Description

y 22, 1941- D. A. BUTLER STEEL wooL HOLDER Filed Feb. 20, 1940' A tiomeu i a tented July 22, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE STEEL WOOL HOLDER Delma A. Butler, Easton, Md.
Application February 20, 1940, Serial No. 319,943
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in holders particularly for steel wool and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character whereby a wad of steel wool may be handled for efiectively cleaning culinary utensils and the like. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a holder for steel wool whereby contact therewith by a persons hand is unnecessary.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a steel wool holder which is strong and durable, efficient in use and which may be manufactured at low cost.
Still other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and wherein- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a device embodying my invention, shown partly in vertical section.
Figure 2 is a side elevational View of the device. Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the reference numeral 5 designates generally a tubular metallic handle. One end portion of the tubular handle 5 is tapered and flattened as at 6 while its other end is closed; by a wall I which has an opening 8 therein.
The flattened end portion 6 of the tubular handle 5 has mounted therein a tapered partition. 9, which is held securely in position by a pin It], to provide a pair of openings I l-l A resilient bumper I2 is mounted on the fiattened end portion 6 of the tubular handle .5.
A length of wire rod is bent and twisted upon 7 itself and welded at [3 to form a rod H from which extends a pair of spring jaws l5--l5 having opposed angular prongs |6l6. .As shown in the drawing the rod I4 is slidably mounted in the tubular handle 5 with one end portion extending outwardly through the opening 8 in the wall 1 while the jaws I5-|5 extend through the openings |I-l I.
As can readily be seen, when the rod I4 is moved upwardly in the tubular handle 5 the jaws Iii-I5 are permitted to spread and release -a wad of steel wool I! held therebetween. The resilient bumper l2 prevents marring of utensils when cleaning the same.
Although I have shown and described herein a prepared embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in the materials and structure and arrangement of the several parts, within the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A steel wool scouring pad holder including a tubular handle having a flattened front end portion, a tapered partition in said flattened end portion to provide a pair of guide openings therein, a pin extending through opposite walls of said flattened end portion and through the tapered partition to secure the same in position, a wall across the back end of said tubular handle having a central opening therethrough, a rod slidably mounted in said tubular handle and extending therefrom through the opening in said wall at the back end thereof, spring jaws secured to said rod rearwardly of said tapered partition and extending through said guide openings, and opposed angular prongs on the ends of said spring jaws for holding a steel wool scouring pad therebetween.
