The present invention relates to improvements in special receptacles and has'reference more particularly to individual sanitary tooth brush holders.

One of the important objects of the present invention is toprovide a. tooth brush holder in which the bristles of a tooth brush are protected in a sanitary condition when not in usie from foreign matter such as dust and the li e.

One ofthe important objects of the present invention is to provide an individual sanitary tooth brush holder that includes a casing open at its respective ends and within which is arranged a brush head receiving unit, cooperating means being provided between the sides ofthe casing and thefrespective sides of said unit wherebythe unit is caused to slide into and out of the casing by the action of the head of the brush, the ends of the movable 'unit constituting closures for the open ends of the casing whereby to conceal the bristles of the brush within the casing when thebrush is not in use. r

' Another important object of the invention is to provide a santitary tooth brushflholder that will at all times be positive and efficient in its operation, the same being simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted for the purposes for which it is designed.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the followof the brush head of a toothbrush within the holder.

In the drawings wherein for the purposeof illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a substantially rectangularshaped cas ing that is open at its upper and lower ends, the same being formed from any suitable material such as celluloid, aluminum or the like. The free ends of the sheet material are folded over in overlapping relation and are secured together-in any suitable manner. Formed in the sides of the casing 1 adjacent the upper edges thereof are the registering openings 2, the purpose of which willbe presently described. Arranged for slidable movement within the casing 1 is the substantially rectangular shaped brush housing or unit denoted'generally by the numeral 3 in Figure 6. This housing or unit is also formed from the same material as the casing 1 and. in Figure 7 of the drawings, there is illustrated the blank from which this jhousingor unit is formed; The blank is designated by the reference character 4; andthe dottedlines 5 indicate where theblank is folded to shape the same into the rectangular housing. The side walls of this housing are indicated by the reference character tl'while the top and bottom end asters. 7 and 8 respectively.

The narrow side -walls of the housing-3 are-open and uponreferring to Figure (Sit will be observed that the sides 6 are cutaway a D u adjacent the top of the housing and Dortionsare denoted by the reference charat 9 from the lower right hand corner to Y also to one side of the central portion of the housing. The upper portions of the sides 6 are cut away at the right hand side of the housing as at 10 and the cut away portions extend from the upper right hand corner inwardly and merge with the upper edge of the cut away portions 9. It will be noted that the cut away portions 10 are slightly curved Whereas the cut away portions 9 are straight. The purpose of this construction will be presently described in detail; r

The sides 6 of the rectangular shaped housing or unit 3 are formed with longitudinally extending registering curved slots 11 that are arranged adjacent the meeting points of the cut away portions 9 and 10 and operable within these slots 11 are suitable headed fastening elements 12 that extend through the openings 2 formed in the casing 1 and which openings 2 have communication with the respective curved slots 11. In Figure 4 of the drawings, there is clearly shown the manner in which 'the headed fasteners 12 are associated with the movable housing or unit 3 and the easing 1. I

The lower right hand corner portion of the housing 3 is cut out as at 13 to accommodate the handle of the tooth brush. The casing 1 is of a length slightly greater than that of the housing 3 and this is clearly indicated in Fig ures 1 and 2 of the drawings.

When theparts are arranged as shown in Figure '1, it will be observed that the movable unit or housing 3 is entirely confined within the casing 1 and theupper and lower ends 7 and 8 ofthe movable unit 3 provide closures for the open upper and lower endsof the casing 1. By pushing upwardly on the bot- 7 tom 8 of the movable unit 3, the'same is caused to move upwardly and out of the easing into the position shown in Figure 3 so that the upper. portion of the movable unit 3 is disposed outwardly of the upper open end of the casing 1 and the out out portion 9 will be disposed directly adjacent one of the narrow sides of the casing and the pins or fastening elements will be disposed in the lower ends of the toothbrush is then grasped and a fur-. ther downward pull is exerted on the brush so that the head of the brush will be entirely within the casing and when the lowermost bristles strike the bottom walls 8, a further downward pull onthe handle of the tooth brush will cause the movable unit 3 to move downwardly into the casing to the position shown in Figure 2 so that the bristles of the brush will be entirely concealed within the casing and the friction between the adjacent sides of the casing and the movable unit 3 will tend to hold the latter in a closed position with the ends of the movable unit or housing 3 providing suitable closures for the open upper and lower ends of the casing. In this manner, the bristles of the brush will be protected against dust and other foreign matter when not in use.

When it is desired to use the brush, the handle of the brush is pushed upwardly causing the upper end of the brush head to strike the top wall 7 of the movable unit or housing 3 and said movable housing will move upwardly out of the casing to the position shown in Figure 3 by reason of the cooperating slots 11 and the fastening elements 12 and when the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 3, the tooth brush may then be readily and easily removed from the holder for use. I In Figure 8 of the drawings, I have shown a modification of the sanitary toothbrush holder wherein the parts are arranged upside-downthat is to say the movable unit 3 is adapted to move out of the lower end portion of the casing instead of out of the upper end portion as inithe previous description. In this modification, instead of the cut out portion 13 being disposed adjacent the cut away portions 9, said out out portion is formed in the lower right hand corner of the movable unit as indicated at 14. Otherwise the parts are constructed in identically the same manner and the operation of this form of holder is thought to be readily obvious from theconstruction disclosed and therefor a detailed description of the same is believed unnecessary.

Byconstructing the casing 1 so that the same is of slightly greater length than the movable housing 3, provision is made for any bulge inthe top or bottom of the housing or unit 3 that mayresult from' usage with aview that the bulge willnot cause unnecessary exposure or mar the'appearance of the folder. a

The provision of'an individual sanitary tooth brush holder of the above-mentioned character will protect the bristles of a tooth brush when not in. use and due to its siniplicity, the holder can be readily and easily actuated for opening or closing the same by the action of the brush itself. An individual sanitary tooth brush holder of this character can be constructed and sold at a very low cost and the same will at all times be positive and efiicient in carrying out the purposes for which it is designed.

While I have shownthe preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. In a tooth brush holder, a casing open at its respective ends, a housing for the brush head of a tooth brush 'slidably arranged withinthe casing, said housing being moved outwardly of the casing by the brush when the latter is moved in one direction, the housing being moved into the casing to conceal the brush head when the brush is moved in the opposite direction.

2. In a tooth brush holder, a casing open at its respective ends, a housing for the brush head of a tooth brush slidably arranged within the casing, said housing being moved outwardly of the casing by the brush when the latter is moved in one direction, the housing being moved into thecasing to conceal the brush head when the brush is moved in the opposite direction, and coacting means between the casing and the movable housing for limiting the sliding movement of said housing. V

8. In a tooth brush holder, a casing open at its respective ends, a housing for the brush head of a tooth brush slidably arranged within the casing, said housing being moved out wardly of the casing bythe brush when the latter is moved in one direction, the housing being moved into the casing to conceal the brush head when the brush is moved in the opposite direction, said housing including side walls and top and bottom walls, said top and bottom walls providingclosures for t the respective upper and lower open ends of i the casing when the housing is entirely with in the casing.
