CHARLES L. nonswon'rn, oFsEATrLE, WASHINGTON.
BROOM HOLDER.
; Application filed May 2,
To all whom it may concern:
,Be it known that I, 'CHARLES L. DODS- woR'rII, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Vvashington, have inventeda certainnew and useful Improvement in Broom Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in holders -for'brooms,.mops and similar articles and an object of my invention is to provide a holder that be secured to a wall or other support in a convenient location and is adapted to frictionally grasp and securely holdany small cylindrical member, as a broom or mop handle that may be inserted therein, having an elongated handle grasping element or holding clip that is normally held in anextended position when it is not in operation so'that a handle may be easily inserted therein.
Anotherobject is to provide a holder having an. elongated or oval shaped handle receiving loop that will permit the suspended object to' swing, sidewisewithout straining, binding or damaging the holder.
A further object is to provide a holder that has a stop member below the element that grasps the broom or mop handle and against which said broom or mop handle may rest, said stop member serving to hold the lower end of the broom away from the wall, if the holder is mounted on a wall.
Other and more specific objects will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation on a reduced scale showing a holding device embodying my invention mounted on a wall and operatively supporting a broom;
Figure 2 is a plan View on a larger scale showing the device in an inoperative position;
Figure 3 is a view in front elevation of the device shown in Fig. 2; and
Figure 1 is a view in vertical mid section on broken line 4, 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals designate like parts, 5 indicates a plate provided near its four corners with perforations 6 through which screws or nails may be inserted for the purpose of securing the same to a wall or other support 7. The bottom edge of the plate 5 is bent outwardly as at 8, to form a 1923. Serial me nt.
saddle 9 on which the handle ldofa broom or similar article rest. I If" desired, the lower endof/the saddle 9 may be bent inwardly to form a leg 11 that; may rest against and be secured to the wall-'1'.
- The plate 5 isstamped or otherwise shaped to form bearing lugsnlil through which extendsthe rear wire 13 of a, handle holding clip. The wire 13 is bent forwardly'at right angles at both ends to form two parallel out.- wardly protruding portions 14: that are integral with or rigidly secured to an oval shaped loop 15. Thelongersides of the loop 15-have protective coverings or paddings-16,
preferably'formed of pieces of rubber tube,
that are arranged to come idcoritactlwith a handle 10 when the same isinserted thro'ugh the loop. 1 Y A stop member, to. prevent the handle receiving clip from swinging upwardly past a substantially horizontal position, is formed by stampinga piece 17 out orthe i seplate 5 at the proper location,bendingfthe same outwardly at right angles to the plate 5 and there bending the tip orend 18 of, suchpiece 17 at substantially right angles so that it will be in the path of movement of the handle receiving clip.
A torsion spring 19, operatively disposed on a supporting member 20 and having one end arranged to engage the base 5 and the other end hooked below the adjacent portion 14 of the handle receiving clip serves to urge said handle receiving clip into a substantially horizontal position. The device is installed by securing the same to a wall or other convenient support at the desired height. When the device is not in use the spring 19 will hold thehandle receiving clip in a substantially horizontal position as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. If a handle 10 is inserted upwardly through the loop 15 and then pressed against one of the padded portions 16 and drawn downwardly said handle will be gripped and held between the padded portions 16 on opposite sides of the loop 15 and when released will rest against the portion 9 and be suspended by reason of its own weight in the position shown in Fig. 1.
The saddle portion 9 prevents the lower end of the suspended articlefrom swinging inwardly against the wall as it will obviously have a tendency to do and thereby makes it possible to use my device on supports other than the wall where there is nothing for the lower end of the suspended article to strike against. The saddle 9 and the elongated loop 15 permit the suspended article teswing--- sidewise freely and without straining or damaging the holder in case a moving object as a person strikes or bumps against the bottom of such suspended article.
The weight of the suspended device keeps it firmly gripped within the holder and any force tending to pull the same downwardly will only cause the holder to grip more tightly. The'suspended broom may be released by lifting it up enough to loosen the grip of the holding clip which will there swing into a horizontalposition by means of the spring'19 whereupon the handle may be drawn downwardly out of the cup.
The device isstrong and simple in cons'truction, efficient in operation, not expensive to manufacture, easy to install and may be quickly and easily caused to engage with or release an object that is to be suspended. It is'designed especially for use as a holder for brooms, mops, shovels, and like article's having long cylindrical handles but may obviously be used for other purposes.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings clearly disclose the plan of construction and methodof operation of my invention, but, while I have shown and de scribed what I now consider to be a pre ferred embodiment of my device it will be understood that the disclosure is merely illustrative and that such changes may be resorted to as are within the scope of the following claims.
1. A holder of the class described embodying a base plate, a holding clip having one 'end pivotally connected with said base plate for swinging movement on a horizontal axis, stop means for preventing said holding clip from swinging above a substantially horizontal position, a springfor yiel'dingly urging said holding clip upwardly against said stop means and elongated handle receivlng loop formed'at the outer end of said holding clip.
'2. A holder of the class described embody ing a base plate arranged to be supported in a vertical plane, a holding clip having its inner end pivoted on said base plate for swinging'movement about a horizontal axis, a handle receiving loop formed in the outer end of said holding clip,-stop means for preventing said' holding-clip from swinging above 'a substantially horizontal position, a
spring for yielding'ly urging said" holding CHARLES L.-DODSWORTH
