Description

Oct. 5 1926.
H.'A. SOOTIN SELF CLEANING coma Filed Nov. 50 1925 Patented Oct. 5, 1926.
UNITED STATES 0 1,002,050 PATENT OFFICE.
I-IYMEN A. SOO'IIN, OF LIBERTY, NEW YORK.
SELF-CLEANING COMB.
Application filed November 30. 1925. Serial No. 72.267.
This invention relates to combs, and has more particular reference to a cleaning means therefor, which cleaning means serves as a handle for the comb and also as a housing therefor when not in use.
One of the principal objects of the invention is the provision of an improved comb having means for housing the comb when not in use and for cleaning the comb teeth, and also having means for protecting the comb teeth against damage when the comb is in closed position.
A further and important object is to provide means wherein the comb may be held in an open position with respect to the cleaning device and housing when it is desired to use the same.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in View as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure l is a side elevation of my improved comb, the comb per se disclosed as being in open position with respect to the combined housing and cleaning construction.
Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectional View taken substantially upon the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a lower edge elevation of the housing and cleaning device, and
Fig. at is a fragmentary perspective of one corner of said combined housing and cleaning device.
Now having particular reference to the drawing, 5 designates the comb per se,whioh is of conventional pocket type construction and 6 the'housing and cleaning device of said comb.':
The combined housing and cleanin device is formcd from a single sheet of suitable metal or any other suitable material that is bent over upon itself to provide spaced walls 7 and 8, between which the comb proper designated 5 is adapted to be positioned. At the lower edge of one of the walls, as shown in the drawing, the wall designated 7 there is formed inwardly extending lines or fingers 9 in spaced relation and of a number equivalent to the number of teeth in the comb 5 and in staggered relation with respect to said teeth in order that the same may engage 4 between the teeth clearly shown in Figs.
1 and 2. whereby when the comb is moved upwardly within the housing, any matter Ctllitt'l'illg between said teeth will be eiliclcntly forced downwardly from therebetween and consequently properly clean the comb. At the opposite ends o'f'the combined housing and the cleaning device the spaced walls thereof are formed with registering arcuate shaped slots 1.0 loosely extending through which are cross pins 11 that are headed as at 12 at their opposite ends, said pins adapted to be readily moved within said slots. The lower ends of the slots extend substantially parallel with the upper and lower edges of the comb case in order that when the comb 5 is positioned with respect to the case as shown in Fig. 1, said cross pins will rest upon the uppcr edge thereof and prevent acci'lental movement of the comb upwardly within the case while the same is being used, it being understood, of course, that the case or housing serves as a handle for the comb.
When it is desired to dispose the comb within the housing or case, the pins are manually slid 'upwardly within the slots after which the comb may be positioned substantially entirely within the case-in order that it may be conveniently arranged-within the pocket of the user.
From the foregoing description, when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, it will at once be apparent that I have provided a highly novel and simple, and useful form of comb that is well adapted for anticipating all of the objects and purposes hereinbefore set forth.
Minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the ap pended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described comprising a case formed from a single blank of sheet metal material and bent over upon itself to provide spaced Walls, a pocket comb adapted to be disposed between said walls of the case, said spaced walls being provided with registering arcuate shaped slots at the opposite ends of the case, the lower ends of the slots being disposed substantially parallel to the horizontal edges of the case, and
transversely extending pins loosely operable in each pair of registering arcuate shaped slots, said pins being adapted to engage the upper edge or back of the comb when disposed in the lowermost ends of the arcuate shaped slots'for holding the casing in its raised position whereby the case forms a handle for the comb, said case being adapted to be moved downwardly to conceal the comb when the transversely extending pins are manually moved upwardly in the respective slots.
2, A device of the class described comprising a case formed from a single blank of sheet metal material which is folded back upon itself to provide spaced walls, a plurality of teeth formed on the lower edge of one of the walls and being disposed laterally between the teeth of the comb in order that the same will be cleaned when the case is moved downwardly over the comb, the
spaced Walls of the case having registering arcuate shaped slots formed at the opposite end portions thereof; the lower portions of said slots being disposed substantially parallel with the horizontal edges of the case, and a transversely extending pin loosely arranged within each pair of arcuate shaped slots, said pins being adapted to rest on the upper edge or back of the comb when disposed in the lowermost ends of the arcuate shaped slots for preventing the downward sliding movement of the case over the comb, said comb being adapted to' be disposed within the case when said pins are manually moved upwardly in the slots.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
