plate adapted to engage said ways and having an extension thereon forl'l'iing a means to operate said plate, a stop on said plate, a lug formed integral with one of said edges and projecting into the path of movement of said stop to limit the movement of said plate, and a cover for the upper end of said body portion.
