To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODORE SULIKX, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Duquesne, in'the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to broom holders, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a novel device that will hold the handle of a broom, mop, floor brush or simi lar article, whereby the article will be suspended and retained in a vertical position.

Another object of the invention is to provide a gripping device that will frictionally engage the handle of an article and hold the same in a suspended position.

A further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a device constituting a household article, the device being simple in construction, durable and highly eflicient for the purposes for which it is intended.

WVith these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter spe-' cifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed Without departing from the scope of the appended claim.

In the drawing :Figure 1 is a plan of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the same, Fig. 3 is an end View of the device, Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the handle of an article supported by said device, and Fig. 6 is a sectional viewof a portion of the device illustrating a modification of my invention.

In the accompanying drawing, the reference numeral 1 denotes a U-shaped bracket having the ends of the parallel walls 2 thereof bent outwardly to provide.lugs 3, these lugs being in a common plane and apertured, as at 41 whereby screws, nails or other fastening means can be employed for securing the bracket to a wall or similar support.

5 denotes a transverse pin connecting the walls 2 adjacent to the lugs 3, this pin serving a two-fold purpose. First, there is attached to said pin the end of a spring 6, which is coiled upon a pivot pin 8 movably mounted in the side walls 2, between the pin 5 and the lugs 3. This pin 8 is adapted to support the barrel 9 of a gripping member 10 arranged between the walls 2, and the opposite end of the spring 6 is adapted to extend over upon the upper side of the member 10, as at 11, whereby said member will be normally held in engagement with the pin 5. It is obvious, therefore that the sec ond function of the pin 5 is to limit the downward movement of the member 10 and the action of the spring 6. The member 10 has the outer end thereof reduced, as at 12, bent upwardly, as at 13 and shaped to provide a curved gripping surface 14 adapted to confront the inner curved surface of the bracket 1.

15 denotes a vertical arm. or lever carried by the member 10 adjacent to the pivoted end thereof, said arm or lever extending above the side walls 2 of the bracket 1, whereby it can be easily gripped to raise the member 10, when it is desired to raise the handle 16 of an article supported between said member and the curved inner wall of the bracket 1. Since the member 10 is pivoted whereby it will be retained at an inclination when gripping the handle 16 of the article, the weight of the article will be suflicient to normally bind the member against the handle 16 and hold the handle frictionally in engagement with the inner curved wall of the bracket 1, but should the weight of the article not be sufficient to accomplish this result, the inner curved wall of the bracket 1 can be serrated, roughened or corrugated, as at 17 to engage in the surface of the handle 16 and positively hold the same in conjunction with the member 10.

A holder which embodies all the elements heretofore mentioned has been designed whereby it can be attached to the wall of a building, either interior or exterior, as on a porch, for supporting the handle of a broom and maintaining the same in a vertical position, whereby the broom will not rest upon the floor or other support that might be injured by dirt contained in the broom, or that might injure the broom owing to the weight of the same being supported by the straw or bristles thereof.

The holder in its entirety is made of metal and is adapted to positively hold the handle of an article which is placed in the holder.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is

A broom holder comprising a U-shaped bracket having the free ends of its arms provided with laterally-extending apertured lugs adapted to be connected to a suitable support, a transversely-extending pin connected to said bracket near the inner end and in proximity to the lower edge thereof, a

pivot pin carried by said bracket inwardly of and in parallelism with said transverse pin, a gripping member having one end mounted upon said pivot pin and its other end extending in proximity to and cooperating with the inner face at the outer end of the bracket, and a spring carried by said pivot pin and fixed at one end to the transverse pin and tending to force the said member downwardly, said member having its downward movement arrested by said trans- \'erse pin.
