Be it known that I, HALvon OLsoN, a citie Zen of the United States, residing at Duluth, inthe county of St. Louis and State of Min- 5nesota, have invented certain new and usei ful Improvements in Combined Comb Cases and Cleaning Devices; and 1 do hereby declare the following to bear full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l.;. .l\:ly invention has for its object to pro- V i'de"'an improved comb case and cleaning "'d'evice, and to the above ends the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing the improved device in side elevation, with some parts broken away; Fig. 2 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1

The numeral 1 indicates the comb case which, as shown, is preferably bent from a single sheet of spring metal to form the top, back; bottom and cover 2 thereof, the ends of the case 1 being left open. At its free edge, the

top of thecaselisbentlaterally downward to form 'aflock flange 3 which extends the full length of the case 1. The cover 2 is formed integral with the bottom of the case 1 and tends to yieldingly stand in an open posi- 40 tion, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 4. The free upper edge of the cover :2, when the cover is closed, projects slightly above 1 the lower edge of the stop flange 3, and by pressing the cover 2 and the back of the case 1 toward each other, the upper edge of the cover 2 may be sprung back of the stop flange 3, thus serving as a frictional lock to hold the cover 2 in its closed position. To open the cover 2, it is only necessary to pull on the case 1 and cover 2 in op- ,.positedirections. To make the cover Qmore flexible, the same is pressed outward near its top edge to form a comparatively wide and horizontally extended rib 4 which extends the full length of the cover 2. This rib -L also affords convenient means by WlllCh the case may be more easily held when the comb is being used. Just below the rib t and extending parallel therewith, the cover 2 is pressed inward to form a comparativel narrow friction rib 5, the purpose of which will presently appear.

Mounted within'the case 1 is an ordinary comb 6 with the exception that,its back is extended beyond the teeth thereof, at both ends, to form a pairoffinger-pieces 7. The fingerpieces 7, when the comb 6 is mounted within the case 1, extend through and beyond the open ends of the case 1 and are cut on their under surfaces to form finger-nail files 8. For cooperation with these finger-pieces 7, the bottom and adjacent back portion of the case 1 and cover 2 are extended beyond the open ends of the'case 1 to afford a pair of approximately U-shaped finger-pieces. 9, the upper edges of which are inwardly and upwardly beveled to form sharp edges which may be used for the purpose of cleaning the linger-nails.

Along the bottom of the case 1 is cut a multiplicity of alined holes or openings 10 through which the teeth of the comb 6 work. These openings 10 closely fit around the teeth of the comb 3 and the edges thereof act as scrapers on the teeth of the comb 6.-

By reference to Fig. 1, it will be noted that the width of the case 1 is such that the teeth of the comb 6 cannot be entirely Withdrawn through the openings 10 when the cover 2 is in its closed position, thereby preventing cndwise removal of the comb (i from the case 1, and they also insure the teeth being in their proper position when it is desired to move the comb into an operative position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4:. In Fig. 1 of the drawings, the teeth of the comb 6 are shown as projecting slightly through the bottom of the case 1, but in actual practice, the points of the teeth will be flush therewith. The comb 6 is held in position, when entirely within the case, by means of the friction rib 5 on the cover 2 which yieldingly bears against the side of the comb 6, as best shown in Fig. 3. Vhen the comb 6 is in position for use, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the friction rib 5 extends along and above the back of the comb and yieldin ly holds the comb 6 with its teeth extende in position for use.

The above described device, while extremely simple and of small cost is efficient for the purpose had in view. As is evident,

the comb 6 may be very easily and quickly removed from the case 1 for the purpose of cleansing the comb 6 and case 1. It is also evident that, after the comb 6 has been-used and'as the same is being returned within the case 1, bymeans of the finger-pieces 7 and 9, the teethof the comb 6 are thoroughlyscraped by the adjacent-edges of the openings 10 in the case 1', thereby removing any dirt Which may have accumulated thereon.

What I claim is:

1. The. combination with a comb, the ends of which terminat in finger pieces, of an open end case surronnding said comb and through the open ends of which the finger pieces of said comb project, said casing beingprovided withaseries of openings in which the teeth of said comb are. seated,-and finger pieces projecting from the ends of said case for cooperation With the finger pieces of said comb, substantially as described.

The combination with a comb, of a ,case' 'forsaid comb having detachably engageable edges for permitting said case to be sprung open for the insertion or removal of the comb, said case being provided with a series of openings in Whichthe teeth of said comb are seated for endwise movement into and out of said case, and means for yieldingly' holding, said comb ineither of its two extreme positions, substantially as described.

3. The combination with acomb, the ends open for the insertion or removal of the comb, said case being providedvvith a series of openings in which the teeth of the comb are seated for" endwise movement into and out of said case, a friction rib pressed from said case for yieldingly holding said comb in either of its two extreme positions, and finger pieces projecting from the ends of said case for cooperation with the finger pieces of said comb, substantially as de scribed.
